Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind The Secret Message

The office door shook once.

Then again.

Someone was standing outside.

Elena looked at Luca.

For the first time since she entered the Moretti Grand, she saw something she had not seen before.

Fear.

Not panic.

Not weakness.

Something deeper.

The fear of a man who had just realized the rules of his own world had changed.

"Who is that?" Elena whispered.

Luca didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on the door.

Because there were only a few people in the world who would dare stand outside his office and demand to be let in.

And most of them were dead.

The knock came again.

Three slow knocks.

Not rushed.

Not nervous.

A message.

Whoever was outside wanted Luca to know they were not afraid.

Luca stepped toward the door.

Elena grabbed his arm.

He looked down at her hand.

She immediately released him.

"I don't know who is outside," she said, "but walking toward someone who knows your secrets alone is usually a bad idea."

For a moment, Luca stared at her.

Then something unexpected happened.

He listened.

He stepped away from the door.

Anthony entered the office quickly.

"What happened?"

Luca showed him the message.

Anthony's face changed the moment he saw the name.

Elena noticed.

"You know who it is."

Anthony looked away.

"No."

The answer came too fast.

Elena narrowed her eyes.

"You are terrible at lying."

Anthony looked frustrated.

"Elena, this isn't a hotel problem anymore."

"You're right."

She looked at Luca.

"It's worse."

Nobody argued.

Because everyone knew it.

The suspicious charges.

The hidden symbol.

The photograph.

The unknown person outside.

They were connected.

Luca picked up his phone again.

The message remained on the screen.

A photograph of Elena entering the hotel.

Taken before she arrived.

Someone had been watching her.

Not Luca.

Not the family.

Her.

"Why would someone send me a picture of you?" Luca asked.

Elena folded her arms.

"Maybe because they want you to think I'm part of this."

"Are you?"

The question was direct.

Most people would have been offended.

Elena wasn't.

She looked at him calmly.

"If I was trying to destroy your company, would I walk into your lobby and point out the evidence?"

Luca didn't answer.

Because he knew the answer.

No.

A person hiding something would have ignored the ledger.

Elena had done the opposite.

She exposed it.

A loud sound came from the hallway.

The office door handle moved.

Luca immediately positioned himself between Elena and the entrance.

The gesture was automatic.

She noticed.

"You protect people you don't trust?"

His eyes stayed on the door.

"I protect people who are standing in danger."

Before Elena could respond, the handle stopped moving.

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Walking away.

Luca opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

But something had been left behind.

A small envelope.

No name.

No writing.

Just a black mark on the front.

The same symbol.

Elena looked at Luca.

"Open it."

He didn't move.

"Why?"

"Because whoever left it wants you to find it."

"And that's exactly why I shouldn't."

Elena nodded.

"Good."

Luca looked at her.

"Good?"

"Because now I know you aren't reckless."

She picked up the envelope.

Luca immediately stopped her.

"Don't touch it."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

"Because you don't know what is inside."

Elena looked at the envelope.

Then at him.

"Neither do you."

That ended the argument.

Luca took a pair of gloves from the office drawer.

He opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

An old photograph.

A woman standing beside the Moretti family years ago.

Elena looked closer.

She didn't recognize anyone except Dominic.

But Luca froze.

His fingers tightened around the picture.

"Who is she?" Elena asked.

Luca didn't answer.

Anthony looked over his shoulder.

Then stepped back.

"No."

Elena looked between them.

"Who is she?"

Luca finally spoke.

"My mother."

The room became silent.

Elena stared at him.

"Your mother died."

"Yes."

"Then why is there a recent photo of her?"

Luca looked at the back of the picture.

There was writing.

A date.

A location.

And one sentence.

"Your son never knew the truth."

Elena felt a chill.

Because this was no longer about fake invoices.

Someone was trying to break Luca's understanding of his own family.

Luca turned the photograph over again.

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

"Where did you get this?" Elena asked.

Luca ignored the question.

Instead, he looked at Dominic's name written on the original financial approval documents.

Then at the photograph.

Then at the symbol.

Three pieces.

One hidden connection.

"The person behind this knows my family."

Elena looked at him.

"More than that."

Luca looked at her.

"What?"

She pointed at the picture.

"The person who sent this didn't want you to know your mother was alive."

The words stayed in the air.

Anthony stepped back.

"Don't say that."

Elena looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because it's impossible."

She looked at Luca.

"Is it?"

Luca didn't answer.

Because deep down, he had already considered the possibility.

His mother had died when he was young.

The official records were clear.

The funeral happened.

The grave existed.

Everything was documented.

But now someone had placed a photograph in his hands.

A photograph that should not exist.

The office phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Nobody moved.

Luca slowly picked it up.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice answered.

Quiet.

Broken.

Older.

"Luca?"

His face changed.

Elena watched every emotion disappear.

Because the voice had reached somewhere no one else could.

"Who is this?"

A pause.

Then the woman spoke.

"I know who is stealing from you."

Luca tightened his grip on the phone.

"Tell me your name."

Another pause.

Then:

"You used to call me Mom."

The phone slipped slightly in his hand.

Anthony covered his mouth.

Elena looked at Luca.

And for the first time, the man everyone feared looked completely lost.

The call ended.

A second later, Luca's phone received a new message.

One location.

One time.

One instruction.

"Come alone."

Elena saw the address.

Her face changed.

Because she recognized it.

It was the abandoned Moretti family property.

The house that had been empty for fifteen years.

The house where Luca's mother supposedly died.

Luca grabbed his jacket.

"I'm going."

Elena stood.

"No."

He stopped.

"You said come alone."

"I know."

"Then why are you following me?"

Elena looked at the photograph in his hand.

"Because whoever is behind this already knows how to control you."

Luca stared at her.

"And you think you can stop them?"

"No."

She picked up the blue ledger.

"But I think I can notice what you miss."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Luca walked toward the exit.

Elena followed.

But before they reached the elevator, Luca's phone vibrated one more time.

A final message appeared.

A photograph attached.

Luca opened it.

And his entire expression changed.

Because the picture showed Elena standing inside the Moretti Grand.

But the timestamp was from ten years earlier...

And written below the photo was a single sentence:

"Ask Elena Russo why she doesn't remember being here before."
