Chapter 2 - The Name Hidden Beneath The Ledger

Luca Moretti stared at the handwritten name beneath the final page of the blue ledger.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The room that had been filled with wealthy guests and quiet conversations only minutes earlier now felt like a courtroom.
A courtroom where Luca was the only person who did not know the truth.
Elena watched his face carefully.
She had spent years reading people during difficult business negotiations.
A nervous employee looked away.
A dishonest manager talked too much.
A guilty person tried to control the conversation.
But Luca Moretti did none of those things.
He simply stood there.
Still.
Silent.
And that scared Elena more than anger would have.
"What is it?" she asked.
Luca closed the ledger halfway.
"Nothing."
Elena almost smiled.
"That was the least convincing answer I've heard tonight."
Anthony looked between them.
"Elena, maybe you should stop."
She turned toward him.
"Why?"
Anthony lowered his voice.
"Because you don't understand who you're dealing with."
Elena looked at Luca.
Then back at her brother.
"That's exactly the problem."
She pointed toward the ledger.
"Everyone here seems to understand everything except me."
Dominic Moretti stepped closer.
His expression remained controlled.
"Miss Russo, curiosity can become dangerous when you step into situations beyond your experience."
Elena looked at him.
"And hiding $48,000 charges inside a hotel operation isn't dangerous?"
Dominic's jaw tightened.
Only slightly.
But Luca noticed.
He noticed everything.
For years, Luca had built his reputation on observation.
People thought power came from money.
From influence.
From fear.
But Luca knew power came from knowing what everyone else tried to hide.
And tonight, Elena Russo had walked into his world and found something he had missed.
That bothered him.
Not because she was right.
Because she was right too quickly.
Luca opened the ledger again.
"Tell me exactly what you saw."
Elena looked surprised.
She expected resistance.
Not cooperation.
She walked closer.
"The first charge says the Grand North Ballroom was reset at 8:15 p.m."
"Correct."
"But the gala ended after 11."
Luca nodded.
"Yes."
"Then explain how your staff cleaned, removed decorations, replaced linens, and prepared the room while four hundred guests were still inside."
Nobody answered.
Elena continued.
"They charged you for labor hours that could not physically exist."
Luca turned the page.
Another entry.
Same handwriting.
Same approval signature.
His expression became darker.
"The second charge."
Elena nodded.
"Same issue."
"And the third?"
"Same."
Luca looked at Dominic.
"Who approved these?"
Dominic didn't hesitate.
"The accounting department."
"Name."
The older man paused.
A small pause.
Almost invisible.
But Luca saw it.
"Marcus Vale."
Elena looked up.
"Your financial director?"
"Yes."
"How long has he worked for you?"
"Nine years."
Elena crossed her arms.
"Then either he is incompetent..."
She looked at the ledger.
"Or someone wants him to look incompetent."
The room became silent.
Luca studied her.
"You think someone inside my company is stealing from me?"
Elena shook her head.
"No."
That answer surprised him.
"What do you think?"
She looked at the pages.
"I think someone is testing how much money they can take before you notice."
For the first time, Luca had no immediate response.
Because that possibility was worse.
A thief wanted money.
A person testing boundaries wanted control.
Dominic stepped forward.
"This is speculation."
Elena looked at him.
"Maybe."
She closed the ledger.
"But you became uncomfortable before I finished explaining."
Dominic's expression hardened.
"I am uncomfortable because you walked into a family meeting and accused people you barely know."
"No."
Elena placed the ledger on the table.
"I walked into a family meeting where people lied about why I was invited."
Anthony looked away.
The truth hurt because everyone knew it.
Luca looked at Elena.
"You were brought here without knowing about the marriage arrangement."
She didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Her silence confirmed everything.
Something changed in Luca's eyes.
Not pity.
Respect.
Because he understood something.
Elena Russo had every reason to leave.
Instead, she stayed because she wanted answers.
"Why didn't you leave?" Luca asked.
Elena looked at him.
"Because someone is stealing from your company."
"That isn't your problem."
She nodded.
"You're right."
Then she looked directly at him.
"But it became my problem when your family used my reputation as part of their arrangement."
Anthony sighed.
"Elena..."
"No."
Her voice stayed calm.
"Everyone here expected me to be a bride."
She tapped the ledger.
"Nobody expected me to notice this."
Luca almost smiled.
Almost.
"You really aren't afraid of me."
Elena looked at his expensive suit.
His intimidating presence.
The reputation everyone whispered about.
Then she looked back at his eyes.
"I don't know you well enough to be afraid of you."
The answer caught him off guard.
Most people feared the name Moretti before they met the person.
Elena was different.
She judged what was in front of her.
Not what people told her to believe.
Luca picked up the ledger.
"Come with me."
Dominic immediately reacted.
"Luca."
"I said come with me."
The tone ended the argument.
Elena followed him through the private hallway behind the ballroom.
The hotel changed completely away from the guests.
The luxury disappeared.
The polished image disappeared.
Here were the places where the real business happened.
Offices.
Security rooms.
Financial departments.
The hidden side of the Moretti empire.
Luca stopped outside a glass office.
"Marcus Vale works here."
Elena looked inside.
The office was empty.
But something bothered her.
"What time does he usually leave?"
"Midnight."
She checked her phone.
"Then why is his computer still on?"
Luca looked through the glass.
The monitor inside showed a financial report.
A report that should have been closed.
He unlocked the door.
Inside, everything appeared normal.
Too normal.
Elena walked toward the desk.
She noticed a coffee cup.
Still warm.
A chair pushed back.
A folder left open.
Someone had left quickly.
Luca opened the folder.
Inside were printed copies of hotel transactions.
Elena leaned closer.
Then she froze.
"Wait."
Luca looked at her.
She pointed to the bottom corner of the document.
A small handwritten symbol.
The same symbol she had seen beneath the ledger.
Luca's expression changed.
"Where did you see that?"
"In the ledger."
He grabbed the papers.
"No."
His voice became quieter.
"This isn't from accounting."
Elena looked at him.
"Then where is it from?"
Before Luca could answer, the lights in the office suddenly turned off.
The hallway outside went dark.
Anthony's voice came from the doorway.
"Luca?"
No response.
The emergency lights flickered on.
And then Luca's phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
His face changed instantly.
Elena saw the screen.
A photo.
A photo of her entering the Moretti Grand that night.
Taken from inside the hotel.
Below it was one sentence:
"She was not sent here by her family."
Luca looked toward the dark hallway.
Then another message appeared.
This time, with a name.
The name he thought had vanished forever.
Luca slowly turned toward the locked office door.
Someone knocked from the other side.
May you like
And a familiar voice whispered...
"Open the door, Luca. I know Elena is inside."
