Chapter 6 - The Truth Hidden In The Recording

The video began with static.
Then a young Elena appeared on the screen.
She was standing inside the Moretti estate.
She was younger.
Smaller.
But there was no mistake.
It was her.
Luca stared at the laptop screen.
He couldn't breathe.
Because the girl in the video was not a stranger.
It was Elena Russo.
Standing beside his father.
On the night his father died.
"That's impossible," Anthony whispered.
Nobody answered.
The video continued.
The camera angle was hidden.
Whoever recorded it had been watching from a distance.
Young Elena stood near the fireplace.
Her face was filled with fear.
Luca's father, Alessandro Moretti, stood in front of her.
He looked serious.
Not angry.
Concerned.
The audio was unclear at first.
Then the voices became louder.
"You cannot tell him."
Alessandro's voice.
Elena's younger voice answered.
"But he deserves to know."
Luca moved closer to the screen.
His heart started beating faster.
The young Elena continued:
"What if Luca finds out?"
Alessandro looked toward the door.
"He cannot know the truth yet."
The video froze for a second.
Then continued.
Elena looked at Alessandro.
"Because of Dominic?"
The room became silent.
Luca looked at his mother.
Isabella closed her eyes.
She already knew what was coming.
The recording continued.
Alessandro lowered his voice.
"Dominic will do anything to protect his position."
Young Elena looked terrified.
"Then why don't we tell Luca?"
"Because Luca will try to fight."
"And?"
Alessandro looked at her.
"And he will die trying."
Luca stepped away from the screen.
Those words hit harder than any betrayal.
His father had not died because of an accident.
He had been afraid.
Afraid someone would kill his son.
Elena stared at the video.
"I don't remember this."
Isabella looked at her.
"I know."
"Why?"
The older woman took a slow breath.
"Because that night changed everything."
Luca turned toward Elena.
"What happened after this?"
Nobody answered.
The silence was the answer.
Something terrible happened.
Something they had all agreed to hide.
The video continued.
The door opened.
A man entered.
The camera didn't show his face.
But Luca recognized the voice.
Dominic.
"You shouldn't have brought her here."
Young Elena stepped back.
Alessandro moved in front of her.
"She knows enough."
Dominic laughed quietly.
"That is exactly the problem."
The recording shook.
The person holding the camera moved.
Then Dominic said something that made Luca freeze.
"After tonight, nobody will remember this conversation."
The screen went black.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
For several seconds, the only sound was the old laptop fan.
Then Elena whispered:
"He erased my memory."
Isabella looked at her.
"Yes."
Luca looked toward his mother.
"How?"
Isabella sat down slowly.
"Your father discovered Dominic had been using the family company to hide illegal financial operations."
Elena immediately looked at the blue ledger.
"The $48,000 charges."
Isabella nodded.
"It started years ago."
Luca's expression hardened.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because your father made me promise."
"Why?"
"Because after he died, Dominic controlled everything."
Luca laughed bitterly.
"You expect me to believe my uncle murdered my father?"
Isabella looked at him.
"I expect you to remember that your father trusted almost nobody."
The words hurt because they were true.
Alessandro Moretti had built his empire by trusting carefully.
If he feared Dominic, there was a reason.
Elena looked at the video.
"But why was I involved?"
Isabella looked at her.
"Because your father trusted your family."
"My family?"
"Your father was an accountant."
Elena frowned.
"My father worked with numbers."
"Not just numbers."
Isabella walked toward the old desk.
"He helped Alessandro discover where the money was going."
Elena felt a strange pressure in her chest.
Her father.
The man who never talked about the Morettis.
The man who always told her to stay away from powerful families.
He had been connected to all of this.
"What happened to him?"
Isabella looked down.
"He disappeared."
Elena went silent.
She had always believed her father left because he wanted a new life.
Nobody ever told her the truth.
Luca noticed her expression.
"Elena."
She shook her head.
"I'm fine."
But she wasn't.
She had spent her entire life believing she knew where she came from.
Now every memory had a question mark.
Luca walked toward her.
"You don't have to do this."
She looked at him.
"Do what?"
"Keep searching."
Elena gave a small, humorless smile.
"Someone erased years of my life."
She looked at the screen.
"I think I deserve to know what happened."
For the first time, Luca understood.
Elena wasn't chasing money.
She wasn't chasing revenge.
She was trying to find herself.
A sound came from outside.
A car.
Everyone froze.
Luca immediately turned toward the window.
The headlights disappeared.
Someone had arrived.
But nobody had heard the gate open.
Luca moved toward the entrance.
"Stay here."
Elena followed.
"No."
He looked at her.
"This time, listen."
She shook her head.
"No."
The answer was immediate.
"You've spent your entire life protecting people by pushing them away."
Luca stared.
"Don't."
"I'm not your weakness, Luca."
The words stopped him.
Because he realized she was right.
He opened the front door.
The driveway was empty.
But something was sitting on the steps.
A small black box.
The same type of box that held Elena's bracelet.
Luca picked it up.
Inside was a key.
And a note.
Elena took the note.
Only six words were written.
"The basement was never empty."
The entire house went silent.
Luca looked toward the hallway.
There was a basement door.
One he had never noticed before.
Hidden behind an old painting.
Elena walked toward it.
Her hand touched the handle.
A strange feeling passed through her.
Like she had done this before.
Like she had stood in front of this door years ago.
Luca saw her expression.
"You remember."
Elena whispered:
"I think I was here."
The lock was old.
But the key fit perfectly.
She slowly turned it.
The door opened.
Cold air rushed upward.
Then they heard something.
A sound from below.
Not footsteps.
Not movement.
A voice.
A woman's voice.
Whispering Elena's name.
Luca grabbed his weapon.
Elena held her breath.
Because the voice from the darkness was not a stranger.
It was someone she knew.
Someone she had forgotten.
May you like
And from the bottom of the basement stairs, the voice whispered:
"Elena... you finally came back for me."
