Chapter 1 - The Day My Father Tried To Take My Home

A pregnant woman sat on a cold porch, crying: "Someone please help me, my baby is coming!"

When attorney Samantha Reed arrived, she found a broken folder belonging to Nathan Moore's estate.

Inside was one hidden document with four words written across the top:

"Emergency Protection Activated."

Elena suddenly realized her husband had planned for this.

Three weeks after my husband died, I was sitting in my kitchen holding a cup of coffee I could no longer taste when my father walked through my front door and tried to take away the only home I had left.

My name was Elena Moore.

And that morning, I was eight months pregnant, grieving the man who had promised to grow old with me.

Nathan was gone.

The house was the last piece of him that remained.

Every corner carried a memory.

The small scratch on the dining table where we had built our first furniture together.

The hallway where he used to spin me around after long workdays.

The kitchen where he had once stood behind me, placing his hands over my pregnant stomach and whispering that our child would grow up surrounded by love.

Now he was gone.

And I was alone.

Or at least, I thought I was.

Because that morning, my father Richard Vale walked into my house like he owned it.

He did not knock.

He did not ask if I was okay.

He simply unlocked the door with the spare key I had forgotten he still had.

Behind him stood Bianca, his young wife, wearing a designer dress and carrying a luxury handbag.

She looked around my kitchen with a smile that made my stomach tighten.

"Elena," my father said, placing a thick folder on the table. "We need to discuss what happens next."

I slowly stood up.

My pregnancy made every movement difficult, but I refused to let him see fear.

"What are you doing here?"

Richard opened the folder.

"Your husband's death created financial complications."

I stared at him.

"What complications?"

He pushed several papers toward me.

"Nathan had obligations. The house needs to be sold."

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

"The house?"

Richard nodded.

"You cannot afford this place alone."

I looked at Bianca.

She avoided my eyes.

That told me everything.

"You planned this before you even came here."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Don't make this emotional."

I almost laughed.

My husband had been dead for three weeks.

Everything was emotional.

"You walked into my home after burying my husband and told me you're taking it away."

Richard leaned forward.

"You need to be realistic."

I placed my hand over my stomach.

"This is my home."

"No," he said coldly. "It was Nathan's."

The words hurt more than he knew.

Because Nathan had spent years proving I belonged.

He had changed the deed.

He had added my name.

He had protected me.

But my father had never cared about that.

Richard reached into the folder and pulled out another document.

"I am handling the liquidation."

I looked directly at him.

"You are handling nothing."

Bianca finally spoke.

"Elena, don't make this harder than it has to be."

I turned toward her.

"You knew about this?"

She smiled slightly.

"We're trying to help you."

Help.

That word almost made me angry enough to forget my pain.

"You broke into my home to help me?"

Richard stepped closer.

"You need to leave."

I froze.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

He pointed toward the door.

"This house is going to be sold."

I stared at him.

"Get out of my house."

The room became silent.

Richard's face changed.

For the first time, he realized I was not going to surrender.

"You always were stubborn."

"And you always underestimated me."

He grabbed my arm.

I immediately pulled away.

"Let go."

"Don't make a scene."

"Let go of me!"

But he was stronger.

He pulled me toward the front entrance.

My heart raced.

Not because I was afraid for myself.

Because I was afraid for my baby.

"Richard, stop!"

He opened the door.

The morning air hit my face.

Then everything happened too quickly.

He pushed me onto the porch.

I fell hard.

Pain spread through my body.

Then I felt it.

Warmth.

My breathing stopped.

I looked down.

My hands started shaking.

"My water broke."

Richard looked at me.

For a second, even he looked surprised.

Bianca stepped closer.

"Richard..."

But he quickly recovered.

He threw my handbag beside me.

"Call whoever you want."

Those words would stay with me forever.

Because I did exactly that.

But I didn't call my father.

I didn't call Bianca.

I called the one person Nathan trusted most.

Samantha Reed.

His estate attorney.

The phone rang twice.

"Elena?"

My voice broke.

"Samantha... my father is inside my house."

Her tone immediately changed.

"What happened?"

"He forced me outside. I'm eight months pregnant. My water broke."

A pause.

Then Samantha's voice became serious.

"Do not go back inside."

"But my things..."

"Elena, listen to me."

I heard her typing.

"Did Richard show you documents?"

"Yes."

"What kind?"

"He said Nathan left debts and the house had to be sold."

Silence.

Then Samantha whispered:

"That is impossible."

"What?"

"Nathan created protections specifically for this situation."

I sat frozen on the porch.

"What protections?"

Before Samantha could answer, I saw Richard through the window.

He was inside my kitchen.

Opening Nathan's desk.

Searching.

My blood ran cold.

"Samantha..."

"Elena?"

"He is looking through Nathan's things."

Another pause.

Then Samantha said something that changed everything.

"Your father contacted me yesterday."

I felt my heart stop.

"What?"

"He claimed you authorized him to handle Nathan's estate."

"I never did that."

"I know."

Her voice lowered.

"Because your signature was copied."

I looked through the window.

Richard was no longer searching randomly.

He knew exactly what he wanted.

Samantha continued.

"If he forged your signature, he triggered the emergency clause Nathan created."

"What clause?"

"The one that activates when someone tries to steal your inheritance."

I couldn't speak.

Then Samantha said:

"Elena, I need you to look at your husband's desk."

"Why?"

"Because Nathan left something there for the day someone betrayed you."

I slowly pushed myself up.

The pain was overwhelming.

But something stronger was replacing it.

Determination.

I looked at Richard.

He was standing beside Nathan's desk.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

May you like

Because whoever was on the other end had just told him something he never expected.

And then Richard slowly turned toward the hallway where Nathan's hidden safe was located...
