Chapter 4 - The House Where The Truth Was Buried

The abandoned Moretti estate stood behind a locked iron gate.

Luca Moretti stared at the old mansion and whispered:

"My mother died here."

Elena looked at the broken security camera above the entrance.

Then she noticed the gate was already open.

Someone had been waiting for them.

The drive from the Moretti Grand had been silent.

Not peaceful.

Silent.

There was a difference.

Luca sat behind the wheel with both hands gripping it tightly.

For the first time since Elena met him, he looked like a man fighting against memories instead of enemies.

The city lights disappeared behind them.

The roads became darker.

And eventually, the massive Moretti estate appeared through the trees.

Elena had expected something abandoned.

Something forgotten.

But the house looked different.

The outside was old.

The windows were covered with dust.

The garden had grown wild.

Yet small details bothered her.

Fresh footprints near the entrance.

A recently replaced lock.

A security camera that was too new for a house nobody visited.

Someone had been here.

Recently.

Luca turned off the engine.

"Stay behind me."

Elena looked at him.

"That sounds like something people say right before making a bad decision."

His eyes moved toward her.

"This isn't a negotiation."

"Neither was the $48,000 theft."

For a second, Luca almost smiled.

Almost.

Then he looked back at the house.

"You always argue with dangerous people?"

Elena opened the car door.

"Only when they are being unreasonable."

Luca followed her.

The front door was closed.

But not locked.

That bothered him.

The Moretti estate had been empty for fifteen years.

Nobody should have been able to walk inside.

Luca reached for the handle.

Elena stopped him.

"Wait."

He looked at her.

She pointed down.

A thin line of dust had been disturbed near the doorway.

Someone had entered recently.

And they didn't want to hide it.

"They want us to know they were here," she said.

Luca's expression darkened.

"Why?"

"Because fear is part of the message."

He looked at her.

"You think this person is playing with me."

"No."

Elena looked toward the house.

"I think they are making you remember something."

Luca opened the door.

The smell inside was immediate.

Old wood.

Dust.

And something else.

Flowers.

Fresh flowers.

Elena noticed them near the staircase.

A vase filled with white lilies.

The same flowers from Luca's mother's funeral.

Luca stopped walking.

"You remember?"

Elena looked at him.

"Remember what?"

"My mother liked lilies."

He stared at the flowers.

"She always kept them in the house."

The silence that followed felt heavier.

Because whoever brought those flowers knew something personal.

Something only family should know.

They moved deeper inside.

The furniture remained covered.

The paintings remained on the walls.

Everything looked frozen in time.

Except one room.

The study.

The door was slightly open.

Luca pushed it.

Inside, the room looked untouched.

A large wooden desk.

Old books.

Family photographs.

And a locked drawer.

Elena walked around slowly.

She noticed something immediately.

"Someone searched this room."

Luca looked at her.

"What?"

"The books are out of order."

She touched the shelf.

"Someone moved them and tried to put them back."

Luca looked impressed despite himself.

"You notice everything."

"I have managed hotels for years."

She glanced at him.

"People leave clues everywhere."

Luca walked toward the desk.

On top of it sat an old photograph.

He picked it up.

His mother.

A younger version of Luca.

And Dominic.

But there was something strange.

A person had been cut out of the picture.

Only a hand remained.

A man's hand.

Holding his mother's shoulder.

Elena looked closer.

"Someone removed him."

Luca turned the photograph over.

A message was written behind it.

"Your uncle knows who he was."

The room became colder.

Luca placed the photo down.

"My uncle?"

Elena nodded.

"The person behind this wants you to distrust Dominic."

Luca looked at her.

"And you think I shouldn't?"

Elena didn't answer immediately.

Because she had noticed something else.

A small mark carved into the desk.

The same symbol from the ledger.

The same symbol from the envelope.

She touched it carefully.

"This started here."

Luca stepped closer.

"How do you know?"

"Because people don't create symbols randomly."

She looked around the room.

"They leave them where the truth began."

Luca opened the desk drawers.

Most were empty.

But the final drawer was different.

It was locked.

He searched the room.

Nothing.

Then Elena noticed the painting hanging above the desk.

She removed it from the wall.

Behind it was a small key.

Luca looked at her.

"You found that too quickly."

She shrugged.

"Your family hides things badly."

He almost laughed.

Almost.

The key opened the drawer.

Inside was a small black box.

No name.

No label.

Only one word written across the top.

"Elena."

Both of them froze.

Luca looked at her.

The box had her name.

Not his.

Not his mother's.

Hers.

Elena slowly reached toward it.

But Luca stopped her.

"Why would your name be here?"

She stared at the box.

"I don't know."

For the first time that night, Elena had no answer.

She had been confident about the money.

The documents.

The hidden transactions.

But this was different.

This was personal.

Luca opened the box.

Inside was a small silver bracelet.

Elena immediately stepped back.

She knew it.

But she didn't know how.

Her breathing changed.

Luca noticed.

"What is it?"

She looked at the bracelet.

"I've seen this before."

"Where?"

Elena shook her head.

"I don't remember."

Luca picked it up carefully.

Inside the bracelet was a tiny engraving.

Two letters.

E.R.

Elena Russo.

Her name.

The same name written on a box hidden inside a house she had never visited.

Luca looked at her.

"Elena."

She didn't answer.

Because a memory had appeared.

Not a clear memory.

Just a fragment.

A child's voice.

A woman's voice.

A promise.

"You have to forget this place."

She closed her eyes.

The image disappeared.

"Luca..."

He stepped closer.

"What?"

"I think I've been here before."

The words shocked even her.

Before Luca could respond, the lights inside the mansion suddenly turned on.

One room.

Then another.

Then another.

Someone had activated the entire house.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Slowly.

Luca immediately moved in front of Elena.

The footsteps above them stopped.

Then a woman's voice echoed through the hallway.

"Luca."

He froze.

Elena looked at him.

Because the voice sounded exactly like the woman from the phone.

His mother.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

The voice continued.

"You brought her back."

Luca's face changed.

"Who are you?"

A shadow appeared at the top of the staircase.

A woman stepped forward.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Elena stared.

Because she recognized the face.

Not from memory.

From somewhere else.

The woman looked directly at Elena and whispered:

"You finally came home."

And then Elena noticed the photograph in the woman's hand.

A photograph taken twenty years earlier.

May you like

A photograph showing Elena as a child...

Standing inside the Moretti estate.
