Chapter 5 - The Girl Who Was Erased From The Family

The woman stood at the top of the staircase.
She looked older than the photograph.
But Elena knew.
Some memories did not disappear.
They waited.
"Luca."
The woman's voice trembled.
Not with fear.
With pain.
Luca stared at her.
For years, he had imagined this moment.
He imagined anger.
Questions.
Maybe even relief.
But he never imagined standing inside his childhood home and seeing the woman who raised him standing alive in front of him.
His hand tightened.
"Mom?"
The word escaped before he could stop it.
The woman closed her eyes.
A tear fell down her face.
"I thought I would never hear you call me that again."
Elena stood frozen.
She watched Luca.
The man who controlled companies.
The man who made powerful people nervous.
The man who never showed weakness.
Now he looked like a son who had spent fifteen years waiting for someone who never came home.
"Why?" Luca whispered.
The woman slowly walked down the stairs.
"Because I was trying to protect you."
"Protect me?"
His voice became colder.
"You let me believe you were dead."
The woman stopped.
"I had no choice."
Luca laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
"Everyone always says that."
Elena looked between them.
She felt like she was watching a family collapse in real time.
But something bothered her.
The woman wasn't looking at Luca like someone who returned to claim power.
She looked at him like a mother seeing her child after years apart.
Then the woman looked at Elena.
And everything changed.
"You don't remember me."
Elena felt uncomfortable.
"Should I?"
The woman lowered her eyes.
"No."
A strange sadness appeared on her face.
"You were too young."
Luca immediately looked at Elena.
"What does that mean?"
The woman didn't answer.
Elena stepped forward.
"I need answers."
The woman nodded.
"You deserve them."
She walked toward the study.
Every step seemed heavy.
Like she had carried the truth for too long.
"My name is Isabella Moretti."
Luca followed her with his eyes.
"I know your name."
"But you don't know what happened."
She stopped beside the desk.
"Your father was not the only person hiding things from you."
The room became silent.
Luca's expression changed.
"My father?"
Isabella nodded.
"Your father knew about everything."
Elena looked at Luca.
He didn't react.
But she saw it.
A small crack in his expression.
His father had always been a complicated subject.
A powerful man.
A strict man.
A man who built the Moretti empire.
And a man whose death created the future Luca inherited.
"What did he know?" Luca asked.
Isabella looked at the blue ledger Elena carried.
"The money."
Then at the photograph.
"The symbol."
Then at Elena.
"Her."
Elena felt a chill.
"Me?"
Isabella nodded.
"Your family didn't bring you here because of a marriage arrangement."
Luca looked confused.
"Then why?"
Isabella reached into her coat.
She pulled out an old envelope.
She handed it to Elena.
"Because someone knew you would eventually return."
Elena looked at the envelope.
Her name was written on it.
The handwriting was the same as the note behind the photograph.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence.
"Do not trust the man who says he protected you."
Elena looked up.
"Who wrote this?"
Isabella looked at Luca.
The answer shocked everyone.
"Your father."
The room went silent.
Luca stepped back.
"No."
Isabella's expression softened.
"I know what you believe."
"My father died fifteen years ago."
"Yes."
"Then why would he write something for Elena?"
Isabella looked at him.
"Because Elena was there the night he died."
Elena felt her heartbeat change.
A memory flashed.
A large room.
A man's voice.
Someone crying.
A hand holding hers.
Then nothing.
She grabbed the edge of the desk.
Luca noticed.
"Elena?"
She closed her eyes.
"I saw something."
"What?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
Isabella moved closer.
"You are starting to remember."
Elena looked at her.
"What happened to me?"
Isabella hesitated.
That hesitation answered more than words.
Something terrible had happened.
Something everyone agreed to hide.
Luca turned toward his mother.
"Tell me everything."
Isabella looked at him.
"I can't."
His face hardened.
"Why?"
"Because the person who erased Elena's memory is still alive."
Nobody spoke.
The statement changed the entire room.
Elena stared at Isabella.
"Someone erased my memory?"
Isabella nodded.
"And that person knows you found the ledger."
Luca immediately understood.
The fake charges.
The messages.
The photograph.
The hidden documents.
Everything.
Someone was trying to control the moment they discovered the truth.
Elena looked at the bracelet on the desk.
"Why was this hidden here?"
Isabella answered quietly.
"Because your mother gave it to you."
Elena froze.
"My mother?"
"Yes."
The words felt impossible.
"My mother knew you?"
Isabella nodded.
"She was my closest friend."
Luca looked shocked.
"My family knew Elena's family?"
"More than that."
Isabella looked toward the window.
"Your father and Elena's father were partners."
Elena frowned.
"My father never mentioned the Morettis."
"Because he was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
Isabella didn't answer.
She walked toward the old bookshelf.
She removed three books.
Behind them was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a small recorder.
Old.
Dusty.
Waiting.
Luca stared.
"How long has that been there?"
"Fifteen years."
Isabella handed it to him.
"Your father recorded this before he died."
Luca looked at the device.
His hands were steady.
But Elena knew he was not.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a man's voice appeared.
Luca froze.
Because he recognized it.
His father.
"If you are hearing this, then I failed."
The room became silent.
The recording continued.
"Luca, I need you to listen carefully."
A pause.
"Do not trust Dominic."
Luca's eyes widened.
Elena looked at him.
The recording continued.
"The person who betrayed this family was someone standing beside us every day."
A sound appeared.
Like someone entering the room.
Then the recording became distorted.
The final words were barely audible.
"Protect Elena..."
The recorder stopped.
Luca stared at it.
His entire understanding of his family had just changed.
But before anyone could speak, Elena's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
No one spoke.
Then a voice whispered.
"You finally remembered."
Elena froze.
"Who is this?"
The voice continued.
"You should have stayed away from Luca Moretti."
Luca reached for the phone.
But Elena pulled it back.
The voice became colder.
"Because now he will learn what you did."
Elena's face changed.
"What I did?"
A pause.
Then:
"You were not a victim, Elena."
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Luca looked at her.
Not with suspicion.
With confusion.
Because the person on the phone had said something impossible.
Something that changed everything.
Elena looked down at her phone.
A new message appeared.
A video file.
Recorded fifteen years ago.
The title was:
"Elena Russo — The Night She Lied."
She pressed the screen.
The video began loading.

And then the first frame appeared...
Elena saw herself standing beside Luca's father the night he died.
