Chapter 9 - The Truth About That Christmas Night

The phone was still in Grace's hand.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The message remained on the screen.

Your real father is alive.

Alessandro stared at the words.

Then at Leo.

Then at Grace.

His mind refused to accept it.

A father.

Alive.

A secret brother.

A hidden past.

Every truth he discovered only opened another door.

"Grace."

His voice was low.

"Who sent this?"

She didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

And that scared him.

"Grace."

She looked at him.

Her eyes were filled with memories.

Painful ones.

"The man who sent it..."

She stopped.

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Who?"

Grace whispered:

"Adrian."

The name meant nothing to him.

But the fear behind it meant everything.

"Who is Adrian?"

Grace looked toward Leo's room.

Then back at him.

"Someone who should never have found us."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Why?"

Because he already knew the answer would hurt.

Grace swallowed.

"Because he was there when Leo was born."

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

Alessandro felt something break inside him.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Something worse.

Confusion.

"You mean he was there?"

Grace nodded.

"He helped me escape."

The words hit him.

Escape.

Not leave.

Escape.

"From who?"

Grace looked at him.

"From your family."

Six years earlier.

Grace remembered the hospital hallway.

The cold lights.

The sound of doctors rushing.

The fear that she would lose everything before she even held her child.

She had been alone.

Alessandro was supposed to come.

She had called him twelve times.

No answer.

Not because he didn't care.

Because Matteo had made sure he was unreachable.

The night before, Alessandro had been sent to handle a false emergency.

A trap.

A distraction.

And while he was fighting a war he didn't start...

Grace was fighting alone.

Then Adrian appeared.

She didn't know who he was.

Not at first.

He walked into the hospital room.

Said only one sentence.

"Your baby is in danger."

She thought he was another threat.

She thought he was there to hurt her.

Until he showed her the documents.

The ones proving someone inside the Bellandi family wanted Leo gone.

"You can't stay here."

Grace remembered asking:

"Why are you helping me?"

Adrian looked away.

And answered:

"Because I failed someone once."

She never understood what he meant.

Not until later.

Not until she discovered who he really was.

Present day.

Alessandro listened without interrupting.

That was unusual.

The old Alessandro would have demanded answers.

Forced the truth out.

But now he waited.

Because this was Grace.

And for years, he had made the mistake of thinking love meant protecting someone from pain.

He finally understood.

Sometimes love meant allowing someone to speak.

"Why didn't you tell me about him?"

Grace looked down.

"Because I didn't know if I could trust you."

The answer hurt.

But he accepted it.

"You trusted him."

She nodded.

"Because he saved Leo."

Alessandro closed his eyes.

That was the sentence he deserved.

A stranger saved his son.

While he didn't even know his son existed.

"I hate that."

Grace looked at him.

"What?"

"That someone else was there."

A pause.

"When you needed me."

His voice became quieter.

"I should have been there."

Grace looked away.

"You were fighting."

"No."

He shook his head.

"I was choosing."

The honesty surprised her.

He continued.

"I chose everything that made me powerful."

He looked toward Leo's room.

"And I lost everything that made me human."

For a moment, Grace said nothing.

Because this was the first time Alessandro wasn't defending himself.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Just regret.

Then Marco entered.

"Boss."

Alessandro looked up.

"What?"

Marco held a folder.

"We found Adrian."

Grace immediately stood.

"Where?"

Marco hesitated.

"At the old Bellandi estate."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Impossible."

"He was waiting for us."

Grace's face changed.

"Waiting?"

Marco nodded.

"He left something."

He placed a small envelope on the table.

Grace recognized it instantly.

Her breathing stopped.

"No."

Alessandro noticed.

"You know that envelope."

She didn't answer.

Because she did.

She had seen it before.

Six years ago.

The night everything changed.

Alessandro picked it up.

"What is it?"

Grace whispered:

"The letter Adrian left me."

He looked at her.

"You never opened it?"

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

Her eyes became wet.

"Because he told me if I opened it, I would know why Matteo wanted Leo."

Alessandro stared at the envelope.

The answer was inside.

The truth.

The final piece.

He opened it.

Inside was one page.

Only one sentence.

Alessandro Bellandi was not the first child your father had.

Everyone froze.

Alessandro read it again.

Then again.

His face changed.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The hidden brother.

The fake documents.

The family secrets.

His father.

His uncle.

All of it.

But there was one thing he didn't understand.

"If my father had another son..."

He looked at Grace.

"Why hide him?"

Nobody answered.

Then Marco's phone rang.

He listened.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Everyone looked at him.

Marco lowered the phone slowly.

"Boss..."

"What happened?"

Marco looked at Alessandro.

"Adrian isn't alone."

A pause.

"He brought someone with him."

Alessandro stood.

"Who?"

Marco's face turned pale.

"Someone from the hospital records."

Grace froze.

Because she knew.

Before anyone could speak, the front door opened.

Slowly.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Alessandro stared.

Because the face in front of him wasn't a stranger.

It was a face he had seen his entire life.

In old family photographs.

In his father's office.

In memories he never questioned.

The man looked at him.

And whispered:

"Alessandro..."

May you like

A pause.

"I am your father."
