Chapter 5 - The Secret Hidden in the Christmas Box

The photograph fell from Alessandro’s hand.

The man outside was not just an enemy.

He was a ghost from the past.

A ghost who should have never returned.

Victor Moretti.

The name alone had once caused entire organizations to disappear.

Years ago, Victor had been Alessandro’s greatest rival.

Not because he was stronger.

Because he was patient.

He waited.

He watched.

He collected secrets.

And Alessandro had destroyed him.

At least, he thought he had.

Now Victor stood outside a small apartment holding a picture of Grace and Leo.

Smiling.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Alessandro walked toward the broken window.

His eyes never left Victor.

"How are you alive?"

Victor laughed.

A cold, quiet laugh.

"The same way your wife survived without you."

The words hit harder than any weapon.

Alessandro's expression changed.

"Where is Grace?"

Victor tilted his head.

"You still think this is about her?"

Alessandro stepped forward.

Marco grabbed his arm.

"Boss."

But Alessandro didn't move back.

Because this wasn't a business meeting.

This wasn't a war between families.

This was about his wife.

His son.

His entire life.

"Tell me where she is."

Victor looked at the photograph in his hand.

"She came to me when she had nowhere else to go."

Alessandro froze.

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

Victor held up another photograph.

This one was older.

Grace.

Pregnant.

Standing beside Victor.

Alessandro's face changed instantly.

No.

It wasn't possible.

"She never trusted you," Alessandro said.

Victor smiled.

"You're right."

A pause.

"She trusted me more than she trusted you."

The silence was unbearable.

Behind him, Elena looked away.

Because she knew.

There were things Alessandro still didn't understand.

Victor continued.

"Your wife didn't leave because of that woman at the restaurant."

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

"Don't say her name."

"She left because she discovered the truth about you."

"What truth?"

Victor looked directly into his eyes.

"The truth about why your enemies knew about Leo before you did."

Alessandro stopped.

The words settled slowly.

Someone knew.

Someone had known about his son.

Someone had hidden it.

And someone had been protecting that secret.

"Who?"

Victor smiled.

"Now you want answers."

Alessandro's voice became dangerous.

"Who knew?"

Victor didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the apartment hallway.

Then back at Alessandro.

"Ask yourself something."

"What?"

"If Grace was really hiding Leo from you..."

A pause.

"Why did she keep a Christmas gift for you?"

Alessandro's expression changed.

The Christmas gift.

The one from the penthouse.

The one he found after she disappeared.

He remembered.

The watch.

The engraving.

But Victor was talking about something else.

Something hidden.

"What gift?"

Victor smiled.

And for the first time, Alessandro realized something.

Victor wasn't here to attack.

He was here to reveal.

Three days earlier.

Grace sat on the edge of the small apartment bed.

Leo was asleep beside her.

The city outside was quiet.

Different from the world she left behind.

No bodyguards.

No luxury.

No endless phone calls.

Just silence.

For the first time in years, she could breathe.

But breathing didn't mean she wasn't hurting.

She looked at the small box on the table.

The Christmas box.

The one she brought with her.

Inside was the watch she bought for Alessandro.

She never gave it to him.

Not because she didn't want to.

Because she was afraid.

Afraid that if she gave him that gift, she would forgive him too easily.

She opened the box.

Under the watch was a small envelope.

She had forgotten it was there.

Her fingers trembled as she opened it.

A letter.

Not from her.

From someone else.

The handwriting immediately made her heart stop.

Her father's.

She had not seen that handwriting in twelve years.

Grace read the first line.

Grace, if you are reading this, it means Alessandro finally knows about Leo.

She froze.

Her father's letter.

How?

Why?

She continued.

I wanted to tell him myself. But I learned something about the Bellandi family that changed everything.

Grace's breathing became uneven.

She looked toward Leo.

Still sleeping.

Still innocent.

The letter continued.

Your husband is not the only person protecting secrets. Someone inside his family has been watching you since before Leo was born.

Grace stopped.

She already knew someone was watching.

She just never knew who.

Another line.

Do not trust anyone who says they are protecting Alessandro.

Her hand covered her mouth.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The strange phone calls.

The warnings.

The anonymous messages.

The feeling that someone was always one step behind her.

Someone had not been protecting her.

Someone had been controlling her.

Back in the apartment, Alessandro stared at Victor.

"Where is the box?"

Victor smiled.

"You don't even know what you're looking for."

"I asked you a question."

"And I am giving you the answer."

Victor stepped closer.

"Grace didn't leave you because she stopped loving you."

Alessandro remained silent.

"She left because she found out someone wanted your son dead."

The room went completely still.

Elena gasped.

Marco looked at Alessandro.

Nobody spoke.

Because those words changed everything.

"Who?"

Victor looked at him.

"The same person who made sure you never knew Grace was pregnant."

Alessandro's eyes darkened.

"Give me a name."

Victor shook his head.

"Not yet."

Alessandro almost laughed.

"You think you can bargain with me?"

"No."

Victor looked toward the photograph of Leo.

"I think you need to understand what kind of man you have become."

The sentence cut deeper.

"You spent years protecting your empire."

Victor pointed toward the drawings on the refrigerator.

"But you never protected the one thing that mattered."

Alessandro looked away.

Because he knew.

He had no answer.

Then Victor reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small object.

A key.

Old.

Silver.

With a number engraved on it.

Alessandro recognized it.

His father's private storage system.

A place nobody knew existed.

Except his family.

Except someone close.

"Where did you get that?"

Victor smiled.

"Grace gave it to me."

Alessandro's eyes widened.

"Why?"

Victor looked at the key.

"Because she knew one day you would need to find the truth."

He placed it on the table.

Then walked toward the door.

Alessandro didn't stop him.

Because he was staring at the key.

The key to a secret his father had buried.

A secret Grace had discovered.

A secret connected to Leo.

Before Victor left, he stopped.

"Alessandro."

He turned.

"If you want your wife back..."

A pause.

"Stop looking for the woman who left you."

Alessandro looked up.

"Start looking for the reason she had to."

Victor walked away.

The apartment became silent again.

Minutes later, Alessandro stood before the locked storage facility beneath the old Bellandi estate.

The silver key fit perfectly.

The door opened slowly.

Inside was darkness.

Dust.

Old documents.

And one large box sitting in the center.

Alessandro stepped closer.

A name was written on the top.

Not his father's.

Not his.

It was Grace's.

He reached for the lid.

And before he opened it, his phone suddenly received a message from an unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

You were never supposed to find what is inside that box.
