Chapter 7 - The Promise He Failed to Keep

The front door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Alessandro stood between Grace and the entrance, his body automatically moving in front of them.
A habit.
A reflex.
The same instinct that had protected him from enemies for years.
But this time, he wasn't protecting an empire.
He was protecting his family.
Victor looked toward the door.
His face became serious.
"Everyone stay back."
Grace pulled Leo closer.
The little boy looked confused.
"Mom?"
She lowered herself beside him.
"It's okay."
But her voice betrayed her.
It wasn't okay.
The lights were still off.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
Then a shadow appeared in the doorway.
Alessandro's hand moved toward his weapon.
The person stepped inside.
And stopped.
Because it wasn't an enemy.
It was someone Alessandro knew.
Someone he trusted.
Marco.
But Marco wasn't alone.
Behind him stood several Bellandi guards.
Alessandro's expression changed.
"Why are you here?"
Marco looked uncomfortable.
"Boss..."
"Answer me."
Marco looked at Grace.
Then at Leo.
Then back at Alessandro.
"I was trying to reach you."
"Why?"
Before Marco could answer, another voice came from outside.
A familiar voice.
An older voice.
A voice that made Alessandro's blood run cold.
"Because he was never the one you should have trusted."
Everyone turned.
An elderly man entered.
Alessandro froze.
His face changed instantly.
"No."
Grace looked at him.
"Who is that?"
Alessandro couldn't answer.
Because the man standing in front of him was impossible.
His uncle.
The man who raised him after his father died.
The man who taught him how to survive.
The man he trusted more than anyone.
Matteo Bellandi.
Dead for five years.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
Matteo smiled.
"Hello, Alessandro."
The room became silent.
Alessandro stared.
"You died."
Matteo laughed softly.
"That's what I wanted everyone to believe."
Grace stepped back.
Her expression changed.
Because suddenly she understood.
The warning.
The secrets.
The person inside the family.
The person who knew about Leo.
Matteo looked toward her.
"Grace."
She held Leo tighter.
"You."
Matteo smiled.
"You always were smarter than everyone thought."
Alessandro stepped forward.
"You knew."
Matteo looked at him.
"Knew what?"
"My son."
The smile disappeared slightly.
Then returned.
"Yes."
Alessandro's eyes darkened.
"You knew about Leo."
"Before you did."
The words were a direct attack.
Alessandro moved forward.
But Victor stopped him.
"Not yet."
Alessandro looked at him.
"Move."
Victor shook his head.
"Listen."
Matteo walked further inside.
"You want to know why Grace never told you?"
Nobody answered.
So he continued.
"Because she discovered what your family was really doing."
Grace looked at him.
"What are you talking about?"
Matteo looked at her.
"You found the files."
Her face changed.
The files.
The ones hidden in the box.
The ones her father warned her about.
Alessandro noticed.
"You knew about those?"
Grace looked at him.
"I was trying to protect you."
The words hurt.
Because they sounded exactly like what everyone had been saying.
Protecting.
Protecting.
Protecting.
But nobody had trusted him enough to tell him the truth.
Matteo laughed.
"She thought she could save you."
Alessandro turned toward him.
"What did you do?"
Matteo looked calm.
"Everything necessary."
"Necessary?"
"You built an empire on violence."
Alessandro's face hardened.
"And you built one behind my back."
A pause.
Then Matteo smiled.
"Exactly."
The answer shocked everyone.
Because he wasn't denying it.
He was admitting it.
"I didn't want you weak, Alessandro."
"You threatened my wife."
"I tested you."
"You tried to take my son."
"I protected the family."
Alessandro's anger grew.
"No."
His voice became colder.
"You protected yourself."
For the first time, Matteo's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Because Alessandro saw it.
The truth.
His uncle wasn't a protector.
He was the person who had been pulling strings.
For years.
Grace stepped closer.
"You were the one sending those messages."
Matteo looked at her.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I needed Alessandro to finally see what mattered."
Grace stared.
"You destroyed our family to teach him a lesson?"
Matteo smiled.
"No."
He looked at Alessandro.
"I destroyed his illusion."
The words stayed in the room.
Because everyone knew.
Alessandro had lost something.
Not because enemies attacked him.
Because he failed to see what was right in front of him.
His family.
His wife.
His son.
Leo stepped closer to Grace.
"Dad?"
The word was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Alessandro looked at him.
A child who had spent six years without him.
A child who carried his eyes.
His face softened.
He slowly lowered himself.
"Leo."
The boy watched him carefully.
"Are you really my dad?"
Alessandro swallowed.
He could face enemies.
He could face death.
But this question destroyed him.
"Yes."
Leo looked at Grace.
Then back at Alessandro.
"Why didn't you come before?"
The question broke something inside him.
Because there was no answer that could fix six years.
"I didn't know you existed."
Leo looked confused.
"Why?"
Alessandro looked at Grace.
Then away.
"Because I wasn't paying attention."
A tear appeared in Grace's eyes.
Not because she forgave him.
Because she finally saw him admitting the truth.
No excuses.
No pride.
Just regret.
Matteo watched them.
Then slowly took out a small device.
Victor immediately reacted.
"Don't."
Matteo smiled.
"You still protect them."
Victor's face changed.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
Matteo pressed a button.
The screen on the wall turned on.
A video appeared.
A young Alessandro.
Years ago.
Standing beside his father.
And beside them...
Grace's father.
Alessandro stared.
"What is this?"
Matteo didn't answer.
The video started.
His father's voice filled the room.
"If you are watching this, then Matteo has already betrayed us."
Alessandro froze.
Grace looked shocked.
The video continued.
"Alessandro must know the truth about the Bellandi family."
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
A name.
A signature.
A deal made years ago.
And at the bottom...
Alessandro saw his own name.
His blood turned cold.
Because the signature was his.
But he had never signed it.
Matteo watched his reaction.
"You finally understand."
Alessandro stared at the screen.
"What did you do to me?"
Matteo smiled.
"Nothing."
A pause.
"You did it yourself."
Alessandro looked closer.
The document.
The date.
The agreement.
Everything connected.
Then another page appeared.
A birth record.
Leo's name.
And beneath it...
A second father's name.
Grace gasped.
Alessandro turned toward her.
"Grace?"
She looked terrified.
Because she had never seen this document before.
Matteo stepped closer.
"Before you ask who the real father is..."
He smiled.
"Ask Grace who she was protecting Leo from."
Alessandro looked at Grace.
Her face had gone pale.
Because the secret she feared most had finally appeared.
And then Leo whispered something from behind her.
A name.
A name Alessandro had never heard before.
"Mom..."
May you like
The little boy pointed at the screen.
"That's the man who came to see me before Christmas..."
