Chapter 8 - The Woman He Almost Lost Forever

The room became silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because one sentence had changed everything.

"That's the man who came to see me before Christmas..."

Alessandro looked at Leo.

Then at Grace.

Then at the screen.

His mind tried to connect everything.

A man visiting his son.

A hidden birth record.

A document with his name.

A secret Grace had spent years protecting.

But the one thing he couldn't understand was the fear on Grace's face.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Fear.

"Grace."

His voice was quiet.

Almost broken.

"Who came to see him?"

Grace didn't answer.

Leo looked between them.

The little boy didn't understand the storm happening around him.

He only knew adults were scared.

And when adults were scared, children felt it.

Grace immediately pulled Leo closer.

"It's okay."

But Alessandro noticed.

She wasn't looking at him.

She was looking at Matteo.

Like she knew the real danger was standing there.

"Matteo."

His uncle smiled.

"Yes?"

"Turn that screen off."

Matteo laughed.

"Still giving orders."

Alessandro stepped forward.

"You are standing in my house."

"No."

Matteo looked around.

"This stopped being your house a long time ago."

Victor's expression changed.

He understood something.

"Alessandro."

Alessandro didn't look away.

"What?"

"You need to listen."

"I've been listening."

"No."

Victor shook his head.

"You've been reacting."

A pause.

"You need to think."

Alessandro hated that Victor was right.

Because that was his weakness.

He had spent his entire life fighting.

Attacking.

Surviving.

But Grace never needed a warrior.

She needed a husband.

And Leo never needed a king.

He needed a father.

Matteo walked closer to the screen.

"The truth is simple."

He pointed at the document.

"You built your empire using a name that was never fully yours."

Alessandro stared.

"What does that mean?"

Matteo smiled.

"Your father made a deal."

"With who?"

"With Grace's father."

The room froze.

Grace looked shocked.

"My father?"

Matteo nodded.

"Your father knew the Bellandi family was destroying itself from the inside."

Alessandro looked at Grace.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Her eyes filled.

"Because I didn't know everything."

"Then what did you know?"

Grace swallowed.

"That someone was trying to use Leo."

"Who?"

She looked at Matteo.

And that answer was enough.

Alessandro turned.

"You."

Matteo didn't deny it.

"I needed control."

"You threatened my child."

"I protected your child."

Alessandro stepped forward.

"Don't say that."

His voice became colder.

"Don't ever pretend you protected him."

For the first time, Matteo looked angry.

Only for a second.

But Alessandro saw it.

The mask disappeared.

And underneath was the man who had been manipulating everyone.

"You always were too emotional."

Matteo said.

"That's why I had to make decisions for you."

Alessandro laughed.

A cold laugh.

"Decisions?"

He pointed toward Grace.

"You made my wife run."

He pointed toward Leo.

"You stole six years from my son."

Then he stepped closer.

"And you think you made decisions for me?"

Nobody spoke.

Because Alessandro wasn't the same man anymore.

Not the man who walked into the room.

Something had changed.

He wasn't fighting for power.

He was fighting for them.

Later that night, Grace sat in the guest room.

Leo was asleep beside her.

She watched him breathe.

Still safe.

For now.

The door opened quietly.

She didn't turn.

"I knew you would come."

Alessandro stood there.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Six years.

Too many words.

Too many moments missed.

Finally, he whispered:

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Grace closed her eyes.

Because that question hurt.

Not because she didn't have an answer.

Because she had too many.

"I tried."

Alessandro looked down.

"When?"

"Before we got married."

Silence.

"I found out I was pregnant three weeks before our wedding."

His expression changed.

"You knew?"

She nodded.

"I wanted to tell you."

"Then why didn't you?"

Grace looked at him.

"Because you came home that night covered in blood."

Alessandro remembered.

The attack.

The hospital.

The emergency meeting.

Everything except her.

"You told me you had something important to say."

"I did."

Her voice shook.

"But you received a call."

He looked away.

Another memory.

A moment he forgot.

A moment she never did.

"You left the next morning."

Alessandro whispered:

"I didn't know."

"I know."

Her eyes became wet.

"That's the worst part."

He looked at her.

"What?"

"I know you didn't know."

The words hurt more than anger.

Because anger meant there was still a fight.

This was sadness.

"I spent years being angry at you."

She looked toward Leo.

"But then I realized something."

"What?"

"You weren't choosing someone else."

A pause.

"You were choosing everything else."

Alessandro couldn't defend himself.

Because she was right.

The business.

The family.

The enemies.

The power.

Everything always came first.

Except her.

"I should have protected you."

Grace looked at him.

"No."

She shook her head.

"You should have trusted me."

That sentence destroyed him.

Because trust was the one thing he never gave her.

Not intentionally.

But he didn't.

He trusted her with his heart.

But not with his world.

And she needed both.

"I hate that he knows you better than I do."

Alessandro admitted.

Grace looked surprised.

"Who?"

"Leo."

A tear fell from her eye.

"He doesn't know you."

"No."

Alessandro looked at the sleeping child.

"But I want him to."

The silence between them softened.

For the first time in days.

Not healed.

Not fixed.

But softer.

Then Leo moved.

His eyes opened slightly.

"Dad?"

Alessandro froze.

The word.

One word.

Something he never thought he would hear.

He slowly walked closer.

"Yes?"

Leo looked at him.

"Are you staying?"

Alessandro's throat tightened.

Because this was the question he deserved.

Not from enemies.

Not from business partners.

From his son.

"I want to."

Leo looked at Grace.

Then back at him.

"Okay."

The boy closed his eyes again.

And Alessandro stood there.

Unable to move.

Because a child had given him something he never earned.

A chance.

The next morning, everything changed.

Marco arrived with new information.

"Boss."

Alessandro looked up.

"What happened?"

"We found the man who visited Leo."

Grace immediately stood.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

Her face had lost color.

Alessandro noticed.

"You know him."

She didn't answer.

"Grace."

Her hands shook.

"I thought he was gone."

Alessandro walked closer.

"Who is he?"

She looked at him.

And for the first time since they reunited...

She looked truly afraid.

"He was the reason I ran."

The room became silent.

Marco opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A man.

Young.

Dark hair.

Standing beside Grace years ago.

Alessandro picked it up.

His eyes narrowed.

Because he recognized him.

Not from business.

Not from war.

From somewhere much worse.

The man in the photograph was wearing a Bellandi family ring.

A ring only blood relatives could own.

Alessandro looked at Grace.

"Who is he?"

Grace whispered:

"Your brother."

Alessandro froze.

"I don't have a brother."

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

"That's what Matteo wanted you to believe."

Before Alessandro could respond, the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.

A phone rang in the darkness.

Not Alessandro's.

Not Marco's.

Leo's.

Everyone froze.

Because nobody knew Leo had a phone.

Grace slowly walked toward the sound.

The phone was hidden inside Leo's backpack.

She opened it.

One message appeared.

From an unknown number.

May you like

Only five words.

Your real father is alive.
