Chapter 9 - The Night Someone Came for Her

Security locked down Cole Meridian.
The login originated from the executive floor.
Theo found the terminal.
Isabelle’s old office.
Someone had left a USB authentication key plugged into her computer.
Adrian recognized it.
Their father’s.
“How did this get here?”
Marianne Vale appeared in the doorway.
“I brought it.”
Everyone turned.
The former assistant looked exhausted.
“I needed you to find the final account.”
Adrian’s voice sharpened.
“You could have told us.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Gabriel made me promise.”
Isabelle nearly screamed.
“No more promises from dead men.”
Marianne flinched.
Isabelle softened only slightly.
“My father is gone. I am here. Tell me the truth.”
So Marianne did.
Gabriel had created a final reserve fund.
Not for Isabelle.
For whistleblowers, employees, legal defense, and anyone harmed if a future executive corrupted the company.
The million-dollar “retainer” was not a purchase.
It was bait.
Marianne had triggered it to expose whoever attempted to monetize Damien’s parental rights.
The person who responded was Damien’s former CFO.
Richard Hale.
He had helped structure the shell companies.
Police arrested him that night.
For the first time, the conspiracy had edges.
It was not infinite.
It was greedy people making greedy choices.
Damien.
Richard.
Victor.
Vanessa to a lesser extent.
Sofia through blackmail.
No supernatural mastermind.
No invincible enemy.
Just consequences accumulating.
Isabelle appreciated that truth.
Real evil was often disappointingly ordinary.
Months passed.
Her pregnancy progressed safely.
The divorce hearing approached.
Damien’s criminal case expanded.
He surrendered additional evidence and pleaded guilty to several financial charges, while other counts remained contested.
Isabelle refused media interviews about the slap.
She did one interview about corporate governance instead.
When asked whether Luca Moretti had rescued her company, she answered:
“No. Evidence rescued it. Accountability rescued it. A lot of people helped me, but I don't need another man receiving credit for work women did.”
Luca watched the interview and laughed.
“I like you,” he told her afterward.
“You're just discovering this?”
“No.”
The answer warmed her.
That night, Isabelle woke to breaking glass.
She sat upright.
Her security alarm activated.
Luca was not there.
Nobody was.
She lived alone now.
She called security and locked her bedroom.
Footsteps downstairs.
Then silence.
Her hand covered her stomach.
“Stay with me, baby.”
A crash.
Someone climbing the stairs.
Police were three minutes away.
Too long.
Isabelle entered the reinforced safe room Adrian had insisted she install.
The monitor showed a masked figure moving through the hallway.
Not toward valuables.
Toward her office.
The intruder opened her desk.
Removed something.
Then looked directly at the hidden camera.
He took off his mask.
Isabelle gasped.
Richard Hale.
But Richard was supposed to be in federal custody.
Her phone rang.
Adrian.
“Bella, listen carefully. Richard escaped during a hospital transfer.”
On the monitor, Richard turned toward the safe-room door.
He seemed to know exactly where it was.
Then he lifted a small device.
The electronic lock beeped.
Once.
Twice.
May you like
Green.
And the safe-room door began opening.
