Chapter 1 - The Slap Beneath the Chandeliers

Isabelle staggered backward and whispered, “You hit me.”

Adrian Voss entered the ballroom carrying a black merger folder.

A handwritten number showed beneath its torn label.

Forty-seven million.

This was no longer about an affair.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Four hundred guests stood beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Grand Beaumont ballroom, watching Isabelle Cole press two fingers against her bleeding lip.

Damien’s hand remained suspended near his chest.

As if even he could not quite believe what he had done.

Vanessa Reyes stood behind him in her red silk gown, her fingers wrapped around Damien’s arm.

Isabelle looked at those fingers.

Then at the bracelet around Vanessa’s wrist.

Her bracelet.

Damien had given it to Isabelle on their third anniversary.

She had spent months believing she had misplaced it.

Something inside her became very quiet.

“Bella.”

Adrian’s voice came from behind her.

She turned.

Her three brothers had arrived.

Adrian walked first, composed in his charcoal suit. Malik followed, his face so still that Isabelle knew he was furious. Theo was already moving faster than the others.

He saw Isabelle’s cheek.

“No.”

Theo crossed the ballroom.

Damien barely had time to turn before Theo seized the front of his tuxedo.

“You hit my sister.”

“Theo.”

Isabelle spoke softly.

Her brother stopped.

Every muscle in his arms remained rigid, but after a long second he released Damien.

Damien straightened his jacket.

“This is a private marital matter.”

Theo laughed once.

There was nothing amused about it.

“You made it public when you hit her in front of four hundred witnesses.”

Adrian reached Isabelle.

His hand rose toward her cheek but stopped before touching the swelling skin.

“Bella. Are you hurt anywhere else?”

“No.”

It was automatic.

The answer she had given people for years whenever Damien humiliated her privately, dismissed her ideas publicly, or reminded her that Cole Meridian belonged to him now.

Then her hand drifted toward her stomach.

Malik saw it.

His eyes narrowed.

Theo saw it next.

Adrian looked down.

Isabelle closed her eyes.

Not like this.

She had imagined telling her family over Sunday dinner.

She had imagined their ridiculous excitement.

Instead Malik turned slowly toward Damien.

“You struck your pregnant wife.”

The room changed.

Damien stared at Isabelle.

“Pregnant?”

Vanessa’s hand fell away from his arm.

Isabelle met her husband’s eyes.

For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely shocked.

“You’re pregnant?”

“I was going to tell you tonight.”

“When?”

“After your speech.”

Damien took one step toward her.

A voice stopped him.

“I wouldn’t take another step toward her.”

The enormous ballroom doors were still open.

Luca Moretti stood beneath them.

Silence spread outward from the entrance.

Luca was dressed entirely in black, but it was not his clothes that made people move aside.

It was the way he entered a room without asking it to acknowledge him.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Theo muttered something under his breath.

Malik simply watched.

Luca crossed the marble floor.

His eyes never left Isabelle.

She had not seen him in six years.

Not since three months before her wedding.

Not since the night he had asked her one question she had been too afraid to answer.

Are you certain Damien loves you—or does he love what you can build for him?

She had hated Luca for saying it.

Mostly because part of her had wondered whether he was right.

Now he stopped several feet away.

His gaze settled on the blood at the corner of her mouth.

Something dangerous passed through his expression.

Then disappeared.

“Who did that?”

“You know who,” Theo said.

Luca looked at Damien.

Damien attempted a smile.

“Moretti. This doesn't concern you.”

“No?”

“No.”

Luca reached inside his jacket.

Several guests stepped backward.

He removed an envelope.

Nothing more.

Yet Damien’s face changed.

Isabelle noticed.

So did Adrian.

Luca handed the envelope to her.

“What is this?” she asked.

“Something your husband hoped nobody would find until Monday.”

Damien moved.

“Don’t open that.”

Isabelle looked at him.

Five years of marriage.

Five years of defending him.

Five years of explaining away missed dinners, unexplained trips, coldness, secrets.

Two hours ago he had asked for a divorce.

Minutes ago he had hit her.

And yet this was the first moment she truly became afraid of him.

Because Damien was not angry anymore.

He was terrified.

Isabelle opened the envelope.

Inside was a corporate filing.

At the top was the name of a holding company she had never heard before.

VALCROSS CAPITAL.

Below it were authorization signatures.

Damien Cole.

Vanessa Reyes.

And Isabelle Cole.

She stared at her own name.

“I never signed this.”

Adrian immediately took the page.

His eyes moved rapidly across it.

“How much?”

Luca answered.

“Forty-seven million dollars.”

Malik stepped closer.

“Transferred where?”

“Three shell companies. Then overseas.”

Damien shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.”

Adrian held up the merger folder he had carried into the room.

“Is it?”

Damien stared at it.

Isabelle recognized the folder.

She had found it that evening in the private reception room after Damien and Vanessa left her there with unsigned divorce papers.

She had opened it because one page had contained her maiden name.

Voss.

That was why she had locked herself in the bathroom.

That was why she had texted her brothers.

I need my brothers. Come now.

But she had not understood what she found.

Adrian apparently did.

“This merger uses Voss family intellectual property as collateral,” he said.

Damien swallowed.

“It was legally licensed.”

“By whom?”

“My attorneys.”

“That wasn't my question.”

The ballroom remained silent enough that Isabelle could hear the faint hum of the air-conditioning.

Adrian turned one page.

Then another.

“You needed Isabelle’s authorization because the original patents remained partly registered through the trust our father created for her.”

Damien said nothing.

Adrian raised his eyes.

“So you forged it.”

Vanessa suddenly stepped backward.

Damien noticed.

“Don't.”

She stopped.

Isabelle looked between them.

“You knew?”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“Isabelle—”

“You knew he was using my name?”

“I didn't know everything.”

“But you knew something.”

Vanessa looked toward Damien.

That glance answered more than words could.

Isabelle felt nausea rise.

She gripped the edge of a nearby table.

Luca moved instinctively toward her.

Adrian reached her first.

“You need to sit down.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re bleeding and pregnant.”

“I said I’m fine.”

Her voice cracked.

Everyone became quiet again.

Isabelle looked at Damien.

“Was any of it real?”

His brow tightened.

“What?”

“Us.”

“Don't do this here.”

“Where would you prefer? Upstairs? Where there aren't witnesses?”

“Isabelle.”

“Was our marriage real?”

For one second, something resembling shame appeared in his face.

Then Damien glanced toward his board members.

His investors.

His carefully cultivated world.

And Isabelle understood.

Even now, he was calculating.

“I loved you,” he said.

Loved.

Past tense.

She nodded once.

“Thank you.”

That frightened him more than anger would have.

“Bella—”

“Don't call me that.”

Only her brothers called her Bella.

And once, years ago, Luca had.

Never Damien.

She removed her wedding ring.

Damien watched.

She placed it on the white tablecloth between them.

The small metallic sound seemed impossibly loud.

“I'll sign your divorce papers,” she said.

His shoulders loosened slightly.

“After my attorney reviews every document you've put my name on.”

His relief vanished.

“And after a forensic accountant reviews every dollar that passed through Cole Meridian.”

Vanessa whispered, “Damien.”

He spun toward her.

“Be quiet.”

That was when Isabelle knew Vanessa was frightened too.

Not jealous.

Not embarrassed.

Frightened.

Adrian leaned toward Isabelle.

“We're leaving.”

“No.”

All three brothers looked at her.

Isabelle wiped the last trace of blood from her lip.

“This gala was supposed to announce Damien’s merger.”

She looked toward the stage.

“Let him announce it.”

Damien stared.

“What are you doing?”

“Giving you your moment.”

She stepped away.

Damien caught her wrist.

Luca moved.

So did Theo.

But Isabelle looked down at Damien’s hand.

“Take your hand off me.”

He released her.

Immediately.

She walked toward the stage.

The crowd parted.

She climbed the steps and approached the microphone.

Her cheek burned.

Her heart hammered.

But her voice was steady.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the interruption.”

Damien whispered from below, “Isabelle, don't.”

She continued.

“Tonight was intended to celebrate Cole Meridian’s largest acquisition.”

She looked at the investors.

“The merger will not be announced tonight.”

A murmur swept across the ballroom.

“Because documents associated with that transaction appear to contain my forged signature.”

Chaos erupted.

Board members shouted.

Phones appeared.

Damien rushed toward the stage.

Then Isabelle’s own phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She glanced down.

One message.

DON'T TRUST LUCA MORETTI. ASK HIM WHO REALLY OWNS VALCROSS.

Her breathing stopped.

A second message appeared.

Then a photograph began downloading.

It showed Luca standing beside Damien.

The timestamp was eleven months old.

Exactly when Damien’s affair had begun.

Isabelle slowly raised her eyes toward Luca.

His expression changed when he saw her face.

The photograph finished loading.

May you like

And beneath it appeared three words.

LUCA STARTED EVERYTHING.
