Chapter 8 - The Child Damien Never Knew About

The clause changed everything.
Gabriel had designed the trust to pass ultimately to Isabelle’s children.
That meant Damien, as the child’s father, could attempt to claim influence.
Not ownership.
But leverage.
Isabelle refused to panic.
Her attorneys established protections immediately.
Damien would receive no corporate control through paternity.
The child would be protected independently.
Then Damien requested to see Isabelle from custody.
She went with her attorney.
He looked older behind the glass.
“I need to know something,” he said.
“What?”
“Is the baby healthy?”
The question surprised her.
“Yes.”
His eyes closed.
Relief.
For a moment she saw the young man she once loved.
Then she remembered that love did not erase harm.
“I'm sorry about 2019.”
“You should have told me.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of my grief?”
“Of your brothers.”
She almost laughed.
“You were more afraid of losing your company than letting your wife mourn her own child.”
His silence confirmed it.
“I loved you badly,” he said.
“Yes.”
That was perhaps the truest thing Damien had ever said.
He agreed to provide passwords to hidden accounts.
Not from nobility.
His attorney had negotiated cooperation.
But the information helped recover millions.
Vanessa also cooperated.
Sofia faced charges but surrendered all records.
Weeks passed.
Isabelle’s bruises faded.
Her divorce moved forward.
She returned to Cole Meridian for the first time.
Employees stood as she entered.
She hated that.
“Sit down,” she said.
Nervous laughter.
Then she addressed them.
“This company isn't becoming Voss Meridian. It isn't becoming Isabelle Cole Industries. Nobody needs another monument to a surname.”
She announced a temporary independent board.
Audits.
Employee protections.
Restoration of stolen pension funds Damien had diverted.
She would rebuild.
Not inherit.
That evening Luca waited outside.
“Dinner?”
She studied him.
“Is that a date?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
His smile appeared.
“Because you're still married.”
“Annoyingly honorable.”
“I have my moments.”
They ate noodles from takeout cartons in her office.
It reminded her of the beginning with Damien.
But this time she did not mistake struggle for proof of love.
Luca asked about her work.
He listened to the answer.
That difference felt enormous.
Then Malik entered carrying a folder.
“Sorry.”
“You don't look sorry.”
“I'm not.”
He handed Isabelle the folder.
DNA test authorization.
Damien had requested prenatal paternity testing through his lawyer.
Isabelle frowned.
“He thinks the baby isn't his?”
“No.”
Malik pointed to another page.
“He wants to establish paternity immediately.”
“Why?”
Luca read the filing.
His face hardened.
Because someone had offered to buy Damien’s parental claim against the trust.
An anonymous bidder.
Legally absurd, probably unenforceable.
But financially revealing.
Someone still believed the child could unlock Gabriel’s assets.
The bidder had transferred a million-dollar retainer.
From an account they recognized.
Valcross Capital.
Isabelle stared at Luca.
“You said Valcross belonged to my trust.”
“It does.”
“Then who authorized this?”
He looked genuinely stunned.
“No one.”
Her computer chimed.
A remote login.
Someone had entered the trust administration system.
Then a name appeared on-screen.
GABRIEL VOSS.
May you like
Her dead father’s master credentials had just been used.
And this time, the login came from inside the building.
