Chapter 13 - The Empire Built on Isabelle’s Name

Victor did not run.

He sat at Isabelle’s kitchen table.

“I knew this was coming.”

“You funded Damien?”

“Partly.”

“Why?”

Victor explained.

He had wanted back into the Voss empire after Gabriel excluded him from major decisions.

Damien offered him a path.

Victor provided money.

Richard provided access.

Damien provided ambition.

Then everything grew beyond Victor’s control.

“Why come here tonight?”

“To confess before someone else does it for me.”

“You already admitted involvement.”

“Not all of it.”

Victor had funded the first shell company.

He had also given Damien copies of old Voss signatures.

Including Isabelle’s.

Adrian stood.

“You gave him our sister’s signature?”

Victor looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Theo turned away before anger controlled him.

Isabelle remained seated.

“What else?”

“I told him about the trust.”

Silence.

Damien had not discovered it accidentally.

Victor told him.

“Why?”

“I wanted him to challenge it. If the trust collapsed, certain assets reverted to the wider family.”

“To you.”

“Yes.”

Isabelle nodded.

“Thank you for finally telling the truth.”

Victor looked surprised.

Then she added:

“You need to leave.”

“Bella—”

“Don't call me that.”

He left.

The next morning, Victor surrendered to investigators.

More charges followed.

The final architecture was complete.

No hidden mastermind remained.

No magical conspiracy.

A chain of greed.

Each person believing the next compromise would solve the previous one.

Damien’s sentencing arrived.

Isabelle attended.

Not for revenge.

For closure.

The judge imposed a substantial prison sentence for the financial crimes to which Damien pleaded guilty, with other restitution and restrictions.

Damien stood before being taken away.

He looked at Isabelle.

No smile.

No anger.

Just a man facing consequences.

She nodded once.

He nodded back.

Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded her.

She said only:

“My child and I are healthy. The company is rebuilding. I have nothing else to say about my former marriage.”

Then she went home.

Labor began that night.

Of course it did.

Her water broke while Theo was arguing with Malik about assembling a crib.

Chaos followed.

Adrian forgot the hospital bag.

Malik drove too fast.

Theo called Luca six times despite Luca being in the car directly behind them.

Isabelle laughed through contractions.

At the hospital, everything became harder.

Hours.

Pain.

Fear.

At one point the baby’s heart rate dipped.

Doctors entered quickly.

Luca stood outside because Isabelle had chosen her brothers and medical team for the most intense moments.

He respected that.

Then Isabelle asked for him.

He entered.

She grabbed his hand.

“I'm scared.”

“I know.”

“Don't tell me everything will be fine.”

“I won't.”

“Tell me something true.”

He leaned close.

“You're not alone.”

That was true.

She held on.

Hours later, a baby cried.

Isabelle sobbed.

Her son was placed against her chest.

Small.

Warm.

Furious at existence.

Perfect.

“Hello,” she whispered.

She named him Gabriel Malik Voss.

Not Cole.

But when the birth certificate arrived, Isabelle paused at the father section.

Damien’s legal paternity remained.

She would not erase biology.

She would not confuse truth with loyalty.

Luca held Gabriel later.

He looked terrified.

“You've negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions,” Isabelle teased.

“They don't move unexpectedly.”

The baby yawned.

Luca’s eyes filled.

Then a nurse entered carrying flowers.

“No sender.”

Isabelle frowned.

Inside the flowers was an envelope.

A handwritten message.

For my son.

She recognized Damien’s handwriting.

But beneath the note was something else.

May you like

A key.

And attached to it was a tag bearing the address of a storage unit nobody knew existed.
