Chapter 11 - The Brother Who Knew Too Much

“The photograph is real,” Luca said.

Isabelle could barely hear him.

“My father died seven years ago.”

“Yes.”

“This says six months later.”

“The date is wrong.”

“Prove it.”

Luca obtained the original metadata.

The photograph had been taken eight months before Gabriel died.

The displayed date had been altered.

Damien was manipulating her again.

But one mystery remained.

Why that photograph?

Adrian knew.

“The man behind Dad.”

Isabelle zoomed in.

A blurred figure stood near the edge.

Richard Hale.

Before he became Damien’s CFO, Richard had worked for Gabriel.

That was the missing connection.

Gabriel discovered Richard stealing.

He fired him.

Damien later hired him knowingly.

Together, they exploited Gabriel’s old corporate systems.

Adrian had known Richard’s history.

“You never told me.”

“I thought Dad handled it.”

“You keep saying that.”

Adrian looked wounded.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No. You were deciding for me.”

Her brothers fell silent.

Isabelle looked at all three.

“I love you. But I need brothers, not guards.”

Theo looked at the floor.

Malik nodded first.

Adrian took longer.

Then he said, “You're right.”

It was the hardest apology of all because it came from love rather than malice.

Protection could still become control.

Isabelle would not trade one cage for a kinder one.

At Damien’s next hearing, prosecutors presented evidence.

Damien changed his plea on several counts.

He admitted forging Isabelle’s authorization.

Admitted concealing the 2019 miscarriage.

Admitted using Vanessa.

Admitted hiring Richard despite knowing his history.

But he denied ordering violence against Isabelle.

Evidence supported that denial.

Richard had acted independently during the break-in.

Truth, Isabelle learned, did not need every villain to be guilty of everything.

After court, Damien asked for one minute.

“You won,” he said.

“This wasn't a game.”

“It was to me.”

That confession was more disturbing than any excuse.

“Why?”

“Because your family always made me feel poor.”

“My brothers?”

“Your name. Your father. Luca.”

“I loved you when you had nothing.”

“I know.”

“Then why wasn't that enough?”

Damien looked through the courthouse windows.

“Because I didn't want to be loved despite having nothing. I wanted nobody to remember I ever had nothing.”

There it was.

Not justification.

Explanation.

Isabelle touched her stomach.

“I hope someday you understand what that cost.”

His eyes dropped toward her child.

“Will you tell him about me?”

“If he asks.”

“Will you tell him I loved him?”

Isabelle paused.

“You didn't know him long enough to prove that.”

Damien flinched.

“But you'll have opportunities, if the court determines they're safe. What you do with them will answer his question better than anything I say.”

She walked away.

Outside, Luca waited.

Not too close.

Never assuming.

She approached him.

“Coffee?”

“Coffee.”

Six months earlier she might have wanted him to save her.

Now she wanted him to know her.

There was a difference.

That evening, Adrian called.

Gabriel’s archive was being catalogued before transfer to Isabelle.

One final recording had been found.

It was labeled:

FOR ISABELLE—ONLY AFTER SHE CHOOSES HERSELF.

She gathered her brothers.

Luca offered to leave.

“Stay,” she said.

They pressed play.

Gabriel appeared on-screen.

Older.

Tired.

Smiling.

“My Bella.”

Isabelle began crying immediately.

“If you're watching this, I probably failed at something fathers often fail at. I tried so hard to protect you that I may have forgotten your life belongs to you.”

Adrian lowered his head.

Gabriel continued.

“There is one final thing I never told any of you.”

Theo looked up.

The recording crackled.

Gabriel leaned closer to the camera.

“It concerns your mother.”

The screen suddenly went black.

Then a second video file appeared.

Its title contained a woman's name none of the siblings recognized.

And Adrian whispered, “Who is Elena Vale?”
