Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Red Dress

The certificate belonged to a six-year-old boy.
Mother: Vanessa Reyes.
Father: Damien Cole.
Isabelle could not speak.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.”
Damien’s attorney looked confused.
Vanessa grabbed the certificate.
“This isn't real.”
“You have a son?” Isabelle whispered.
“No!”
Her denial was immediate.
“I've never had a child.”
Adrian examined the certificate.
Forgery.
Another forged document.
But why?
Malik found the answer.
The supposed child was beneficiary of a trust containing eight million dollars.
Damien had invented an heir.
A nonexistent child.
And moved money into his name.
Vanessa stared at Damien across the room.
“You used me.”
Damien remained silent.
She slapped him.
The sound was sharp.
Isabelle flinched despite herself.
Vanessa turned toward her.
“I knew about the affair. Obviously. I knew he was hiding money. I didn't know he forged your signature. I didn't know about your father's patents.”
“You slept with my husband.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
That surprised Isabelle.
Vanessa removed the bracelet.
“I knew this was yours.”
She placed it on the table.
“I wanted you to notice.”
“Why?”
“Because he kept promising he would tell you.”
Isabelle looked at the bracelet.
“I thought you wanted my life.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I thought your life was perfect.”
The tragedy of that sentence settled between them.
Vanessa gave investigators access to her phone.
Messages.
Transfers.
Recordings.
Damien’s network began unraveling.
Yet Luca remained a separate mystery.
At dawn, Isabelle left the hotel with her brothers.
Luca followed in another car.
They went to the old Voss building downtown.
Gabriel’s private vault had remained sealed behind the former chairman’s office.
Luca’s key opened it.
Inside were documents, photographs, and one handwritten ledger.
Adrian lifted it carefully.
Their father had documented everything.
Investments.
Patents.
Private loans.
Then Isabelle found Luca’s name.
Beside it:
Guardian of I.C. Trust.
She looked at him.
“You weren't the owner.”
“Not personally.”
“You were protecting it.”
“Yes.”
“For seven years?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Luca’s expression softened.
“Because I promised him.”
She turned another page.
A letter slipped out.
For Luca.
He opened it.
Gabriel’s words were brief.
If my daughter ever learns what you sacrificed for her, she will ask why. Tell her the truth, even if she hates you for it.
Isabelle stared.
“What did you sacrifice?”
Luca closed his eyes.
“My company.”
“Why?”
“Damien’s first major investor demanded your algorithm as collateral. Your father couldn't legally stop you from signing it away.”
“I remember.”
“You were twenty-five.”
“I knew what I was doing.”
“No. Damien told you it was temporary.”
She remembered.
Luca continued.
“I bought the investor out.”
Her mouth opened.
“You?”
“It cost me controlling interest in Moretti Shipping.”
That had been the scandal that supposedly drove Luca overseas.
He had lost half his empire.
Because of her.
“Why would you do that?”
He looked at her.
There was no dramatic confession.
Only seven years of silence in his eyes.
“Because you mattered.”
Isabelle looked away.
She was married.
Pregnant.
Heartbroken.
And suddenly standing beside a man who had protected something she herself had forgotten was worth protecting.
Her work.
Her future.
Her name.
Adrian interrupted.
“There’s another compartment.”
Behind the ledger was a small recorder.
Gabriel’s voice filled the vault.
“If Isabelle is hearing this, then Damien has crossed the line I hoped he never would.”
Isabelle gripped the table.
Her father continued.
“Damien believes the trust protects money. It doesn't.”
Adrian frowned.
“What does it protect?”
The recording answered.
“It protects controlling ownership of Cole Meridian.”
Silence.
Isabelle stared at the machine.
Her father’s voice continued.
“The company Damien believes belongs to him was built on intellectual property my daughter created. If he ever attempts to transfer, sell, or leverage that property fraudulently, a dormant clause activates.”
Malik whispered, “Jesus.”
Gabriel spoke his final sentence.
“Control returns to Isabelle.”
Her phone rang.
The caller was Damien.
She almost ignored it.
Then answered.
His voice was low.
“You opened the vault.”
“How do you know?”
A pause.
Then Damien said something that turned her blood cold.
“Because I'm watching you.”
May you like
The lights in the office went out.
And somewhere behind the vault wall, something clicked open.
