Chapter 2 - The Black King Walks In

Isabelle stared at Luca across the ballroom.

“Tell me that photograph is fake.”

“It isn't.”

Her brothers turned toward him.

Theo stepped forward.

“You have about five seconds.”

Luca ignored him.

“Not here.”

Isabelle laughed bitterly.

“Apparently everyone gets to decide where I learn the truth except me.”

Police had not yet arrived, but hotel security had closed the ballroom doors. Damien’s board members were clustered near the stage, talking urgently.

Damien stood with his attorney.

Vanessa had disappeared.

Isabelle noticed.

“Where is she?”

Malik scanned the room.

“Vanessa?”

“She was standing beside Damien.”

Not anymore.

Damien heard them.

His face changed.

Luca saw it too.

“She has something,” Luca said.

Damien moved toward the exit.

Theo blocked him.

“Going somewhere?”

“My lawyer advised me to leave.”

“Your lawyer can advise you from right there.”

Luca turned to Isabelle.

“Valcross was mine.”

The words landed heavily.

“Was?”

“I founded it twelve years ago.”

Adrian frowned.

“You told everyone you sold your position.”

“I did.”

“To whom?”

Luca looked directly at Isabelle.

“A trust.”

“What trust?”

“Yours.”

She stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“It wasn't supposed to yet.”

Luca explained that years earlier, when Cole Meridian was little more than Damien’s idea and Isabelle’s work, Luca had invested quietly.

Not in Damien.

In her.

Isabelle had created the logistics algorithm that became the foundation of the company’s success. Damien had presented it to investors. She had allowed him to because they were engaged and because she believed they were building one life.

Luca had known differently.

He had arranged for Valcross to purchase certain rights and place them in a protected trust tied to Isabelle.

“Why?”

“Because your father asked me to.”

Her anger disappeared.

“My father?”

Adrian looked equally stunned.

Their father, Gabriel Voss, had died seven years earlier.

Before Isabelle married Damien.

“He knew Damien was ambitious,” Luca said. “He didn't oppose the marriage. But he wanted one piece of your work protected from anyone—including your husband.”

Damien shouted from across the ballroom.

“He's lying!”

Luca turned.

“Then you won't mind an audit.”

Damien said nothing.

Isabelle studied Luca.

“Why were you meeting Damien eleven months ago?”

“Because he discovered the trust.”

“And?”

“He wanted me to sell him Valcross.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“What did you do?”

“I told him that if you requested control, I would transfer everything to you.”

The photograph suddenly made sense.

But not the message.

“Who sent this?”

Nobody knew.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

His security chief.

Vanessa had been spotted leaving through the hotel kitchen carrying a silver laptop bag.

Damien closed his eyes.

Malik saw.

“What’s on the laptop?”

Damien remained silent.

Theo smiled without humor.

“That's becoming your favorite answer.”

Adrian dispatched security.

Isabelle suddenly felt dizzy.

Luca caught her elbow.

This time she didn't pull away.

Her brothers exchanged glances.

“I need air,” she said.

Luca accompanied her toward a private lounge.

Theo started following.

Isabelle stopped him.

“Please.”

Theo hesitated.

Then nodded.

Inside the lounge, Isabelle sat.

Luca poured water.

She watched his hands.

“You knew I was married.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Damien was stealing from me.”

“I suspected it.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I tried six years ago.”

“You told me not to marry him. That's different.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me about Valcross?”

“Your father made me promise.”

“My father is dead.”

“The trust conditions weren't.”

She stared at him.

“What conditions?”

Luca placed the glass down.

“You had to discover the betrayal yourself.”

Isabelle recoiled.

“That sounds cruel.”

“It was.”

“You agreed?”

“I was twenty-nine and thought your father was the smartest man alive.”

“And now?”

“Now I think he was terrified his daughter loved someone enough to ignore every warning.”

Her eyes filled.

She hated that sentence because it was true.

Luca sat opposite her.

“I never wanted tonight.”

“What did you want?”

His answer came too quickly.

“You safe.”

Silence.

Six years vanished for a second.

She remembered Luca outside her rehearsal dinner, telling her he would leave the country before watching her marry Damien.

She had thought it was arrogance.

Maybe it had been pain.

Before she could ask, the lounge door opened.

Malik entered.

“We found Vanessa’s bag.”

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

He placed the silver laptop bag on the table.

Empty.

Except for a pregnancy test.

Positive.

Isabelle stared.

Malik looked uncomfortable.

“It may be hers.”

Her stomach turned.

Damien’s mistress might also be pregnant.

Then Luca reached inside the bag.

His fingers touched a hidden seam.

He tore it open.

A small flash drive fell onto the table.

Written across it in black marker was one name.

ISABELLE.

They inserted it into Malik’s laptop.

One video file appeared.

Dated three weeks earlier.

Security footage.

Damien and Vanessa stood inside Isabelle’s home office.

Vanessa was crying.

Damien held papers.

The audio crackled.

Then Vanessa said clearly:

“If Isabelle discovers what you did to her father, none of this matters.”

Isabelle stopped breathing.

Damien answered.

“She'll never know.”

The video froze.

Someone had deliberately cut the rest.

Then the lounge door handle began to turn.

Nobody outside had knocked.

Luca rose.

May you like

The door opened.

And the person standing there whispered Isabelle’s childhood nickname.
