Chapter 3 - The Signature That Was Never Hers

“Bella.”
Isabelle froze.
Only family used that name.
The woman in the doorway was perhaps sixty, silver threaded through dark hair.
Adrian appeared behind her.
“It's okay. Let her in.”
Isabelle recognized her slowly.
“Marianne?”
Marianne Vale had been Gabriel Voss’s executive assistant for nearly twenty years.
She had disappeared shortly after his death.
“I’m sorry,” Marianne said.
“For what?”
“For waiting this long.”
She carried a weathered document case.
Inside were Gabriel’s private records.
Her father had suspected financial manipulation before his death. Not murder, Marianne emphasized. Gabriel had suffered a documented heart attack.
But someone had exploited the chaos surrounding his final months.
Damien.
Years before marrying Isabelle, Damien had approached Gabriel for investment.
Gabriel refused.
Later Damien gained access to preliminary patent documents through Isabelle.
“He told me Dad approved.”
“He didn't.”
Marianne produced a letter.
Isabelle recognized her father’s handwriting.
If Isabelle chooses Damien, I will respect her choice. But protect what she created until she can protect it herself.
Isabelle cried silently.
Not because her father had distrusted Damien.
Because he had trusted her enough to let her make the mistake.
The forged Valcross authorization was only one piece.
Dozens of signatures had been copied over five years.
Corporate guarantees.
Licensing agreements.
Loans.
Damien had gradually built his empire against assets belonging partly to Isabelle.
“He didn't marry me for them,” Isabelle whispered.
Marianne hesitated.
That hesitation hurt.
“He knew who you were.”
Before Isabelle could respond, shouting erupted outside.
They rushed back into the ballroom.
Vanessa had returned.
Her hair was disheveled.
She was crying.
Damien looked horrified.
“Where were you?”
“Getting insurance.”
She held up a phone.
“You told me Isabelle knew nothing.”
“Vanessa, shut up.”
“You said she'd sign the divorce and we'd leave together.”
Isabelle walked closer.
“What insurance?”
Vanessa looked at her.
For the first time, the mistress seemed less like a rival and more like another person who had made a disastrous bargain with Damien Cole.
“He keeps recordings.”
“Of what?”
“Everyone.”
Damien lunged.
Theo blocked him.
Vanessa continued.
“Investors. Board members. Employees. You.”
Isabelle went cold.
“Me?”
“He recorded your office. Your bedroom. Your calls with your brothers.”
Damien shouted, “She's lying!”
Vanessa laughed hysterically.
“You promised me we'd be married by Christmas.”
Isabelle looked at the pregnancy test.
Vanessa followed her gaze.
“No.”
“What?”
“That's not mine.”
The room became still.
Vanessa looked at Isabelle’s stomach.
“I found it in Damien’s desk three weeks ago.”
Isabelle’s skin prickled.
Her pregnancy test had disappeared from her bathroom.
She had assumed she threw it away.
Damien had known.
All night.
When he demanded the divorce.
When he stood beside Vanessa.
When he slapped her.
“You knew I was pregnant.”
Damien’s face collapsed.
“Isabelle—”
“You knew.”
“I was trying to protect—”
“Don't.”
Her voice stopped him.
Vanessa slowly opened her phone.
“There’s something else.”
A recording played.
Damien’s voice.
“If she announces the pregnancy, the divorce becomes complicated. Get her signature tonight before she says anything.”
Isabelle closed her eyes.
Adrian placed a hand on her shoulder.
When she opened them, Damien looked smaller.
Not less dangerous.
Just smaller.
“I want him out.”
Hotel security moved.
Damien resisted.
“You can't do this! This is my gala!”
Adrian replied, “Not anymore.”
As security escorted him away, Damien twisted toward Isabelle.
“You think your brothers can protect you from this?”
She said nothing.
“You don't even know what Luca did!”
Luca stiffened.
Damien laughed.
“Ask him where he was the night your father died!”
Everyone turned toward Luca.
Isabelle felt the floor vanish beneath her.
“Where were you?”
Luca didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
“Luca.”
His jaw tightened.
“At the hospital.”
“Why?”
“Because your father called me.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“He asked me not to tell you.”
Her anger returned.
“What did he say?”
Luca looked toward Marianne.
Marianne lowered her eyes.
“Luca?”
“He gave me something.”
“What?”
Luca reached beneath his shirt and pulled out a small old key on a chain.
“I've carried it for seven years.”
Isabelle stared at it.
“What does it open?”
“Your father's private vault.”
“Where?”
Luca’s gaze shifted toward the ballroom entrance.
A police officer had arrived.
Beside him stood Damien’s attorney.
The attorney carried a sealed evidence envelope.
He looked directly at Isabelle.
“Mrs. Cole, before my client says another word, you need to see what's inside this.”
He placed the envelope on the table.
Isabelle reached for the seal.
Inside was a birth certificate.
May you like
She read the name.
And everything she believed about Damien changed again.
