Chapter 9 - The Empty Grave

The grave was already open when they arrived.

Margaret’s headstone stood beneath portable work lights.

Daniel was kneeling beside the empty coffin.

“Elena?”

She ran toward him.

“Where is the ledger?”

Daniel lifted a metal case.

“Here.”

Adrian looked inside.

File 17.

Daniel had hidden it inside Margaret’s fake grave twenty-one years earlier.

“Why leave the hospital alone?”

“Because Margaret monitors everyone around you.”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Especially him.”

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Federal agents.

Adrian’s time had run out.

He looked at Elena.

“I have to go.”

She understood.

He would surrender.

Before he could leave, Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Not yet.”

He opened the ledger.

A final page contained names.

One was a federal prosecutor.

The same prosecutor directing Adrian’s arrest.

Margaret had infiltrated the investigation.

If Adrian surrendered to the wrong team, he might never reach court.

They needed someone clean.

Elena knew one person.

Rebecca Shaw.

A federal judge who had attended Elena’s presentation.

Rebecca had publicly challenged several corrupt waterfront contracts.

Elena called her.

Rebecca listened.

Then said, “Come directly to my chambers. Trust nobody else.”

They drove separately.

Julian carried copies.

Vanessa brought payment records.

Claire and Daniel brought testimony.

Adrian brought himself.

Elena brought the ledger.

For the first time, every piece existed in one place.

Rebecca examined the evidence for nearly two hours.

“This can dismantle the entire network.”

Adrian said, “Including me.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“Yes.”

Elena watched him.

He did not flinch.

“I’ll testify.”

That changed everything.

Adrian agreed to expose every criminal relationship he had inherited or participated in.

No immunity guarantee.

No secret escape.

Truth.

Rebecca arranged protected federal custody.

Before agents arrived, Elena and Adrian stood alone.

“I don’t know what happens now,” he said.

“I do.”

He looked at her.

“You tell the truth.”

“And us?”

Elena touched his face.

“We find out afterward.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then the windows shattered.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Rebecca shouted for everyone to get down.

Security rushed toward the hallway.

The lights died.

Emergency alarms sounded.

Elena heard footsteps.

A woman entered the dark chamber.

Margaret.

May you like

She pointed a gun directly at Elena.

And smiled.
