Chapter 8 - The Woman With the Gun

Vanessa pointed the weapon past Elena.

Not at her.

At Margaret.

The older woman stood at the far end of the tunnel.

Julian helped Adrian climb out.

Margaret smiled.

“You disappoint me, Vanessa.”

Vanessa’s hands shook.

“You threatened my sister.”

“I protected her.”

“You kidnapped her.”

Margaret shrugged.

“Semantics.”

Adrian moved forward.

Vanessa said, “Don’t.”

Margaret held a small trigger.

“Everyone stays exactly where they are.”

Elena recognized the device.

“Explosives?”

Daniel’s old network contained demolition charges.

Margaret had wired the tunnels.

“If I cannot have the archive,” Margaret said, “nobody will.”

Elena stepped forward.

“You won’t destroy it.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s your insurance.”

Margaret’s smile faded.

Elena continued.

“You spent decades collecting leverage. You would never destroy the only thing keeping your enemies afraid.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

She was right.

The trigger was probably a bluff.

Margaret saw that realization.

She ran.

Adrian’s men pursued her.

She escaped through an old waterfront exit.

But she left something behind.

Her phone.

Elena opened it.

One outgoing message had been sent seconds earlier.

BURN PARCEL SEVEN.

They raced to the development site.

Flames were already visible.

Julian’s construction office burned.

Elena’s model storage building stood beside it.

Inside were the original documents needed to prove the fraudulent transfer.

Elena ran toward the building.

Adrian caught her.

“No.”

“My records!”

“I can replace paper.”

“Not those.”

Julian appeared.

“I made copies.”

Elena turned.

“What?”

“I digitized everything after tonight started going wrong.”

For the first time, Julian had done something useful without expecting praise.

Firefighters arrived.

By dawn, Parcel Seven still stood.

The evidence survived.

Margaret had lost another weapon.

But Adrian received worse news.

His accounts were frozen.

Multiple federal warrants had been issued.

Margaret had leaked selected evidence portraying Adrian as the sole leader of the Vale criminal network.

He could be arrested within hours.

“Run,” Julian said.

Adrian looked at him.

“You would.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why Elena left you.”

Julian almost smiled.

Elena took Adrian’s hand.

“We don’t run.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You know what those files contain.”

“Yes.”

“They can put me in prison.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re staying?”

“I’m staying while you tell the truth.”

That was not unconditional forgiveness.

It was better.

It was a choice.

Adrian nodded.

They prepared to surrender the entire archive to federal investigators.

Then Claire discovered one missing file.

File 17.

The master ledger.

Without it, Margaret could argue that everything else had been fabricated.

“Who had access?” Elena asked.

Claire checked the security log.

One name appeared.

Daniel Hart.

Elena called her father.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

They reached the medical facility.

Daniel’s room was empty.

His IV lay on the floor.

On his pillow was a note.

Elena recognized his handwriting.

I’M SORRY. I HAVE TO FINISH WHAT I STARTED.

Beneath it was an address.

Elena read it.

Adrian went pale.

“What?”

May you like

“That address,” he said.

“It’s my mother’s grave.”
