Chapter 6 - The Woman in the Garden

Elena ran outside.

Adrian followed.

The woman did not move.

She was older than Elena remembered.

But she was unmistakable.

“Mom?”

Claire Hart began crying.

Elena stopped several feet away.

She had imagined this moment for most of her life.

In those fantasies, she ran into her mother’s arms.

Reality was different.

Reality contained twenty years of funerals, lies, and empty birthdays.

“Why?”

Claire lowered her head.

“To protect you.”

“Everybody keeps saying that.”

“Elena—”

“No. Protection doesn’t look like abandonment.”

Claire accepted the words.

Adrian remained behind Elena.

Claire noticed him.

“You became exactly what Margaret feared.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“What does she fear?”

“You.”

“No.”

Claire looked at Elena.

“Her.”

They entered the house.

Claire explained that Margaret had built her power by controlling secrets.

Politicians owed her.

Developers feared her.

Criminal organizations depended on records she possessed.

But Daniel and Claire had copied those records.

They hid them beneath Parcel Seven.

Then they separated.

Daniel disappeared.

Claire staged her death years later.

They believed Elena would be safer if nobody could use her to find them.

They had been wrong.

“Why marry Adrian?” Claire asked.

Elena stiffened.

“Because I love him.”

Claire smiled sadly.

“That may save all of us.”

Adrian frowned.

“How?”

“The Hart trust and Vale holdings intersect.”

Claire placed two documents together.

“Your marriage merged beneficiary rights neither Margaret nor her lawyers anticipated.”

Elena finally understood why Margaret had resurfaced.

Their marriage threatened her entire empire.

Julian had been used to break Elena publicly, financially, and emotionally.

But Margaret had underestimated something.

Elena was no longer alone.

Julian arrived an hour later carrying records from Mercer Holdings.

“I found payments.”

He placed them down.

Margaret had paid his chief financial officer to arrange the Parcel Seven purchase.

Julian looked at Elena.

“I was jealous.”

She said nothing.

“I hated seeing you succeed without me. So when someone offered me the chance to embarrass you, I took it.”

“That doesn’t make you innocent.”

“I know.”

For once, he did not defend himself.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena believed he meant it.

She did not forgive him.

Not yet.

Adrian opened one financial file.

A name appeared repeatedly.

Vanessa Cole.

Julian stared.

“My Vanessa?”

“She received three payments,” Adrian said.

Julian looked sick.

Elena remembered Vanessa laughing beside him.

Her humiliation had not been spontaneous.

Vanessa had been placed there.

Adrian’s security chief entered.

“We found Ms. Cole.”

“Where?”

“Downstairs.”

They descended.

Vanessa sat alone in the library.

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t know Margaret would try to kill Daniel.”

Julian stared at her.

“You knew everything else?”

Vanessa cried.

“She threatened my family.”

Adrian asked, “Where is Margaret?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Adrian turned away.

“Wait!”

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

“I know where she’s going.”

She produced a key.

Brass.

Old.

Engraved with the same three-line symbol from the warehouse.

“The vault.”

Elena reached for it.

Vanessa pulled back.

“There’s something you need to understand first.”

“What?”

Vanessa looked directly at Elena.

“The vault isn’t empty.”

A noise came from behind the library wall.

Three knocks.

Then a fourth.

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

“She’s already inside the house.”
