Chapter 4 - The Father Elena Buried

Elena did not cry.

She simply sat down.

Adrian crouched beside her.

“Elena.”

She handed him the phone.

“My father.”

Adrian studied the photograph.

A timestamp appeared in the corner.

8:14 A.M.

Today.

The man was older, his hair mostly gray, but Elena knew his eyes.

Daniel Hart.

Her father.

The man whose closed coffin she had stood beside twenty-one years earlier.

“Find him,” she whispered.

Adrian stood.

His organization moved with frightening efficiency.

Within forty minutes they identified the location in the photograph: an abandoned drafting warehouse on the eastern waterfront.

Elena insisted on going.

Julian came too.

Nobody invited him.

“I helped create this mess,” he said. “I’m helping fix it.”

Adrian clearly wanted to refuse.

Elena said, “Let him.”

The warehouse was empty when they arrived.

Almost.

A single drafting table stood beneath a hanging lamp.

On it lay Elena’s original childhood sketchbook.

She recognized the red cover.

Her father had given it to her when she was eight.

She opened it.

Most pages contained childish houses.

One page had been removed.

In its place was a note.

ELENA, IF YOU FOUND THIS, MARGARET FOUND ME FIRST.

Her knees weakened.

Below it:

DO NOT LET HER GET THE AURELIA PLANS.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“What is special about my plans?”

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Julian examined the table.

“There.”

A carved symbol.

A circle intersected by three lines.

Adrian recognized it.

“My father’s organization.”

Elena stared at him.

“You said your father built your business.”

“He built something else first.”

The truth emerged slowly.

Decades earlier, Margaret and Adrian’s father had used construction companies to hide illegal money inside legitimate city redevelopment projects.

Daniel Hart had been their architect.

When Daniel discovered evidence of bribery, extortion, and manipulated land transfers, he tried to expose them.

Then his car exploded.

Everyone believed he died.

Apparently, Daniel had escaped.

Why had he abandoned Elena?

That question hurt more than everything else.

A noise sounded behind them.

Adrian turned.

A man stepped from the shadows.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

Trembling hands.

Elena stopped breathing.

“Dad?”

Daniel Hart looked at his daughter.

Twenty-one years disappeared from his face.

“Elena.”

She crossed the room and slapped him.

Then she hugged him.

Daniel broke down.

“I’m sorry.”

“You were alive.”

“I know.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I know.”

“For twenty-one years.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Elena pushed him away.

“Then tell me everything.”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“The Aurelia project isn’t random.”

“What?”

“Elena designed it on top of the original Vale network.”

Adrian frowned.

Daniel pointed toward Elena’s plans.

“Those six blocks contain the financial records Margaret spent decades trying to bury.”

“Where?”

“Under Parcel Seven.”

Julian whispered a curse.

Daniel nodded.

“That’s why she sold it to you. She needed someone outside Adrian’s control to authorize demolition.”

Elena understood.

The medical center excavation would expose whatever Margaret had hidden.

Julian’s company could destroy it first.

“Records of what?”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Murders.”

Silence.

“Bribes. Judges. Police. Politicians. Everything.”

Adrian asked, “Why return now?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Because Margaret discovered Elena was your wife.”

“And?”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“She believes your marriage gives her the one thing she needs.”

“What?”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

Before he could answer, a red laser dot appeared on his chest.

Elena screamed.

Adrian dragged her down.

Glass shattered.

May you like

Daniel collapsed.

And the envelope he had been reaching for slid across the floor and stopped at Julian’s feet.
