Chapter 7 - The Fourth Knock

Adrian moved Elena behind him.

The library wall opened.

Nobody stood there.

Only a narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Elena stared at Claire.

“You knew this existed?”

“No.”

Adrian did.

His face gave him away.

“This house belonged to my father.”

Elena almost laughed from exhaustion.

“Of course it did.”

They descended.

The tunnel connected to an old service network running beneath several waterfront properties.

At its end was a steel door.

Vanessa’s key opened it.

Inside they found no Margaret.

They found files.

Thousands.

Photographs.

Contracts.

Recorded conversations.

And one video monitor.

It switched on automatically.

Margaret appeared.

“Hello, Elena.”

Elena stepped closer.

Margaret smiled.

“You’ve spent your life believing you were abandoned.”

Claire whispered, “Don’t listen.”

Margaret continued.

“You weren’t abandoned. You were hidden because your parents stole from me.”

Daniel’s voice came through Elena’s phone.

He was listening remotely.

“That’s a lie.”

Margaret laughed.

“Is it?”

Documents appeared onscreen.

One carried Claire’s signature.

Elena turned.

“Mom?”

Claire went pale.

Margaret said, “Ask her who ordered the explosion that supposedly killed your father.”

Elena stared at Claire.

“No.”

Claire began crying.

“I arranged the explosion.”

Elena stepped backward.

“But Daniel wasn’t inside.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

The deception had been deliberate.

Claire and Daniel had staged his death together.

Elena’s childhood grief had been collateral damage.

“I was twelve.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“I know.”

“You let me bury him.”

“I know.”

Elena walked away.

Adrian followed.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“I need one person tonight to respect what I ask.”

He did.

That mattered.

Elena returned to the vault alone several minutes later.

She examined the files.

This was not merely evidence of Margaret’s crimes.

It was evidence of everyone’s compromises.

Her father.

Her mother.

Adrian’s family.

Julian.

Even Adrian.

A ledger contained payments authorized after Adrian inherited the Vale network.

Elena confronted him.

“What are these?”

He looked at the ledger.

“Protection payments.”

“To criminals?”

“To keep them away from businesses under my control.”

“You participated.”

“Yes.”

“Did you hurt people?”

His answer took too long.

“I have.”

Elena felt something break.

Adrian did not excuse himself.

“I became part of the machine because I believed controlling it was better than allowing someone worse to control it.”

“Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“Now I want it gone.”

Elena searched his face.

“Because of me?”

“Because meeting you showed me how much of my life I had accepted simply because I inherited it.”

Before Elena could answer, the vault door slammed.

The lock engaged.

Lights went out.

Emergency lighting flickered red.

Margaret’s voice came through a speaker.

“Very touching.”

Gas began hissing through the vents.

Adrian grabbed Elena.

They ran toward the secondary corridor.

Locked.

Elena found the old architectural plans pinned behind a cabinet.

“There.”

A maintenance shaft.

Adrian forced it open.

They climbed.

The gas thickened.

Elena reached the upper hatch.

It would not move.

Then someone opened it from the other side.

A hand reached down.

Elena grabbed it.

She climbed out.

And found Julian standing above her.

Behind him, Vanessa held a gun.
