Chapter 1 - Right Here

Julian pointed at Elena’s wedding ring and shouted, “So where is this husband?”

A tall man in black stepped away from the glass doors and placed a black invitation card on the drafting table.

Two handwritten letters were visible beneath the embossed crest.

E.H.

Elena realized Julian had mocked the wrong woman in front of the wrong man.

The laughter around the architectural display did not stop immediately.

That was the worst part.

For two or three seconds, Julian Mercer continued grinning as though the ballroom still belonged to him.

He stood beside Elena with one hand extended toward her, his index finger aimed at the thin platinum band around her left ring finger. His cream suit was perfectly tailored. His expensive watch caught the warm light from the pendant fixtures overhead. Beside him, Vanessa Cole—the blonde woman who had spent the evening hanging on Julian’s arm—covered her mouth while laughing.

Elena Hart stared down at the rolled blueprint pressed against her chest.

Three hundred people had been invited to the Grand Aurelia’s private architectural showcase.

Developers.

City officials.

Journalists.

Investors.

Architects who could decide whether Elena’s career survived another year.

And Julian had chosen this room to humiliate her.

Again.

“Come on, Elena,” Julian said. “We’re all curious.”

Vanessa smiled. “Maybe he’s shy.”

Another ripple of uncomfortable laughter moved through the people nearest them.

Elena lifted her eyes.

“Are you finished?”

Julian’s smile widened.

“That depends.”

He nodded toward her wedding band.

“You disappeared for almost two years. Then suddenly you come back wearing that. No wedding announcement. No photographs. Nobody has met him.”

“That sounds like my business.”

“It became interesting when you started telling people you were married.”

“I never told anyone anything.”

Julian leaned closer.

“Exactly.”

Elena could smell the whiskey on his breath.

Once, years ago, she had mistaken his confidence for strength.

She knew better now.

Julian had been charming when they met in graduate school. He had known how to make a crowded room feel as if only two people existed inside it. He remembered birthdays. He sent flowers. He praised Elena’s sketches.

Then Elena began winning competitions he lost.

The compliments changed.

First came jokes about her clothes.

Then her body.

Then her ambition.

Then came the night Julian told her that no serious investor would ever put a woman “like her” in front of a billion-dollar project.

Elena had left him three days later.

Julian apparently had never forgiven her.

Now he looked around the ballroom as though searching for an audience.

He had one.

“So,” he repeated, “where’s your husband?”

Elena’s fingers tightened around the blueprint.

A voice came from behind him.

“Right here.”

The laughter died.

Julian froze.

Vanessa lowered her hand.

Elena closed her eyes for half a second.

She knew that voice.

Low.

Controlled.

Never hurried.

Julian turned.

Adrian Vale stood behind him.

He wore a black tailored suit over a black open-collar shirt. There was no visible weapon, no security badge, nothing announcing authority.

He did not need any of those things.

Adrian was tall enough that Julian had to lift his chin slightly when they faced each other.

His expression was calm.

That calm frightened people who knew his name.

Julian clearly did.

The color disappeared from his face.

“Mr. Vale.”

Adrian looked at Julian’s pointing hand.

Julian lowered it.

Adrian stepped past him and stopped beside Elena.

For the first time that evening, Elena released the breath she had been holding.

Adrian did not touch her immediately.

He looked at her.

That was enough.

His eyes moved over her face, checking silently.

Are you all right?

Elena gave the smallest nod.

Only then did Adrian place one hand gently against the middle of her back.

The gesture was intimate.

Protective.

Unmistakable.

Vanessa stared at Elena’s wedding ring.

Then at Adrian.

Then back at Elena.

“No,” she whispered.

Julian heard her.

His jaw tightened.

Adrian finally looked at him.

“You were asking for Elena’s husband.”

Julian swallowed.

“I didn’t realize—”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice remained quiet.

“You didn’t.”

People nearby began looking away.

That told Elena everything.

Some of them knew Adrian.

More importantly, some of them feared him.

Julian forced a laugh.

“This was just old friends joking.”

“Elena wasn’t laughing.”

“We have history.”

Adrian’s gaze hardened.

“So I’ve heard.”

That answer landed harder than a threat.

Julian glanced at Elena.

“What exactly have you told him?”

Elena almost laughed.

There it was.

Not remorse.

Fear.

He was not worried about what he had done.

He was worried about what Adrian knew.

“Enough,” Elena said.

Julian stared at her.

Adrian’s hand remained steady against her back.

Vanessa stepped away from Julian.

It was subtle, perhaps six inches, but everyone saw it.

Julian saw it too.

His humiliation was beginning.

Yet Elena did not enjoy it.

She wanted to leave.

She had spent fourteen months preparing the Aurelia Renewal proposal. Tonight was supposed to be the culmination of that work.

Her design transformed six abandoned industrial blocks into affordable housing, public gardens, small-business spaces, and a community medical center.

She had not come to settle old scores.

She had come to build something.

“Elena,” Adrian said softly.

She looked at him.

“Your presentation begins in eleven minutes.”

She blinked.

Of course he knew.

“You remembered?”

“I remember everything important to you.”

Something changed in her face.

Julian saw it.

So did Vanessa.

This was not a fake marriage.

Not an arrangement.

Not a rumor.

Adrian Vale loved her.

Julian looked suddenly furious.

“You married him?”

Elena turned toward him.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Eighteen months ago.”

“And you never told me?”

She stared at him.

“Why would I?”

Julian had no answer.

Adrian picked up the rolled blueprint Elena had nearly crushed.

“Come on.”

They began walking toward the main exhibition area.

“Elena.”

Julian’s voice stopped her.

She turned.

He was no longer smiling.

“You should check who owns the land underneath your beautiful little project before you celebrate.”

The ballroom seemed to become quieter.

Elena frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Julian straightened his jacket.

“You think tonight is about architecture?”

Adrian stopped.

For the first time, something sharper appeared behind his eyes.

Julian noticed.

His confidence returned by a fraction.

“That’s right,” Julian said. “Maybe your husband hasn’t told you everything.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

“Adrian?”

He did not answer immediately.

That frightened her more than Julian’s words.

Then Elena’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She opened the message.

There was no text.

Only a photograph.

It showed Elena’s architectural model sitting on the table in front of her.

The picture had been taken less than a minute earlier.

Someone inside the ballroom was watching her.

A second message appeared.

DON’T TRUST YOUR HUSBAND.

Elena looked up.

Across the ballroom, a service door slowly opened.

May you like

Someone was standing behind it.

And that person was holding another photograph of Elena.
