Chapter 13 - The Man Behind Margaret

The handwriting belonged to Adrian’s father.

Victor Vale.

Adrian stared at the photograph.

“My father died when I was nineteen.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I saw his body.”

“Then who wrote this?”

Michael examined the ink.

“Recently.”

Adrian’s world shifted.

Margaret had always been presented as the architect of the network.

Perhaps she had been another piece.

Federal investigators reopened Victor Vale’s death.

Dental records had been falsified.

The body buried under his name belonged to another man.

Victor had survived.

The search lasted three days.

Then Elena received a call.

Victor wanted to meet.

Alone.

Adrian refused.

Elena went anyway—with federal agents nearby.

Victor waited inside the unfinished Aurelia medical center.

He was eighty.

Thin.

Weak.

But his eyes resembled Adrian’s.

“You’re Elena.”

“You’ve been watching me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were the only person who could destroy what I created.”

Victor confessed.

He had built the original network.

Margaret had eventually tried to seize it.

Daniel and Claire had tried to expose it.

Adrian inherited its remnants.

Victor manipulated all of them from hiding.

“Why reveal yourself now?”

“Because Adrian destroyed my legacy.”

Elena almost smiled.

“You mean he escaped it.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“He was supposed to become me.”

“He became better.”

Victor reached inside his coat.

Agents moved.

But he withdrew no weapon.

Only a document.

A contract transferring billions in hidden assets to Adrian.

“All he has to do is sign.”

Elena stared at it.

“And if he doesn’t?”

“The assets disappear.”

“Good.”

Victor looked genuinely confused.

“You don’t understand what that money could buy.”

“I understand exactly what it already cost.”

Adrian entered.

He had ignored Elena’s instruction to stay away.

Victor looked at his son.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Victor offered the contract.

Adrian tore it in half.

Victor’s face collapsed.

Not from anger.

Defeat.

Federal agents arrested him.

His testimony and records completed the destruction of the old network.

But as Victor was escorted away, he stopped beside Elena.

“You think this ends because you found me?”

Elena said nothing.

Victor smiled.

“Ask Daniel why your name was chosen.”

Elena turned toward her father.

Daniel looked horrified.

Victor laughed.

Then the elevator doors closed.

Elena faced Daniel.

“What did he mean?”

Daniel whispered:

“Elena wasn’t the name your mother gave you.”

Claire began crying.

Daniel reached into his coat and removed an old birth certificate.

Elena looked at the original name.

Her hands began trembling.

May you like

Because the surname printed beside it was not Hart.

It was Vale.
