Chapter 5 - The Truth Hidden In My Father's Last File

The door opened.

But nobody entered.

For three seconds, we only heard the sound of breathing.

Then a man stepped into the emergency-lit hallway.

The stranger from the photograph.

The man who had stood beside my father.

The man who was supposed to be a ghost from the past.

He looked older now.

His hair was gray.

His face carried years of secrets.

But I recognized him immediately.

Because my father's last photograph had been burned into my memory.

Michael moved instantly.

He pushed me behind him.

"Daniel, stay back."

I stared at my brother.

The same brother who had lied to me.

The same brother who had manipulated my entire life.

But in that moment, he wasn't trying to control me.

He was trying to protect me.

The stranger looked at Michael.

"Still protecting him?"

Michael's jaw tightened.

"Leave."

The man smiled slightly.

A cold smile.

"You always were sentimental."

Emily grabbed my arm.

Her fingers were shaking.

"Daniel."

I looked at her.

"Who is he?"

She didn't answer.

The stranger did.

"My name is Victor Hale."

The name meant nothing.

Until Michael's reaction told me everything.

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

"You know him."

I looked at Michael.

He stayed silent.

That was the answer.

I stepped forward.

"What does he have to do with my father?"

Victor looked at me.

For a moment, I thought I saw sadness in his eyes.

Then it disappeared.

"Your father was a good man."

My stomach tightened.

"Don't talk about him like you knew him."

Victor looked around the hospital room.

"You really don't know anything, do you?"

The anger inside me exploded.

"Stop saying that."

My voice echoed.

"I am tired of everyone telling me I don't understand."

Victor stared at me.

"Because you were protected from the truth."

I laughed.

A bitter laugh.

"Protected?"

I pointed at Emily.

"She almost died."

I pointed at Michael.

"My marriage was destroyed."

Then I looked at Victor.

"And now you're standing here telling me I was protected?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

A loud alarm suddenly sounded in the hallway.

Security.

Victor glanced toward the exit.

Then back at me.

"I don't have much time."

Michael stepped forward.

"You shouldn't have come."

Victor ignored him.

He reached inside his coat.

I immediately stepped back.

But he didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small black folder.

Old.

Damaged.

The corners were burned.

He threw it onto the hospital bed.

Emily looked at it.

Her face turned pale.

"Where did you get that?"

Victor looked at her.

"Your husband was supposed to find it."

My heart stopped.

"My husband?"

Victor looked at me.

"Yes."

He pointed at the folder.

"That belongs to you."

I stared at it.

Slowly, I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old company records.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

And one page with my father's handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

Because I had seen those letters my entire childhood.

My hands started shaking.

The first line said:

"Daniel, if you are reading this, Michael failed to protect you."

I looked at my brother.

His face went white.

I continued reading.

"My son, there are people around us who want control more than they want family."

My breathing became heavier.

The next sentence destroyed me.

"Never trust anyone who tells you they are saving you."

I looked at Michael.

He looked away.

Emily began crying.

"Daniel..."

I turned the page.

There was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Transactions.

At the bottom was one signature.

My father's.

And beside it...

Michael's.

I looked up.

"What is this?"

Michael finally spoke.

"Daniel."

"No."

I held up the paper.

"You explain."

He closed his eyes.

"I was trying to fix it."

"Fix what?"

"The mistake."

"What mistake?"

His silence made my blood run cold.

Victor answered.

"The mistake of believing your brother could control something he didn't understand."

Michael looked at him with anger.

"You don't know what I did."

Victor smiled.

"I know exactly what you did."

The room became silent.

I looked between them.

"What happened after my father died?"

Nobody moved.

Then Emily spoke.

"He wasn't driving alone."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She swallowed.

"The night your father died..."

Her voice trembled.

"I found evidence that someone forced his car off the road."

My chest tightened.

"But why didn't you tell me?"

She looked at Michael.

"Because he threatened me."

The words hit harder than anything.

I looked at Michael.

"No."

My voice became quiet.

"No, he wouldn't."

But even I didn't believe myself.

Michael stepped toward me.

"Daniel, listen."

I stepped back.

"How long?"

He stopped.

"How long did you know?"

Michael looked exhausted.

"Since the night it happened."

My eyes burned.

"You knew my father was murdered?"

"I knew someone wanted him dead."

"And you said nothing?"

"I was trying to find proof."

"For three years?"

His face changed.

"Because every time I got close, someone disappeared."

Victor interrupted.

"Because your brother was looking in the wrong direction."

Michael turned.

"Shut up."

Victor looked at me.

"The person responsible was never outside your family."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What are you saying?"

Victor looked directly at Michael.

"I'm saying the person who destroyed your family has been sitting beside you your entire life."

The room went silent.

I looked at my brother.

The person who taught me everything.

The person I trusted more than anyone.

Michael's eyes were filled with something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Fear.

Then Emily suddenly grabbed my arm.

"Daniel."

I looked at her.

She was staring at the folder.

At a page I hadn't noticed.

"What?"

She pointed.

My eyes followed her finger.

There was another document hidden underneath.

A hospital record.

Not mine.

Not my father's.

Michael's.

I looked closer.

The date was twenty-five years ago.

The patient's name was written at the top.

Michael Carter.

And below it was one sentence.

"Biological parent information updated."

I frowned.

"What is this?"

Nobody answered.

Michael looked at the paper.

Then at me.

His face completely changed.

Because he knew what I was about to discover.

I turned the page.

And read the name listed under biological father...

The hospital room door suddenly opened behind us.

A voice spoke from the darkness.

"Daniel..."

May you like

I froze.

Because that voice belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
