Chapter 1 - The Phone Call That Destroyed My Goodbye

A woman lay unconscious on a hospital bed, and a nurse whispered: "Sir, you need to know... she was carrying your child." When I arrived, I found my ex-wife's broken wedding bracelet beside the hospital report. On the back of the bracelet was a tiny engraving: "Forever was never the lie." I suddenly realized I had never known the whole truth.
At exactly 10:03 p.m., my phone rang.
I almost ignored it.
For ninety-three days, I had trained myself not to answer unknown numbers. Not because I hated people. Because I was afraid one voice would destroy the fragile peace I had forced myself to build.
But that night, something inside me told me to pick up.
"Is this Daniel Carter?"
The voice belonged to a woman.
A doctor.
My heart immediately tightened.
"Yes."
There was a pause.
The kind of pause people make when they are about to change someone’s life forever.
"I'm calling from Saint Evelyn Medical Center. We have a patient named Emily Carter."
I stopped breathing.
My ex-wife.
The woman whose name I had deleted from my phone but never from my mind.
"What happened to her?"
"She was brought in after an accident. She's unconscious."
The room around me disappeared.
I only heard those words.
Emily.
Accident.
Unconscious.
Then came the sentence that broke every wall I had built.
"Mr. Carter... your ex-wife is sixteen weeks pregnant."
I sat down.
I didn't remember moving.
Pregnant.
The word repeated inside my head.
It was impossible.
Or at least that was what I believed.
Because when Emily and I separated, she told me there was nothing left between us.
No future.
No family.
No reason to look back.
I believed her.
I had to believe her.
Because leaving her had been the hardest thing I had ever done.
Three months earlier, I signed divorce papers with shaking hands.
Everyone thought I was cruel.
They thought I abandoned the woman I promised to love forever.
But nobody knew the truth.
Nobody knew why I walked away.
Nobody knew what I sacrificed.
Including Emily.
I drove through the city that night faster than I should have.
My hands were shaking on the steering wheel.
Every memory I tried to bury came back.
The first time Emily laughed when she spilled coffee on my expensive suit.
The night we danced in our empty apartment because we couldn't afford furniture.
The day she cried in my arms and promised we'd survive anything.
And the last night.
The night she looked at me like she hated me.
"You don't love me anymore, Daniel."
I remembered those words.
I remembered forcing myself not to reach for her.
Because if I did, everything would collapse.
When I arrived at Saint Evelyn Medical Center, a doctor was waiting.
"Mr. Carter?"
I nodded.
"She's in room 804."
I followed him.
Every step felt heavier.
Then I saw her.
Emily.
Lying beneath white sheets.
Her blonde hair spread across the pillow.
A small oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.
A monitor beside her showed every fragile heartbeat.
She looked different.
Not older.
Just tired.
Like she had been carrying pain alone for a long time.
I walked closer.
My eyes moved toward her stomach.
A tiny bump beneath the hospital blanket.
My child.
Maybe.
I couldn't accept it.
I reached for her hand.
It was cold.
"Emily..."
My voice broke.
She didn't answer.
The doctor stood behind me.
"She was carrying the pregnancy when the accident happened."
I swallowed.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
The doctor looked away.
That scared me more than anything.
"Because she was afraid."
"Of what?"
The doctor didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he handed me a small envelope.
"She had this with her when she arrived."
I looked down.
My name was written on the front.
Daniel.
Her handwriting.
The handwriting I knew better than my own.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence.
"I left because I was protecting you."
I stared at those words.
Protecting me?
From what?
Then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
One picture.
Emily standing outside our old apartment.
And beside her...
A man I knew.
A man who was never supposed to be part of our story.
Under the picture were four words:
"Ask your brother why."
I looked at the screen.
My blood went cold.
Because my brother's name was Michael.
And Michael had been the person who told me Emily betrayed me.
The hospital lights flickered.
I looked back at Emily.
Then another message arrived.
This time, only three words.
"She remembers everything."
I turned toward Emily's bed.
May you like
Her fingers moved slightly.
And then her eyes slowly opened...
