Chapter 3 - The Man Standing Behind The Door

The person standing in the doorway did not move.
Neither did I.
For a few seconds, the entire hospital room became silent.
Emily looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Terrified.
Her fingers tightened around the blanket.
"Daniel..."
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Don't let him see you."
I turned slowly.
And there he was.
Michael Carter.
My older brother.
The man who had spent my entire life telling me he was protecting me.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who stood beside me when our father died.
The man who convinced me that my marriage was already broken.
He stood at the door holding a leather briefcase.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
"Daniel."
He said my name like nothing had happened.
Like he wasn't standing in the same room where my entire reality had collapsed.
I stared at him.
"Why are you here?"
Michael looked at Emily.
Then back at me.
"I should be asking you the same question."
Emily immediately looked away.
That small movement told me everything.
She was afraid of him.
Not uncomfortable.
Not angry.
Afraid.
I stepped between them.
"What did you do?"
Michael's expression changed slightly.
A tiny crack in the confidence he always carried.
"Daniel, this isn't the place."
"No."
My voice became colder.
"This is exactly the place."
The monitor beside Emily started beeping faster.
She looked between us.
"Please..."
Her voice shook.
"Both of you stop."
Michael walked closer.
I noticed Emily immediately moved backward.
Even though she was weak.
Even though she had just woken up.
She moved away from him.
My chest tightened.
Because Emily was never afraid of anyone.
Not even when we lost everything.
Not even when she had to fight against my entire family to prove she belonged.
But she was afraid of Michael.
"Emily."
Michael spoke softly.
Almost kindly.
"You shouldn't be awake yet."
The way he said it made my blood run cold.
Not because of the words.
Because of the meaning behind them.
"You knew she would wake up?"
Michael didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"How long have you been controlling her life?"
His jaw tightened.
"Careful, Daniel."
There it was.
The tone I remembered.
The older brother voice.
The one he used when he wanted me to feel small.
"You don't understand what happened."
"Then explain."
Silence.
I laughed quietly.
A bitter sound.
"That's what I thought."
Michael placed the briefcase on the table.
"Leave the room."
I stared at him.
"Excuse me?"
"I need to talk to Emily."
"No."
The answer came instantly.
Michael looked at me.
"Daniel."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You don't get to order me around anymore."
For the first time, his expression changed.
Anger.
Real anger.
"You have no idea what I've done to keep both of you alive."
Emily suddenly spoke.
"Alive?"
Her voice trembled.
Michael looked at her.
"Emily, don't."
"Don't what?"
She looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"Don't tell the truth?"
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
"Emily."
She closed her eyes.
A tear moved down her cheek.
"I wanted to tell you."
My heart broke.
"Then why didn't you?"
She looked at me.
"Because every time I tried, someone stopped me."
My hands curled into fists.
"Who?"
She looked toward Michael.
She didn't need to say his name.
I already knew.
Michael stepped forward.
"Emily, you need to rest."
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"You lied to him."
Michael stopped.
"You told him I cheated."
My breathing stopped.
I looked at Michael.
"What?"
Emily looked at me.
Her eyes filled with regret.
"The messages."
"What messages?"
"The ones you saw."
I remembered.
The screenshots.
The pictures.
The conversations.
The reason I believed my marriage was over.
Emily shook her head.
"They were fake."
The world seemed to tilt.
"No."
I whispered.
"No, I saw them."
"You saw what he wanted you to see."
I looked at Michael.
He didn't deny it.
That was the worst part.
He didn't deny it.
"Why?"
My voice cracked.
"Why would you do that?"
Michael looked exhausted suddenly.
Like he had been carrying something heavy for years.
"Because you wouldn't listen."
"Listen to what?"
He looked at Emily.
Then at me.
"To the truth."
I stared at him.
"You destroyed my marriage because of some truth?"
Michael didn't answer.
Emily slowly reached for my hand.
A small movement.
But I felt it.
The same warmth I had missed for ninety-three days.
"I never betrayed you."
Her voice broke.
"I never stopped loving you."
I looked at her.
And for a moment, I forgot Michael was even there.
Because that was the sentence I had wanted to hear.
The sentence I had spent months convincing myself I would never hear.
But happiness lasted only a second.
Because Michael spoke.
"You don't understand what happens if the truth comes out."
I turned.
"What truth?"
His face became serious.
"The night you signed those papers..."
He stopped.
Like he regretted starting.
I waited.
"What happened that night?"
Michael looked at Emily.
She immediately looked frightened.
"Don't."
She whispered.
Michael ignored her.
"Daniel, the divorce wasn't because Emily betrayed you."
My heart stopped.
"Then why?"
Michael's eyes met mine.
"Because someone was trying to kill her."
The room became silent.
The machines continued.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
But everything else disappeared.
I looked at Emily.
Her face had gone pale.
"Someone tried to kill you?"
She didn't answer.
Michael did.
"She found something she wasn't supposed to find."
"What?"
Michael looked toward the hallway.
Like he was checking if someone was listening.
Then he lowered his voice.
"The reason your father died."
I froze.
My father.
A memory I buried years ago.
The official story was simple.
A car accident.
A tragic mistake.
Nothing more.
But Michael's face told me it wasn't that simple.
"You knew?"
He looked away.
"I knew enough."
My anger disappeared.
Replaced by confusion.
"You lied to me for three months."
"I lied because I was trying to keep you away."
"From what?"
Michael didn't answer.
Emily squeezed my hand.
"Daniel..."
I looked at her.
"I was going to tell you everything."
"When?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"The night you left."
I swallowed.
"Then why didn't you?"
She looked toward the door.
Her fear returned.
"Because someone was watching our house."
I felt a chill.
"Who?"
Emily opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the lights in the hospital hallway suddenly went out.
The room went dark.
Only the monitor remained glowing.
Michael immediately turned toward the door.
His entire expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Someone was there.
Someone he knew.
The emergency lights turned on.
A nurse shouted from the hallway.
"Security! Someone entered the restricted floor!"
Michael stepped backward.
"He's here."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
Michael didn't answer.
Emily grabbed my wrist with surprising strength.
Her eyes were wide with panic.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
Her lips trembled.
"The person who separated us..."
A shadow appeared beneath the hospital room door.
Someone stopped outside.
Then the handle slowly moved.
May you like
Emily whispered the name of the person she feared most...
"He's here."
