Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind Her Silence

Emily's eyes opened for three seconds.
Then they closed again.
But those three seconds were enough to destroy the last piece of certainty I had left.
Because she looked at me.
Not at the doctor.
Not at the machines.
At me.
Like she had been waiting for me to come back.
I stood frozen beside her bed, unable to move.
"Emily?"
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
The monitor beside her continued beeping.
Slow.
Steady.
Almost painfully calm compared to the storm inside my chest.
A nurse rushed into the room after noticing the change in her condition.
"Mr. Carter, please step back."
I moved immediately.
I didn't argue.
I didn't ask questions.
I just watched as they checked her vital signs and adjusted the machines around her.
But my eyes never left her face.
Because for ninety-three days, I had imagined this moment a thousand different ways.
I imagined seeing her again.
I imagined her screaming at me.
I imagined her telling me she hated me.
I imagined her walking away without looking back.
I never imagined seeing her unconscious.
Pregnant.
And still wearing the necklace I gave her on our first anniversary.
The necklace was hidden beneath the hospital gown, but I saw the small silver chain around her neck.
She never took it off.
Even after everything.
The doctor finally stepped back.
"She reacted to your voice."
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means her brain is responding. That's a good sign."
I swallowed.
"But she heard me?"
The doctor hesitated.
"Possibly."
Possibly.
That single word felt like both hope and torture.
After the doctor left, I stayed beside her.
I didn't know if I was allowed to.
I didn't know if she would want me there.
But I couldn't leave.
Not again.
I looked at her hand resting on the blanket.
The same hand that once held mine while we walked through crowded streets.
The same hand that shook when she signed the divorce papers.
I remembered that day.
I remembered the way she looked at me.
Broken.
Confused.
Angry.
"Tell me the truth, Daniel."
Her voice had been trembling.
"Is there someone else?"
I almost answered.
Almost told her everything.
But I couldn't.
Because Michael's warning echoed in my head.
"One mistake, and Emily gets hurt."
My brother had always been smarter than me.
More confident.
More respected.
Everyone trusted Michael Carter.
He was the golden son.
The successful businessman.
The man who always knew what to say.
And I was just Daniel.
The younger brother who followed behind him.
Until Emily.
Emily was the first person who ever made me feel like I wasn't second place.
She didn't care about my family's money.
She didn't care about my last name.
She loved the man underneath it.
And that's exactly why I had to protect her.
Even if protecting her meant losing her.
I thought I had succeeded.
I thought my sacrifice worked.
Until tonight.
Until I learned she was carrying my child.
I looked down at the envelope again.
"I left because I was protecting you."
Those words haunted me.
Because Emily had written them.
Not Michael.
Not someone pretending to know her.
Her.
I reached for my phone.
The unknown message was still there.
The picture.
Emily outside our old apartment.
Michael standing nearby.
I zoomed in.
I had looked at the image ten times already.
But now I noticed something.
Michael wasn't looking at Emily.
He was looking at the person taking the picture.
Someone else had been there.
Someone hidden.
Someone watching them.
My stomach tightened.
I immediately called the number.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Then a message appeared.
"You should stop digging."
I stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
"Your divorce was not your choice."
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Whoever sent this knew.
They knew everything.
I looked at Emily.
Her face was peaceful.
Too peaceful.
Like she had been trapped inside a nightmare she couldn't escape.
I stood up and walked toward the window.
The city below continued moving.
Cars.
Lights.
People living normal lives.
Meanwhile, my entire world had fallen apart.
The doctor returned twenty minutes later.
"Mr. Carter."
I turned around.
"Yes?"
He held a folder.
"We found something unusual during her examination."
My heart dropped.
"What?"
He looked uncomfortable.
"There were no records of her prenatal visits."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means she wasn't receiving regular medical care."
"Why?"
The doctor opened the folder.
"Because someone was paying her medical expenses privately."
I stared at him.
"Who?"
He looked at the paper.
Then at me.
"The payments came from an account under your family name."
I stopped breathing.
"My family?"
He nodded.
"Specifically..."
He looked down again.
"The account holder is Michael Carter."
The room became silent.
I felt something inside me break.
Michael.
My brother.
The same person who told me Emily had betrayed me.
The same person who convinced me that leaving her was the only way.
The same person who had been secretly paying for her pregnancy.
Why?
Why would he hide her from me?
Why would he protect my child while destroying my marriage?
Unless...
Unless the entire story I believed was a lie.
I grabbed my coat.
The doctor looked surprised.
"Where are you going?"
I looked back at Emily.
"I need answers."
"You should stay. She may wake up."
I paused.
Because a part of me wanted to stay.
A part of me wanted to sit there until she opened her eyes again.
But another part of me needed the truth.
For ninety-three days, I had lived with guilt.
Now I wanted the person responsible to look me in the eyes.
I walked out of the hospital room.
Before I reached the elevator, my phone rang.
Michael.
I stared at his name.
The person I trusted most.
The person who destroyed everything.
I answered.
There was silence.
Then his voice.
"Daniel."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Why did you pay for Emily's pregnancy?"
Another silence.
Longer this time.
"She told you, didn't she?"
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Michael exhaled.
"She's awake."
I turned back toward Emily's room.
The hospital hallway suddenly felt colder.
"What did she tell me?"
Michael lowered his voice.
"Nothing."
"Then why are you afraid?"
I heard him breathe.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Because if Emily remembers what happened that night, you'll know who actually destroyed your marriage."
The call ended.
I stood there.
Unable to move.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
A nurse was running toward Emily's room.
Her face was pale.
"Mr. Carter..."
I turned.
"What happened?"
She looked terrified.
"Your wife..."
I froze.
"My ex-wife."
The nurse shook her head.
"She woke up."
I stepped forward.
"Is she okay?"
The nurse didn't answer.
She just looked toward the room.
"She asked for you."
My heart raced.
I walked back slowly.
The door was slightly open.
Inside, Emily was sitting up.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
She looked directly at me.
Then she whispered one sentence.
"Daniel... you have to leave before he finds out you're here."
I stopped.
"Who?"
Her face turned white.
And then she looked behind me.
May you like
At the person standing in the doorway.
A person I never expected to see...
