Chapter 4 - The Stranger Behind The Door

The hospital door opened.
Slowly.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The shadow outside the room became clearer as the person stepped forward.
I expected a stranger.
A man with a weapon.
Someone dangerous.
But the person standing there was someone I had seen many times before.
Someone I never imagined could be part of this nightmare.
"Dr. Adrian Wells?"
My voice came out confused.
The doctor who had been treating Emily stood at the entrance.
His expression was different.
Not the calm professional face he had shown me earlier.
This was fear.
Real fear.
Michael immediately stepped in front of Emily.
"Close the door."
Adrian looked at him.
"You know I can't do that."
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"You shouldn't be here."
I looked between them.
"You two know each other?"
Neither answered.
That silence told me enough.
I stepped closer.
"Someone explain what is happening."
Emily grabbed my hand.
Her fingers were cold.
"Daniel, listen to me."
I looked at her.
"Who is he?"
Her eyes moved toward Adrian.
Then back to me.
"He helped me."
Michael suddenly turned.
"Emily."
She ignored him.
"He was the only person who believed me."
The room became silent.
I looked at Adrian.
"You knew about everything?"
He didn't deny it.
"I knew enough."
My jaw tightened.
"Everyone seems to know enough except me."
Adrian looked down.
"I'm sorry."
I almost laughed.
Sorry.
That word meant nothing anymore.
For months, people had made decisions about my life.
They lied.
They manipulated.
They watched me destroy my own marriage.
And everyone had a reason.
Everyone had an excuse.
But nobody thought I deserved the truth.
I looked at Emily.
"How long?"
She lowered her eyes.
"Since before the divorce."
My heart sank.
Before the divorce.
The words hurt more than I expected.
"So everyone knew?"
"No."
Emily shook her head.
"Not everyone."
"Just enough people to ruin everything."
She closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I didn't want this."
"Then why didn't you fight for us?"
The question came out harsher than I intended.
Emily looked at me.
And I saw the pain immediately.
"I did."
Her voice cracked.
"I fought every day."
The room went quiet.
"I called you seventeen times the night before you signed the papers."
I froze.
"What?"
"I called because I was going to tell you everything."
My breathing stopped.
"I waited for you."
She looked away.
"But you never answered."
I remembered that night.
My phone.
Seventeen missed calls.
I remembered seeing them.
I remembered ignoring them.
Because Michael told me Emily was only calling to manipulate me.
Because he told me she had already chosen someone else.
Because I believed him.
A terrible feeling moved through my chest.
"What did you want to tell me?"
Emily looked at Michael.
Michael immediately shook his head.
"Don't."
That single word changed everything.
Because Michael wasn't warning me.
He was afraid.
Emily swallowed.
"I found documents."
"What documents?"
"Documents about your father's company."
I frowned.
"My father's company?"
My father had built Carter Holdings from nothing.
After he died, Michael took control.
Everyone said he saved the company.
Everyone said he protected our family's legacy.
Emily continued.
"Your father didn't die because of an accident."
The room became colder.
I stared at her.
"What are you saying?"
Michael stepped forward.
"Enough."
"No."
I turned toward him.
"You don't get to say enough anymore."
His face hardened.
"Daniel, there are things you don't understand."
"You keep saying that."
My voice rose.
"You keep acting like I'm a child."
Michael looked away.
"Because you were never supposed to be involved."
That sentence hurt.
Not because it was insulting.
Because it was honest.
My entire life, Michael had been protecting me from something.
Or controlling me.
I didn't know which anymore.
Adrian walked closer.
"There is more."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He took a small envelope from his coat.
Emily's face changed when she saw it.
"No."
She whispered.
"Where did you get that?"
Adrian looked at her.
"From the safety deposit box."
My stomach tightened.
"What safety deposit box?"
Adrian handed it to me.
"Your wife opened it three months ago."
I looked at Emily.
"My wife?"
She looked down.
"I was still your wife when I found it."
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Old.
Faded.
A picture of my father standing beside three people.
One was Michael.
One was a businessman I recognized.
And the third person...
I had never seen before.
But there was something familiar about him.
On the back of the photo were handwritten words.
"Trust nobody who benefits from my death."
My hands shook.
Then another paper fell out.
A document.
A list of payments.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
Because one name appeared repeatedly.
Michael Carter.
I looked at my brother.
He didn't look surprised.
He looked tired.
"Explain."
Michael remained silent.
"Explain!"
The monitor beside Emily started beeping faster.
She looked scared.
"Daniel..."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She whispered:
"He didn't kill your father."
I looked at Michael.
"Then who did?"
Emily's lips trembled.
Before she could answer, Adrian suddenly moved toward the window.
"Someone followed me."
Everyone looked at him.
"What?"
He pulled out his phone.
The screen showed a security camera image.
A man standing outside the hospital.
Watching the building.
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the face.
Not from my memories.
Not from my life.
From the old photograph.
The unknown man standing beside my father.
Adrian locked the phone.
"He knows we're here."
Michael immediately grabbed my shoulder.
"We need to leave."
I pulled away.
"Why?"
His eyes met mine.
"Because he isn't coming for Emily anymore."
A pause.
"He is coming for you."
The lights suddenly went out again.
The hospital fell into darkness.
A loud crash came from the hallway.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming closer.
Emily grabbed my hand.
Michael reached for the door.
Adrian whispered:
"He's inside the floor."
The footsteps stopped.
Right outside our room.
May you like
Nobody breathed.
Then the door handle began to turn...
