Chapter 9 - The Battle For My Wife’s Justice

The person on the screen stepped closer.
The image shook.
Static covered their face for a moment.
Then the connection became clear.
And I stopped breathing.
My mother.
Not a photograph.
Not a memory.
Not an old recording.
My mother was standing inside the hidden room.
Alive.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
I stepped backward.
My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
My mother had died twenty years ago.
That was the story I had been told.
The story everyone repeated.
The story I never questioned.
Until now.
"Daniel..."
Her voice came through the speakers.
The same voice I remembered from childhood.
The same voice that used to wake me up before school.
The same voice that promised me she would always protect me.
I couldn't speak.
Thomas Reed stood behind me, completely silent.
Then my mother's expression changed.
Not sadness.
Guilt.
"I know you have questions."
I stared at the screen.
"You're dead."
The words came out before I could stop them.
She looked down.
"I wanted you to believe that."
My heart sank.
"Why?"
She took a deep breath.
"Because the people who took everything from us needed to believe I was gone."
The screen flickered.
Then another file appeared.
A document opened automatically.
Thousands of pages.
Names.
Dates.
Operations.
Evidence.
I looked at Reed.
"This is everything?"
He nodded.
"Your father spent years collecting it."
"And Emily?"
"She finished what he started."
I turned back to the screen.
My mother continued speaking.
"Daniel, I need you to understand something."
Her voice became emotional.
"Your father wasn't trying to hide the truth from you because he didn't trust you."
She paused.
"He was trying to protect you from becoming the next target."
I looked at the documents.
My name appeared everywhere.
Military records.
Mission files.
Surveillance reports.
They had been watching me for years.
"But why Emily?"
My mother's face changed.
"Because Emily discovered what we couldn't stop."
"What?"
"The person controlling everything."
The room became silent.
"Who?"
My mother looked away.
Like saying the name was dangerous.
Then she answered.
"The person who had access to your life."
I felt anger rising.
"My family."
She didn't respond.
That was enough.
I looked at Reed.
"Who?"
Reed finally spoke.
"Daniel..."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"Not another secret."
My voice shook.
"Not another person trying to protect me by lying to me."
Reed looked down.
Then he walked toward the screen.
"Your wife discovered that the organization wasn't operating alone."
He pointed at the documents.
"They needed someone close to you."
I looked back at my mother.
"And they had someone."
She nodded slowly.
"Yes."
My phone suddenly vibrated.
A message appeared.
From Emily.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
"Trust the person who admits their mistakes, not the person who claims they made none."
I stared at the words.
Emily knew I would reach this point.
She knew I would question everyone.
Even the people trying to help me.
The video continued.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
"Daniel, there is one thing Emily wanted you to know."
I moved closer.
"What?"
"She never blamed you."
My chest tightened.
"She knew you would blame yourself."
I looked away.
Because she was right.
I had spent weeks thinking about every moment.
Every conversation.
Every time Emily looked worried.
Every time she tried to tell me something.
I blamed myself for not seeing it.
For not protecting her.
For not being there.
My mother continued.
"Emily chose to disappear because she discovered the final piece of evidence."
"What evidence?"
The screen changed.
A video file appeared.
Recorded three days before Emily's funeral.
The title:
"The Person Behind Everything."
I clicked it.
Emily appeared.
She was sitting in a different room.
Her expression was serious.
"Daniel, if you are watching this, you have already met the person responsible."
I froze.
Already met.
Emily continued.
"You trusted them."
The video paused for a second.
Then she said:
"They were there when you buried me."
My blood ran cold.
The funeral.
Everyone was there.
Everyone who loved Emily.
Everyone who claimed to care.
The video continued.
"The person who betrayed us wasn't someone who hated us."
Emily looked into the camera.
"They loved us."
A tear moved down her face.
"That's what made it possible."
The video stopped.
I stood there in silence.
Trying to understand.
Someone who loved us.
Someone close.
Someone at the funeral.
My mind went through every face.
Rachel.
Michael.
Friends.
Family.
Then I remembered something.
The day Emily died.
Before the accident report.
Before the funeral.
Before everyone knew she was gone.
Someone had called me.
Someone who knew before the police contacted me.
I looked at Reed.
"Who called me first?"
He frowned.
"What?"
"The day Emily died."
I searched my memory.
"Who told me?"
Reed looked confused.
Then his expression changed.
"Daniel..."
"Who called me?"
My hands started shaking.
Because suddenly I remembered.
It wasn't the police.
It wasn't the hospital.
It wasn't Emily's family.
It was someone else.
Someone who should not have known.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
No one spoke.
Then a voice whispered.
"You finally remembered."
I froze.
The voice continued.
"You always were the hardest person to fool."
I knew that voice.
My entire body went cold.
"Who is this?"
A quiet laugh.
Then:
"The person who was at Emily's funeral before you arrived."
My grip tightened.
"What do you want?"
The voice became serious.
"I want you to stop searching."
"No."
A pause.
Then the person said:
"Daniel, you still don't understand."
My eyes moved toward the screen.
The video of Emily.
The documents.
The hidden room.
Everything.
"You are not searching for the person who killed your wife."
My breathing slowed.
"Then who am I searching for?"
The answer came quietly.
"The person who helped your wife fake her death."
I froze.
The call ended.
I looked at Reed.
Neither of us spoke.
Because one thought entered both of our minds.
If Emily was alive...
Then someone had helped her disappear.
Someone close enough.
Someone powerful enough.
Someone who knew every detail.
My phone received one final message.
A picture.
I opened it.
It was Emily.
Standing outside the hidden facility.
Alive.
Next to her was the person who helped her.
I stared at the screen.
Because the person beside my wife was someone I trusted with my life.
Someone I had called family.
May you like
And below the picture was one sentence:
"Now ask him why he let Emily leave you."
