Chapter 8 - The Evidence That Exposed Them All

The voice came from inside the bedroom.
"Daniel..."
I stopped breathing.
The sound was quiet.
Weak.
But familiar.
My fingers tightened around the weapon in my hand.
Thomas Reed stood beside me, staring at the open doorway.
Neither of us moved.
Because we both knew the same thing.
Someone was inside.
And whoever it was knew my name.
"Emily?"
The word left my mouth before I could stop myself.
A few seconds passed.
Then the voice answered.
"Please... don't let him reach you."
My eyes moved toward Reed.
His face changed.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Recognition.
"You know that voice," I said.
Reed didn't respond.
That was all the answer I needed.
I stepped closer to him.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Before Reed could answer, the bedroom light turned on.
The room was empty.
But the phone on Emily's old desk was ringing.
An old phone.
The one she used years ago before switching to a newer model.
The one I thought had been thrown away after she died.
I slowly walked inside.
The phone kept ringing.
One call.
After another.
Like whoever was calling knew I was there.
I picked it up.
No one spoke.
Then a recording started playing.
Emily's voice.
"If you found this phone, it means Thomas failed to stop you."
I looked at Reed.
His expression became serious.
The recording continued.
"Daniel, I need you to understand something."
A pause.
"I didn't hide the truth because I didn't trust you."
The sound of her breathing came through the speaker.
"I hid it because I knew exactly what you would do."
I closed my eyes.
She knew me.
She knew I would chase answers.
Even if it destroyed me.
"I knew you would try to protect everyone."
Emily's voice became softer.
"But this time, you needed to protect yourself."
The recording continued.
"I discovered the people behind your final mission."
My heart tightened.
"They were never trying to hide what happened."
A pause.
"They were trying to make everyone believe it never happened."
The recording stopped.
Then another file started automatically.
This time, it wasn't Emily.
It was a man's voice.
Older.
Calm.
My blood turned cold.
Because I recognized it.
My father's voice.
"Daniel, if you are hearing this, then I am already gone."
I froze.
Reed looked at me.
The recording continued.
"I know you will search for answers."
My father's voice sounded tired.
"That has always been your greatest strength and your greatest weakness."
I sat down.
I couldn't move.
Hearing him again after six years felt impossible.
"I made mistakes."
A long pause.
"But the mistake I regret most was believing I could protect my family by keeping them away from the truth."
The recording crackled.
"Daniel, the people responsible for what happened are not outside our lives."
My father paused.
"They are inside them."
I looked at Reed.
The words were the same.
Inside.
Family.
People close to me.
"Emily found the evidence."
My father's voice became quieter.
"She was smarter than I expected."
A strange feeling entered my chest.
Pride.
Pain.
Both at the same time.
"She discovered the organization controlling the mission."
The recording continued.
"But she also discovered something worse."
The room felt colder.
"Someone from our family helped them."
My hand tightened.
The recording ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then I looked at Reed.
"Who?"
He didn't answer.
"Who helped them?"
Reed looked away.
"Daniel..."
"Tell me."
His silence made me angry.
"Everyone keeps protecting the truth from me."
I stood up.
"My wife died because everyone thought I couldn't handle it."
I pointed toward the phone.
"My father died because everyone thought they could hide it."
I stepped closer.
"But I am still here."
Reed looked at me.
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to say something.
Then he finally spoke.
"Your father suspected someone."
"Who?"
Reed hesitated.
"Your mother."
I froze.
"My mother?"
"Not because she was involved."
"Then why?"
"Because she knew something."
I shook my head.
"My mother died when I was young."
"I know."
"Then explain."
Reed looked toward the notebook.
"Your mother left evidence too."
My eyes narrowed.
"What evidence?"
"Emily found it."
"Where?"
Reed didn't answer.
Because he didn't need to.
I already knew.
The old military facility.
The place Emily warned me not to go.
The place where everything started.
Before we could leave, my phone received another message.
A location.
No words.
Only coordinates.
Reed saw them.
His face changed.
"That's not the facility."
"What is it?"
He looked at me.
"Your childhood home."
I froze.
The house where my parents lived.
The house that burned down twenty years ago.
The house everyone said was an accident.
Another lie.
I grabbed my jacket.
"We're going."
Reed stopped me.
"Daniel, think carefully."
I looked at him.
"I've been thinking for years."
I walked toward the door.
"And every answer leads back to that house."
The drive took almost an hour.
Neither of us spoke.
The road became more familiar with every mile.
I hadn't been there since I was a teenager.
The town had changed.
But the memories hadn't.
When we arrived, the house was gone.
Only an empty piece of land remained.
But someone had built a small storage building where the basement used to be.
A place that shouldn't exist.
Reed stared at it.
"Who built that?"
I walked closer.
A small metal door was attached to the side.
No sign.
No lock.
Just a keypad.
I touched it.
The screen activated.
A message appeared.
"Welcome back, Daniel."
My heart stopped.
The system knew me.
Reed stepped beside me.
"This wasn't here before."
I looked at the keypad.
"What code?"
Then I remembered.
Something Emily once told me.
A random joke.
A number she said she would never forget.
I entered it.
The door unlocked.
Inside was a hidden room.
Not old.
Not abandoned.
Someone had been using it recently.
Files covered the walls.
Photos.
Documents.
Recordings.
And one large screen in the center.
I walked closer.
The screen turned on.
A video started playing.
Emily appeared.
Alive.
Sitting in the same room.
But this time, she wasn't scared.
She looked angry.
"Daniel, if you found this room, then you finally know the truth."
I moved closer.
Emily looked directly at the camera.
"The person who betrayed us is someone you never suspected."
The video glitched.
Then a second person entered the frame.
Daniel...
I couldn't move.
Because I knew that person.
I had seen that face my entire life.
Emily looked at them and whispered:
"You need to tell him now."
May you like
The person stepped closer to the camera.
And said my name.
