Chapter 5 - The People Who Betrayed Her

Daniel didn't move.

The words from Emily's recording echoed through his mind.

"The person you think is dead is standing right behind you..."

For several seconds, he forgot how to breathe.

The room was silent.

Too silent.

He slowly turned around.

Nothing.

The hallway was empty.

The bedroom door remained open.

No footsteps.

No movement.

No shadow.

But Daniel knew better than anyone that danger did not always announce itself.

He reached for the small knife he kept hidden inside his jacket and moved carefully through the house.

Every room.

Every corner.

Every possible hiding place.

Nothing.

Whoever had been there was gone.

But Daniel noticed something.

The front door was still locked.

The windows were still closed.

Nobody had broken in.

Which meant one terrifying possibility remained.

The person had been inside before.

Someone had a key.

Someone had access to his home.

Daniel returned to the laptop.

The video had stopped.

Emily's face was frozen on the screen.

She looked terrified.

Not because she was facing death.

Because she knew something Daniel didn't.

He played the video again.

This time, he focused on the background.

The room behind Emily.

The furniture.

The objects.

Anything that could give him a clue.

Then he saw it.

A small picture frame on the shelf.

Daniel paused the video.

He zoomed in.

The frame contained a photograph of Emily and another person.

The quality was poor.

But Daniel recognized the location.

It was their old military housing.

The person standing beside Emily was wearing a uniform.

Daniel stared.

Not because of the uniform.

Because of the face.

Thomas Reed.

But the picture was not recent.

It was taken years ago.

Before Reed disappeared.

Before anyone knew there was a connection between him and Emily.

Daniel leaned back.

Questions filled his mind.

How long had Emily known Reed?

Why had she hidden it?

Why was Reed connected to her death?

And the biggest question...

Why did Emily think he was dead?

Daniel opened the notebook again.

He searched for anything about Reed.

Most pages only contained short notes.

Dates.

Locations.

Warnings.

Then he found a page folded in half.

A page Emily had intentionally hidden.

The first line made his heart stop.

"Thomas Reed didn't disappear. He was forced to disappear."

Daniel continued reading.

"The people who removed him from the world are the same people watching me now."

He turned the page.

The next words were written darker.

Like Emily had been angry when she wrote them.

"They used Daniel's military career to hide their actions."

Daniel stopped.

His military career.

What did that mean?

He remembered the final investigation before leaving active service.

A mission that was classified.

A mission where three soldiers disappeared.

A mission where the official report never matched what actually happened.

Daniel had spent years trying to forget it.

Because every time he asked questions, he was told the same thing.

"Let it go."

But Emily had not let it go.

She had investigated.

She had found something.

Daniel looked at the photo of Reed again.

Then his phone rang.

This time, it was not unknown.

It was his old military contact.

Captain James Walker.

Daniel answered immediately.

"James."

There was silence.

Then James spoke.

"Daniel, where did you get that name?"

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"What name?"

"Thomas Reed."

Daniel froze.

"You know about him?"

James sighed.

"Daniel, listen carefully. You need to stop looking into this."

Everyone kept saying the same thing.

Stop.

Forget.

Move on.

But nobody explained why.

"Did you know Emily was investigating Reed?"

Another silence.

That was all Daniel needed.

"You knew."

James lowered his voice.

"I knew she was asking questions."

"About what?"

"I can't talk about this over the phone."

Daniel walked toward the window.

"Then talk now."

"No."

"James."

"Daniel, I am trying to keep you alive."

The sentence made Daniel angry.

"Everyone keeps saying that. Emily said it. Rachel said it. Now you say it. But nobody tells me the truth."

James didn't respond.

Daniel continued.

"My wife is dead."

Silence.

"I deserve to know why."

Finally, James spoke.

"Because your wife found something that should have stayed buried."

Daniel looked at the notebook.

"What?"

James hesitated.

"The truth about your last mission."

Daniel's heart tightened.

The mission.

The one nobody talked about.

The one that ended his military career.

The one that took three soldiers away.

"What does Emily have to do with that?"

James whispered.

"She was trying to prove they were murdered."

Daniel went completely still.

The room felt smaller.

His entire life had been built around a lie.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"Did Reed know?"

James didn't answer.

Daniel understood.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except him.

"Where is Reed?"

James took a long breath.

"If you find him, don't ask questions."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"Just listen."

The call suddenly became filled with static.

Then James' voice changed.

Not fear.

Panic.

"Daniel, someone is—"

The call ended.

Daniel immediately called back.

No answer.

He grabbed his keys.

He was done waiting.

He needed to find answers before more people disappeared.

But before leaving, he noticed something on the laptop.

The second memory card had created a new folder.

Daniel had not opened it.

Inside was one file.

A document.

The title was:

"Emily Carter's Final Investigation."

Daniel opened it.

The first page contained names.

Many names.

Military officials.

Private security employees.

People connected to his old mission.

Then he saw one name.

A name that made his blood run cold.

Daniel Carter.

His own name.

He scrolled down.

The document explained that Emily had discovered a hidden connection between the mission and the people around Daniel.

But the final paragraph was incomplete.

Someone had deleted part of it.

Only one sentence remained.

"The person who betrayed Daniel wasn't an enemy. It was someone who loved him."

Daniel stared at the screen.

His phone vibrated.

A message.

From James Walker.

But James had not answered his calls.

Daniel opened it.

One sentence appeared.

"Do not trust Rachel. She knows why Emily died."

Daniel looked at the message.

Then he looked at Emily's notebook.

Rachel.

Emily's sister.

Someone who had cried beside him.

Someone who claimed she wanted to help.

Daniel didn't know what to believe anymore.

Then another message arrived.

This one had no number.

Only a photograph.

Daniel opened it.

It showed Rachel standing outside a building.

The same building from Emily's investigation.

The timestamp was from that morning.

But what made Daniel's blood freeze was not Rachel.

It was the person standing beside her.

A man everyone believed was dead.

Thomas Reed.

Daniel dropped the phone.

Because at that exact moment, someone knocked on his front door.

Three slow knocks.

Then a familiar voice spoke from the other side.

"Daniel..."

He knew that voice.

The door handle slowly moved.

And the person outside whispered his name again.
