Chapter 10 - The Last Secret She Protected

I stared at the photograph.
My hand refused to move.
Because the person standing beside Emily was not a stranger.
Not an enemy.
Not someone I had been searching for.
It was the one person I had never considered a threat.
Thomas Reed.
I looked up slowly.
Reed was standing only a few feet away from me.
The same man who had walked into my house.
The same man who claimed he wanted to help me.
The same man who told me he had been protecting my family.
But the picture showed him standing beside Emily.
Alive.
After she disappeared.
Before I could speak, Reed looked at my phone.
His expression changed.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Regret.
And that hurt more than anything.
"You knew."
My voice was quiet.
Reed didn't answer.
"How long?"
He looked down.
"Daniel..."
"How long did you know Emily was alive?"
The silence was enough.
I stepped back.
Every memory from the past weeks crashed into my mind.
The funeral.
The memory card.
The warnings.
The lies.
Everyone had pieces of the truth.
Everyone except me.
"I trusted you."
Reed looked at me.
"I know."
"No."
My voice became colder.
"You don't know."
I pointed at the photograph.
"You stood there while I buried my wife."
Reed closed his eyes.
"I didn't want you to suffer."
The words made my anger explode.
"You don't get to decide that."
The room became silent.
Because he knew I was right.
Nobody had the right to choose my pain for me.
Not my family.
Not my friends.
Not even the people who claimed they were protecting me.
"Tell me everything."
Reed looked at the screen.
Then at the hidden room around us.
"Emily contacted me two weeks before the accident."
"Accident?"
He immediately corrected himself.
"The event everyone believed was an accident."
I watched him carefully.
"What happened?"
Reed took a deep breath.
"Emily discovered the organization had been tracking you for years."
"Because of my mission?"
"Because of what your father found."
I looked at the documents on the wall.
"What did he find?"
Reed walked toward one of the files.
He opened it.
Inside was a report.
A mission report.
My mission.
The one that ended everything.
"The operation wasn't a military mission."
I frowned.
"What?"
"It was a test."
I stared at him.
"A test?"
"They wanted to see if soldiers could be controlled through information, fear, and loyalty."
My stomach tightened.
"The missing soldiers..."
"Weren't missing."
I looked at him.
Reed's voice became quieter.
"They were removed."
The room felt colder.
"By who?"
Reed pointed at the names in the file.
"People who had access to military operations."
My eyes moved across the page.
Then I saw it.
A name.
A name that had appeared before.
Michael Carter.
My father's brother.
My uncle.
I froze.
"My uncle?"
Reed nodded.
"He was one of the people who helped create the operation."
I stepped away.
"No."
"Daniel."
"No."
I shook my head.
"My uncle died years ago."
Reed looked at me.
"That's what everyone wanted you to believe."
Another lie.
Another person who wasn't really gone.
I looked at the photograph of Emily.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
Reed picked up another file.
"Because she found something worse."
"What?"
He handed it to me.
Inside was a report about Emily.
Surveillance photos.
Her movements.
Her conversations.
Everything.
Then I saw the date.
The organization had been watching her long before she knew about them.
But one photo made me stop.
It showed Emily meeting someone.
Someone I recognized.
Rachel.
Emily's sister.
I looked at Reed.
"Rachel was involved."
"Not exactly."
"What does that mean?"
"Rachel was trying to help Emily."
I stared at him.
"Then why did James warn me not to trust her?"
Reed looked confused.
"James said that?"
I nodded.
A strange expression appeared on Reed's face.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
"James Walker died three years ago."
The room went silent.
My phone almost slipped from my hand.
"No."
"I saw him."
"Who?"
"The person who called me."
Reed shook his head slowly.
"Daniel, someone has been using his identity."
I felt sick.
Every conversation.
Every warning.
Every message.
Someone had been controlling the information.
Someone had been guiding me.
But why?
Before I could answer, the hidden room's computer turned on.
Both of us looked toward the screen.
A new video appeared.
No file name.
No date.
Only one word.
"Daniel."
I pressed play.
Emily appeared.
This time she was not afraid.
She looked exhausted.
But determined.
"Daniel, if you are watching this, then Thomas finally told you the truth."
I looked at Reed.
He looked away.
Emily continued.
"I know you are angry."
A small pause.
"You have every right to be."
My eyes stayed on the screen.
"But there is something you need to understand."
She leaned closer to the camera.
"Thomas did not help me disappear."
I looked at Reed.
The room went quiet.
"Thomas helped me survive."
I froze.
Emily continued.
"The person who helped me fake my death was someone else."
My heart started beating faster.
Someone else.
"Someone who knew exactly how everyone would react."
The screen flickered.
Then Emily said:
"Someone who knew Daniel would never stop searching."
I leaned closer.
"Who?"
Emily looked away.
Like she was afraid someone might hear.
Then she whispered:
"Your mother."
The video paused.
I stared.
My mother.
The woman who was supposedly dead.
The woman who appeared in the hidden room.
The woman who claimed she was protecting me.
The screen continued.
"My mother helped me because she knew the organization was closing in."
Emily's voice shook.
"But she also hid something from me."
I frowned.
"What?"
The video glitched.
The audio became distorted.
Then Emily's voice returned.
"The person controlling everything is not who we thought."
The screen went black.
A message appeared.
"Final file requires two people."
Reed looked at it.
"What does that mean?"
Before I could answer, the hidden room lights suddenly turned off.
Complete darkness.
I reached for my weapon.
Then I heard footsteps.
Not outside.
Inside.
Someone else was in the room with us.
Reed whispered:
"Daniel..."
I turned.
"Stay behind me."
A phone screen lit up in the darkness.
Someone was standing near the entrance.
Holding a device.
The screen showed a live video.
A live feed of us.
The person stepped forward.
Slowly.
Then the voice came.
A voice I knew.
A voice that had been missing from my life for twenty years.
"Daniel..."
May you like
My entire body froze.
Because the person standing in front of me was my mother.
