Chapter 4 - The Recording My Wife Left Behind

Daniel stared at the frozen image on the laptop screen.
The person standing beside Emily's car was someone he never expected to see.
Someone who had held his shoulder at the funeral.
Someone who had looked him in the eyes and told him to accept that Emily was gone.
Someone who had acted like they were grieving.
But now Daniel was watching proof that they had been the last person with Emily before she died.
His hand moved slowly toward the screen.
"No..."
The word came out quietly.
Because saying the name made it real.
Michael.
Emily's brother.
The man who had spent the entire funeral standing beside the coffin.
The man who had told Daniel that Emily was probably just unlucky.
The man who had said, "Sometimes accidents happen, and we have to let them go."
Daniel remembered those words.
At the time, they sounded like comfort.
Now they sounded like a warning.
He replayed the video.
Again.
And again.
Every second.
Every movement.
Every detail.
Michael arrived in a dark vehicle.
He walked toward Emily.
They argued.
Emily looked terrified.
Then Michael reached into his jacket.
Daniel immediately stopped the video.
His heart raced.
He didn't know what happened next.
But he knew one thing.
Emily had been afraid of him.
Daniel stood up and walked away from the laptop.
His military instincts told him not to react emotionally.
Gather information.
Confirm the facts.
Never attack without knowing the full picture.
But this was not a battlefield.
This was his wife's death.
The woman who had waited for him through years of separation.
The woman who had raised their child while he was away.
The woman who had hidden a secret because she was trying to protect him.
Daniel grabbed his phone and called Michael.
The call connected after three rings.
"Daniel?"
Michael sounded surprised.
"Why are you calling this late?"
Daniel looked at the video.
"Where were you the night Emily died?"
Silence.
A long silence.
Then Michael answered.
"What kind of question is that?"
"Answer it."
"I was home."
Daniel watched the footage again.
Michael's face.
His movements.
His hesitation.
"You sure about that?"
Another pause.
"Daniel, I understand you're hurting."
"No."
Daniel's voice became colder.
"You don't understand anything."
Michael breathed heavily.
"Emily was my sister."
"Then why did she hide evidence from you?"
The silence afterward told Daniel everything.
Michael knew about the memory card.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
"Who told you about that?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Michael's voice changed.
"Daniel, listen to me. You need to stop looking."
"Why?"
"Because Emily didn't know what she was dealing with."
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
"Neither did you?"
Michael said nothing.
That was the answer.
Daniel ended the call.
He knew now.
The funeral was not filled with people mourning Emily.
It was filled with people protecting secrets.
Daniel returned to the laptop.
The video was still paused.
He pressed play.
The footage continued.
Michael stood beside Emily's car.
Emily stepped backward.
She was saying something.
The audio was damaged.
Daniel increased the volume.
Static.
Noise.
Then a few words became clear.
"...you promised..."
Emily's voice.
Michael responded.
"I had no choice."
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
The video continued.
Emily reached into her bag.
She pulled out something small.
The same memory card.
Daniel froze.
She had another copy.
Michael saw it.
He moved toward her.
Emily quickly stepped away.
Then the video ended.
Daniel stared at the screen.
There was one more file.
Audio only.
Created on the same night.
He opened it.
At first, there was only silence.
Then Emily's voice.
"Daniel, if this recording reaches you, I need you to understand something."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Hearing her voice again was painful.
"I didn't tell you because I knew what you would do."
A pause.
"You would come after them."
Daniel whispered.
"Yes."
Because she was right.
Emily knew him.
She knew he would never walk away.
"I need you to promise me something."
Her voice cracked.
"Don't trust anyone who says they were trying to protect me."
Daniel opened his eyes.
The message continued.
"The people around me weren't trying to save me. They were trying to control what I found."
A sound appeared in the background.
A door opening.
Emily became quiet.
Someone had entered the room.
Daniel leaned closer.
Emily whispered.
"You're early."
A man's voice answered.
Daniel stopped breathing.
The voice was familiar.
Very familiar.
But the recording was too damaged.
"Give me the file, Emily."
"No."
"You don't understand what you're doing."
"I understand exactly."
A loud sound.
Like something falling.
Then Emily screamed.
The recording ended.
Daniel immediately checked the file information.
The audio had been edited.
Someone had removed parts.
Someone had tried to erase the truth.
But they missed something.
A hidden audio layer.
Daniel used software from his military days to separate the tracks.
After several minutes, another voice appeared.
A whisper.
A name.
Daniel stopped the program.
Because he knew that voice.
It belonged to someone he trusted.
Someone who had helped him survive his darkest days.
Someone who had promised to always protect his family.
Commander Thomas Reed.
Daniel stepped away from the computer.
That was impossible.
Reed was gone.
The military records said he disappeared years ago.
Emily's notebook said his name.
The video connected him to Emily.
And now his voice was in the final recording.
Daniel grabbed the notebook again.
He searched through every page.
Then he found another note.
One he had missed.
Under Thomas Reed's name were five words.
"He never really left."
Daniel felt a chill.
If Reed was alive...
Then who had been hiding him?
And why was Emily investigating him?
His phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A picture appeared.
Daniel opened it.
It was a photo of his house.
Taken from outside.
Then another picture appeared.
This one was closer.
The camera was looking through his bedroom window.
Someone had been watching him.
The message underneath was short.
"You found Reed. Now he knows you found him."
Daniel looked at the front door.
Then at the laptop.
Then at Emily's notebook.
Everything was moving faster than he could control.
He needed to find Thomas Reed before whoever was behind this found him first.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
But before he reached the door, the laptop made a sound.
A new file appeared.
A file that had not been there before.
Created moments ago.
Daniel slowly walked back.
The file name was:
"For Daniel. The truth Emily couldn't say."
His hand hovered over the mouse.
He knew opening it could reveal everything.
Or destroy whatever was left of his life.
He clicked.
The screen turned black.
Then a live video appeared.
Emily was sitting in the same room.
But this time, she wasn't alone.
Someone was standing behind her.
Daniel couldn't see the face.
Only the shadow.
Then Emily looked directly into the camera and whispered:
"Daniel, if you're watching this, it means the person behind me already knows where you are."
The shadow moved closer.
Emily's eyes filled with fear.
May you like
Then she said one final sentence.
"The person you think is dead is standing right behind you..."
