Chapter 11 - The Day The Truth Came Out

My mother stood in front of me.

Alive.

After twenty years of believing she was gone.

After building my entire life around a memory.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

Because the woman standing in front of me was both the person I had missed my entire life and the person who had hidden the biggest truth from me.

Thomas Reed slowly lowered his weapon.

"Sarah..."

My mother's eyes moved toward him.

"You shouldn't have brought him here."

Reed looked away.

"I didn't."

Her expression changed.

Then she looked at me.

"You found this place yourself."

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I didn't know what else to do.

"So that's it?"

My voice shook.

"Everyone knew."

My mother looked down.

"Daniel..."

"No."

I stepped back.

"My wife knew."

I pointed toward the screen.

"My father knew."

I looked at Reed.

"You knew."

Then I looked at her.

"And you were alive this whole time."

A tear moved down my mother's face.

"I know how this looks."

"How it looks?"

My anger finally broke through.

"I buried you."

The room went silent.

"I grew up thinking I lost my mother."

My voice became louder.

"I spent years wondering why you left me."

My mother closed her eyes.

"And now I find out you were alive?"

She didn't defend herself.

That made it worse.

"Why?"

The question came out quieter.

"Why would you do that to me?"

My mother walked closer.

But stopped before reaching me.

"Because if they knew I was alive, you would have died."

I shook my head.

"Everyone says that."

"Because it's true."

"No."

I looked at her.

"Because everyone thinks they have the right to choose my life for me."

She looked hurt.

And for a moment, I saw my mother again.

Not the mystery.

Not the secret.

Just the woman who used to hold my hand when I was a child.

"I wanted to come back."

Her voice broke.

"Every day."

"Then why didn't you?"

She looked at the files around the room.

"Because they were watching you."

I followed her eyes.

Photos of me.

Reports.

Surveillance.

My entire life documented.

"They watched your childhood."

She pointed toward the files.

"They watched your military career."

She paused.

"And when Emily entered your life, they watched her too."

My chest tightened.

"Emily knew about you."

My mother nodded.

"She found me."

I froze.

"When?"

"Before she disappeared."

The words hit me.

"She knew you were alive?"

"Yes."

I looked away.

Everything changed again.

Emily hadn't just discovered a secret.

She had discovered my entire family was built on hidden truths.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

My mother looked at me.

"Because I asked her not to."

The anger returned.

"You asked my wife to lie to me?"

"I asked her to keep you alive."

I turned away.

I couldn't accept it.

But part of me understood.

That was the worst part.

Because everyone had reasons.

Everyone had excuses.

And every excuse had cost me something.

"What happened the night Emily disappeared?"

My mother became silent.

Then she walked toward the computer.

"She didn't die."

I already knew that.

But hearing it still hurt.

"She was taken."

My head lifted.

"By who?"

My mother looked at Reed.

Then back at me.

"The person who wanted her investigation destroyed."

"Who?"

She opened a file.

A video appeared.

Security footage.

A car.

A parking lot.

Emily walking toward someone.

The person turned.

I recognized the face.

My heart dropped.

Michael.

Emily's brother.

My mother's voice continued.

"Michael was working with them."

I stared at the screen.

"No."

The denial came automatically.

Because some part of me still wanted there to be one person who wasn't involved.

"He helped arrange the accident."

My fists tightened.

"Why?"

My mother looked at the screen.

"Because he believed he was protecting his family."

I shook my head.

"That's what everyone says."

The video continued.

Michael handed Emily something.

A file.

Then he looked around.

Someone else appeared.

A second person.

The footage quality was poor.

But I could see enough.

The person standing behind Michael.

The person controlling everything.

My mother paused the video.

"Daniel."

I looked at her.

"Before you see this, you need to understand something."

"What?"

"Not everyone who betrayed you did it because they hated you."

I stared at the frozen image.

"Sometimes people do terrible things because they are afraid."

I pressed play.

The person stepped into view.

The camera focused.

And I felt the world stop.

Because I knew that face.

It was someone I had trusted.

Someone who had been beside me through the hardest moments of my life.

Someone who had helped me survive.

Someone who had comforted me after Emily's funeral.

I whispered the name.

"James..."

My mother nodded.

"James Walker was never your friend."

I couldn't breathe.

"The man who called me."

"Wasn't James."

"The warnings."

"All from him."

"The messages?"

"All designed to guide you."

I stared at the screen.

James.

The man who knew my military history.

The man who knew Emily.

The man who knew exactly what questions I would ask.

He had been controlling the investigation from the beginning.

But why?

My mother opened another file.

"This is the last piece Emily found."

A document appeared.

At the top was a title.

"Operation Phoenix: Final Authorization."

I read the names.

Military officials.

Private companies.

And one signature.

The person who approved everything.

My father's signature.

I looked at my mother.

"My father was involved?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Then why is his signature there?"

"Because they forged it."

I looked back at the document.

"Emily discovered that."

My mother nodded.

"And that's why they had to stop her."

The room became silent.

Then the computer made a sound.

A notification.

A new file appeared.

Nobody touched it.

The title was:

"For Daniel. From Emily."

My heart stopped.

I clicked.

Emily appeared again.

But this time, she was not alone.

She was sitting beside someone.

Someone whose face was hidden.

"Daniel..."

Her voice was softer.

"I know you finally learned the truth."

She looked at the person beside her.

"And now you need to know the last secret."

The hidden person slowly turned toward the camera.

I leaned closer.

Because I knew that face too.

Emily continued.

"The person who helped me disappear..."

The video froze for a second.

Then her voice returned.

"...is the person you have been trying to find since the beginning."

The screen went black.

May you like

Then one final message appeared:

"Come alone. I am waiting at the place where Emily was supposed to die."
