Chapter 8 - The Brother Who Was Never Buried

The figure stepped into the light.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Dante stared at him.
The man looked older.
Different.
But impossible to mistake.
The same eyes.
The same sharp features.
The same expression Dante remembered from childhood.
Mara looked at Dante.
She had never seen him look like this.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Just broken.
"No..."
The man stopped.
"Dante."
Dante’s hand tightened around the wheelchair controls.
"Adrian?"
The name echoed through the hidden room.
Clara covered her mouth.
Marcus stepped back.
Even he looked shocked.
Because everyone believed Adrian Vale was dead.
Dante’s younger brother.
The golden child of the Vale family.
The man who disappeared after their father’s death.
The man whose funeral Dante attended.
Three years before Dante’s accident.
A ghost from his past was standing in front of him.
Alive.
Mara looked between them.
"You have another brother?"
Dante didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on Adrian.
"You died."
Adrian gave a small smile.
"That’s what they wanted you to believe."
Dante’s voice became colder.
"Who?"
Adrian looked around the room.
At the files.
The hidden archive.
The secrets their father left behind.
Then he looked at Clara.
"Ask her."
Everyone turned.
Clara immediately shook her head.
"No."
Dante looked at her.
"Why does everyone keep telling me to ask other people?"
His voice was quiet.
"Why does nobody tell me anything?"
Clara looked away.
Adrian walked farther into the room.
"I tried."
Dante stared at him.
"When?"
"Before the accident."
A silence followed.
Mara noticed Dante’s expression change.
He remembered something.
A memory.
A moment he had forgotten.
Adrian continued.
"You came to me because you found something."
Dante frowned.
"What?"
"Our father’s records."
Mara looked at the files.
The hidden room.
The documents.
Adrian continued.
"You discovered that the Vale empire wasn’t built the way you thought."
Dante’s jaw tightened.
"What did I find?"
Adrian looked at him.
"The truth about our family."
The room became silent.
Mara stepped closer.
"What truth?"
Adrian looked at her.
Then at Dante.
"That our father wasn’t the one controlling everything."
Dante stared.
"Then who was?"
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
Because the answer was clearly dangerous.
"Our mother."
Everyone froze.
Mara looked confused.
"But your mother..."
"Dead?"
Adrian finished.
He smiled without humor.
"That’s another story they invented."
Dante looked away.
His whole life was becoming a collection of lies.
His father.
His brother.
His wife.
Everyone he loved seemed to have a hidden version.
"Where have you been?"
Dante asked.
Adrian’s expression changed.
"Running."
"From who?"
Adrian looked toward the door.
"From the same people who put you in that chair."
Dante moved closer.
"You knew?"
"I knew they were coming."
"And you did nothing?"
The anger finally appeared.
Adrian accepted it.
"I tried to stop them."
"You disappeared."
"I survived."
Dante’s eyes became colder.
"While I spent three years unable to walk."
Adrian looked down.
"I know."
Those two words carried something heavy.
Regret.
Mara saw it.
Whatever happened between the brothers, it wasn’t simple.
Adrian walked toward the desk.
He picked up the photograph of Mara.
His expression changed.
"Why is she here?"
Dante immediately noticed.
"She’s my caregiver."
"No."
Adrian looked at him.
"She’s the reason they moved early."
Mara froze.
"What?"
Adrian placed the photograph down.
"They weren’t watching you."
He looked at Mara.
"They were watching her."
Dante’s expression darkened.
"Why?"
Adrian looked through the files.
"Because your father left one final protection."
"What?"
"A person."
Mara felt a strange feeling.
She already knew the answer before Adrian said it.
"No..."
Adrian looked at her.
"Your mother’s name was Quinn, wasn’t it?"
Mara froze.
Her breathing stopped.
Nobody had mentioned her family.
Nobody should know.
Dante looked at her.
"Mara?"
She stepped back.
"What does my mother have to do with this?"
Adrian didn’t answer.
He opened a folder.
Inside was an old document.
A birth record.
A photograph.
And a handwritten note.
Mara stared.
Her own name was written on the page.
But underneath it was another name.
A name she had never seen before.
Dante noticed her reaction.
"What is it?"
Mara couldn’t speak.
Because the document suggested something impossible.
Her entire life had been based on a lie.
Adrian looked at Dante.
"She wasn’t chosen randomly."
Dante’s expression changed.
"Explain."
Adrian closed the folder.
"Your father knew someone would eventually come looking for the truth."
Mara looked at him.
"And I’m part of that?"
Adrian nodded.
"You’re the last piece."
The words made the room colder.
Dante immediately moved his wheelchair between them.
"No."
Adrian looked surprised.
"You’re protecting her?"
Dante’s voice was firm.
"She has nothing to do with this."
Adrian looked at him sadly.
"That’s where you’re wrong."
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A gunshot.
Everyone froze.
The bullet hit the wall beside Dante.
The lights went out.
Chaos erupted.
Marcus pulled Dante behind cover.
Clara screamed.
Mara dropped to the floor.
Another shot.
Then another.
Someone was attacking the hidden room.
But they weren’t trying to kill everyone.
They were trying to destroy something.
The files.
Adrian moved toward the desk.
"Stop them!"
Mara heard footsteps above them.
Multiple people.
Inside the mansion.
Dante’s security had failed again.
Someone had already taken control.
The emergency lights turned on.
The hidden room was filled with smoke.
Marcus looked toward the entrance.
"They’re coming in."
Dante looked at Adrian.
"Who?"
Adrian picked up one final file from the desk.
His face changed.
Because he recognized the information inside.
"Dante..."
"What?"
Adrian looked at him.
"This is why they can never let Mara find out."
Mara stood slowly.
"What?"
Adrian turned the file around.
On the first page was a photograph.
A photograph of Mara as a child.
Standing beside a man.
A man Dante knew.
A man who was supposed to be dead.
May you like
Adrian whispered his name.
And Dante realized the enemy had been inside his life from the very beginning.
