Chapter 5 - The Room That Held Dante’s Past

The alarm continued screaming.
Red lights flashed across the mansion walls.
Nobody moved.
Dante stared toward the hallway.
His bedroom.
The one place he had kept locked for three years.
The one place nobody entered.
Not his guards.
Not his employees.
Not even Clara.
Mara noticed something.
Dante wasn’t afraid of whoever was inside.
He was afraid of what they had found.
"Who has access to that room?" Mara asked.
Dante didn’t answer.
Clara looked away.
That was enough.
Mara noticed.
"You know something."
Clara’s eyes moved toward her.
"I know Dante."
"No."
Mara shook her head.
"You know what happened."
The room became silent.
Dante looked at Clara.
"Open the door."
Clara stepped closer.
"Dante, wait."
"Open it."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Clara swallowed.
"I don’t think you’re ready."
Dante’s expression hardened.
"I spent three years sitting in this chair because someone decided I wasn’t ready to know the truth."
He moved his wheelchair forward.
"I’m done waiting."
The three of them walked toward the private hallway.
The mansion that once felt controlled now felt different.
Like something had changed.
Like the walls themselves were hiding secrets.
Dante stopped in front of the door.
A security panel sat beside it.
Mara watched him enter the code.
The system rejected it.
Dante frowned.
He tried again.
Rejected.
His own room.
His own code.
Denied.
Clara looked nervous.
"That’s impossible."
Dante looked at her.
"Is it?"
She didn’t answer.
Mara stepped closer.
"Someone changed the access."
Dante looked at her.
"Yes."
His voice became quiet.
"Someone who knew my code."
The three of them stood there.
Thinking the same thing.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone who had been near Dante for years.
Suddenly, the panel turned green.
The door unlocked.
Nobody touched it.
Mara’s heart started beating faster.
"Dante..."
He stared at the door.
"It opened itself."
The door slowly moved inward.
A cold darkness waited inside.
Dante entered first.
Mara followed.
Clara stayed behind for a moment.
Then stepped inside.
The room looked untouched.
Almost preserved.
A large bookshelf covered one wall.
A desk sat near the window.
Old photographs remained exactly where Dante had left them.
But something was wrong.
Mara immediately noticed.
The room wasn’t abandoned.
Someone had been here recently.
A cup sat on the desk.
Still fresh.
A folder was open.
A chair was pulled away.
Someone had been sitting here.
Waiting.
Dante moved toward the desk.
His eyes scanned everything.
Then he stopped.
A small wooden box sat in the center.
Mara noticed his reaction.
"You know that box."
Dante nodded slowly.
"My father’s."
Clara looked uncomfortable.
"Dante..."
He ignored her.
He reached for the box.
His hand stopped above it.
For a moment, he looked like a different person.
Not the feared mafia king.
Just a son standing in front of something he had lost.
Then he opened it.
Inside were letters.
Old photographs.
A small key.
And a medical bracelet.
Mara recognized it.
Hospital bracelet.
Dante picked it up.
His face changed.
"This was from the night of the accident."
Clara looked at him.
"I thought it was destroyed."
Dante turned.
"You thought?"
She froze.
Mara watched carefully.
Every answer created more questions.
Dante looked through the letters.
Most were handwritten by his father.
Business notes.
Names.
Dates.
Until he found one envelope.
His name was written on it.
Dante.
Only one word.
His hands tightened.
"Open it."
Clara whispered.
Dante looked at her.
"You knew about this?"
"No."
She shook her head.
"I knew he wrote letters."
"Who?"
"My father."
Dante looked back at the envelope.
"My father was dead."
Clara didn’t answer.
Dante opened it.
Inside was a single page.
He read silently.
Mara watched his face.
The longer he read, the more broken his expression became.
"What does it say?"
Dante didn’t respond.
He handed the paper to Mara.
She hesitated.
Then read.
Dante,
If you are reading this, then something happened that I could not prevent.
You need to know the truth about the people around you.
The person who betrayed you was not trying to kill you.
They were trying to control what you would become.
Mara looked up.
Dante looked away.
There was more.
She continued.
Your accident was arranged because you discovered the truth about our family.
The Vale name was built on a lie.
Mara stopped.
Dante took the paper back.
A long silence followed.
"My family?"
Clara stepped closer.
"Dante..."
He looked at her.
"What did my father hide?"
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
"I don’t know everything."
"But you know something."
She looked down.
"Yes."
Dante’s voice became colder.
"Tell me."
Clara took a breath.
"Your father didn’t die naturally."
Mara froze.
Again.
Another dead person.
Another lie.
Dante closed his eyes.
"When?"
"The same night your accident happened."
The room went silent.
Mara looked at Dante.
He was processing everything.
His father.
His accident.
Marcus.
Clara.
All connected.
Then something caught her attention.
A photograph lying under the box.
She picked it up.
It showed Dante’s father.
Marcus.
Clara.
And another person.
A young woman.
Mara stared at the picture.
Because she recognized her.
"Dante."
He looked at her.
"Who is this?"
Dante took the photo.
The color disappeared from his face.
"No."
Mara looked confused.
"You know her?"
Dante stared at the woman.
His voice became barely audible.
"She was supposed to be dead."
Before Mara could ask anything else, a noise came from behind the bookshelf.
A soft mechanical sound.
Click.
Everyone turned.
The bookshelf slowly moved.
A hidden passage appeared behind it.
Dante’s expression changed.
Because he had lived in this mansion for years.
And he had never known that room existed.
Clara stepped back.
"Dante..."
Inside the hidden room, a light turned on.
May you like
Someone had been waiting there.
And on the table inside was a fresh photograph of Mara.
