Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind The Betrayal

The door opened.

Clara Vale stepped inside.

She looked exactly like the woman Mara had seen in the family photographs.

Elegant.

Calm.

Beautiful.

The kind of person nobody would suspect.

She wore a black dress and carried a small handbag.

Her expression showed concern.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Concern.

As if she had walked into a room where someone was sick.

Not a room where her name had just been connected to a conspiracy.

"Dante."

Her voice was soft.

Almost loving.

Dante stared at her.

No one spoke.

Mara looked between them.

This was the woman whose name was written on the payment record.

The woman accused of helping destroy Dante’s life.

But Clara didn’t look like a villain.

And Mara knew better than anyone that appearances could be dangerous.

"Why are you here?" Dante asked.

Clara looked at him.

"Because the security alarm went off."

"You always come when something happens."

A small change appeared in Clara’s eyes.

Pain.

"Because I worry about you."

Dante laughed quietly.

It wasn’t a happy laugh.

It was the sound of someone who no longer believed anything.

"Do you?"

Clara stopped.

Mara noticed.

The question hurt her.

But she recovered quickly.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Dante looked at the folder on the table.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at Clara.

"You tell me."

Clara’s eyes moved toward the documents.

For the first time, her calm expression cracked.

Only for a second.

But Mara saw it.

She knew that look.

The look of someone who had just realized a secret was no longer hidden.

"What did you find?"

Dante moved his wheelchair closer.

"Interesting question."

Clara looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because you didn’t ask what happened."

The room became silent.

Dante’s voice became colder.

"You asked what I found."

Clara stared at him.

Mara watched the exchange carefully.

Dante wasn’t accusing her because of the evidence.

He was studying her reaction.

Testing her.

Clara looked at Marcus.

"You’re alive."

Marcus didn’t smile.

"You sound disappointed."

"I thought you were dead."

"You helped make people believe that."

Clara’s face changed.

"That’s not true."

Marcus stepped forward.

"You were there."

"I was trying to protect Dante."

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

"Protect me?"

Clara looked at him.

"Yes."

She took a step closer.

"I was trying to save you."

Mara felt confused.

Because the woman sounded sincere.

And that was the most dangerous part.

Everyone in this room believed they were telling the truth.

But only one version could exist.

Dante looked at Marcus.

"Leave."

Marcus turned.

"What?"

"I said leave."

Marcus immediately understood.

He looked at Mara.

"Don’t let her get you alone."

Clara looked offended.

"I’m not going to hurt her."

Marcus didn’t respond.

He walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped beside Dante.

"Remember what I told you."

Dante looked at him.

"What?"

"The accident was only the beginning."

Then Marcus left.

The door closed.

Now only Dante, Mara, and Clara remained.

Clara slowly walked toward the table.

She looked at the folder.

"You shouldn’t listen to him."

Dante stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because Marcus is the reason you’re in that chair."

The words hit harder than Mara expected.

Dante froze.

"What did you say?"

Clara looked away.

"Dante..."

"No."

His voice became sharper.

"Say it again."

Clara took a breath.

"Marcus caused the accident."

Mara looked at Dante.

She expected anger.

Instead, she saw uncertainty.

Because this was the first time someone had given him a different version of the truth.

"Do you have proof?"

Clara didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Dante noticed too.

"You don’t."

"I have memories."

"Memories aren’t proof."

Clara’s eyes filled slightly.

"You think I wanted this?"

"No."

Dante looked at her.

"I think you wanted something."

Clara flinched.

Mara felt the weight of the moment.

These two people had years between them.

Love.

Pain.

Secrets.

Maybe betrayal.

Maybe something else.

Clara turned toward Mara.

"You need to understand something."

Mara didn’t move.

"What?"

"Dante doesn’t know who he really is anymore."

Dante’s expression darkened.

"Enough."

But Clara continued.

"Before the accident, Dante wasn’t just a businessman."

Mara looked at him.

Dante remained silent.

Clara lowered her voice.

"He was planning to leave."

Mara frowned.

"Leave?"

"Everything."

Clara looked at Dante.

"The company. The criminal world. The people around him."

Dante said nothing.

Because she was right.

Mara could see it.

There was a secret buried there.

"You never told her," Clara whispered.

Dante looked away.

Mara felt a strange feeling.

Like she had walked into the middle of a story that started long before she arrived.

Clara continued.

"You wanted a normal life."

Dante’s voice was quiet.

"I wanted a way out."

Mara looked at him.

For the first time, she saw something beyond the mafia king.

A man who had once wanted freedom.

"So why didn’t you leave?"

Dante didn’t answer.

Clara did.

"Because someone found out."

A cold silence filled the room.

"Who?"

Mara asked.

Clara looked at her.

"The person who ordered the accident."

Dante leaned forward.

"Who?"

Clara hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"Your brother."

Mara froze.

Dante stared at her.

"My brother is dead."

Clara nodded.

"That’s what everyone thinks."

The same words.

Again.

Another person connected to Dante’s past was supposedly alive.

Mara looked at Dante.

"How many people in your life are supposed to be dead?"

Dante didn’t respond.

Because he didn’t know.

And that terrified him.

Suddenly, the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every screen in the room turned on.

The security monitors.

The cameras.

The televisions.

All showing the same image.

A hospital room.

Three years earlier.

Dante lying unconscious.

Mara stepped closer.

"What is this?"

Nobody answered.

Then a video started playing.

A man entered the hospital room.

He leaned toward unconscious Dante.

The camera angle was blurry.

But the voice was clear.

"Make sure he never walks again."

Dante’s face went pale.

Because he recognized the voice.

Clara covered her mouth.

"No..."

Mara looked at her.

"You know who that is."

Clara stepped back.

The video continued.

The man turned slightly toward the camera.

And for the first time, his face became visible.

Dante stopped breathing.

Because the man in the recording was the one person he had trusted more than anyone.

The person who had raised him.

The person who had taught him everything.

The person who was supposed to be gone forever.

Dante whispered his name.

"Father..."

The screen suddenly went black.

Then a message appeared.

One sentence.

YOU NEVER KNEW THE REAL REASON YOU SURVIVED.

Mara looked at Dante.

His hands tightened on the wheelchair controls.

Then the mansion alarm screamed again.

Not from outside.

Not from the gates.

From inside Dante’s private room.

Dante slowly turned toward the hallway.

May you like

Because someone had just entered the one place nobody could access.

His locked bedroom.
