Chapter 1 - The Caregiver Who Walked Into The Lion’s Den

A young woman stood outside a locked mansion gate, whispering: "Please... just give me one chance." When mafia king Dante Vale arrived, he found a broken caregiver badge beside her abandoned car. Four numbers were scratched into the back: "7-14-22" Dante suddenly realized she wasn’t sent by the agency.
Mara Quinn had never planned to work for a man like Dante Vale.
She had spent her entire life staying away from dangerous people, dangerous places, and dangerous secrets.
But life had a way of pushing people toward the very things they feared.
Her old car had died three miles away from Bellador’s most feared mansion.
The engine had made one final sound before giving up completely.
A strange clicking noise.
Then silence.
Mara had looked at the dashboard, then at the empty road behind her, and laughed because there was nothing else she could do.
She was already late.
The caregiver agency had warned her.
"Do not disappoint him."
They hadn’t said Dante Vale’s name with respect.
They said it like a warning.
Everyone in Bellador knew who Dante was.
A businessman.
A criminal.
A man who controlled half the city through fear and loyalty.
But three years earlier, everything changed.
A mysterious accident left him unable to walk.
Some people said it was an assassination attempt.
Others said it was a betrayal from someone close.
Nobody knew the truth.
And Dante never talked about it.
Mara had only accepted the job because she needed the money.
Her younger brother’s medical bills were growing.
Her apartment rent was overdue.
She didn’t have the luxury of choosing easy jobs.
So she grabbed her medical bag and walked the final distance to the mansion.
The guards at the gate immediately stopped her.
Two men wearing black suits stared at her like she was a threat.
"You’re the new caregiver?"
Mara nodded.
"Yes."
One guard looked at her worn shoes.
"You know where you are?"
Mara looked behind them at the massive iron gates.
"Somewhere that clearly needs better customer service."
The guards didn’t smile.
Most people didn’t joke around Dante Vale.
Mara quickly learned why.
When she entered the mansion, the silence felt heavier than the walls.
Everything was expensive.
Everything was perfect.
Everything felt cold.
Then she saw him.
Dante Vale sat near the large window in a black electric wheelchair.
He looked nothing like the helpless man she expected.
He looked dangerous.
His dark hair was neatly styled.
His beard showed just enough roughness.
His tattooed hands rested on the wheelchair controls.
His eyes followed every movement she made.
Not like a patient.
Like a man searching for a weakness.
Behind him stood three bodyguards.
Silent.
Still.
Watching.
Mara stepped forward.
"I’m Mara Quinn."
Dante didn’t answer immediately.
He studied her.
"You’re younger than the others."
"The others quit?"
"Yes."
"How long did they last?"
"One day."
Mara glanced around.
"Should I be impressed or worried?"
One of the guards moved slightly.
Dante lifted his hand.
The guard stopped.
Interesting.
Mara noticed.
Dante controlled the room without raising his voice.
"You’re not afraid."
Mara placed her bag on the table.
"I’m nervous."
"That’s different."
"Yes."
"Why?"
She looked directly at him.
"Because being afraid doesn’t help anyone heal."
For the first time, something changed in his expression.
Not kindness.
Not trust.
Just surprise.
Dante had spent years surrounded by people who lied to him.
People who wanted his money.
His power.
His protection.
Nobody spoke to him like he was simply a person.
Mara walked toward his wheelchair.
"I need to check your medication schedule."
"No."
She stopped.
"No?"
"I don’t let strangers touch my things."
Mara nodded.
"Then you’ll have to teach me."
Dante narrowed his eyes.
"You’re not scared of losing this job?"
Mara smiled slightly.
"I already walked three miles because my car died. I’m too tired to quit now."
The room became quiet.
Then something unexpected happened.
Dante almost smiled.
Almost.
But it disappeared quickly.
Because Dante Vale had survived too many betrayals to trust a woman who arrived at his door by accident.
Later that evening, Mara organized his medications.
She noticed something strange.
One bottle had a different label.
The prescription date didn’t match.
She looked closer.
Someone had changed it.
Before she could investigate further, Dante’s voice came from behind her.
"What are you doing?"
Mara turned.
He was watching her.
"I think someone made a mistake."
Dante’s expression hardened.
"Everyone makes mistakes."
"Not with medication this expensive."
A long silence followed.
Then Dante moved closer with his wheelchair.
"Give me the bottle."
Mara handed it to him.
He stared at the label.
Something dark appeared in his eyes.
Fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
Because he knew something she didn’t.
Someone inside his own house had been trying to harm him.
"Mara."
She looked up.
"Yes?"
Dante’s voice became colder.
"From this moment on, you don’t touch anything unless I tell you."
"Because you don’t trust me?"
"No."
He looked at the bottle.
"Because I don’t know who I can trust."
That night, Mara stayed in the guest room.
She thought about leaving.
She really did.
But before sunrise, she found something under her door.
A small envelope.
No name.
No message.
Only one thing inside.
A photograph.
A picture of Dante Vale before the accident.
Standing beside someone Mara recognized.
Someone who should not have been connected to him.
She turned the photo over.
There was a handwritten sentence on the back.
"Ask Dante who pushed him."
Mara froze.
Then her phone rang.
May you like
The caller name appeared.
And she realized the person contacting her was the last person she expected...
