Chapter 8 - The Husband Who Came Back From The Dead

The elevator doors opened.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the man standing inside was impossible.

For two years, I had repeated the same sentence in my mind.

Daniel was gone.

Daniel was dead.

Daniel had left me alone with a grave that held no answers.

But now he was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Real.

Looking exactly like the man I remembered.

The man I loved.

The man who destroyed me.

My hands started shaking.

Lily immediately grabbed my fingers.

"Mommy..."

Her small voice brought me back.

I stepped backward.

"No."

Daniel looked at me.

His eyes filled with something I couldn’t understand.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

"Elena."

Hearing my name from him felt worse than hearing a stranger say it.

Because I remembered the way he used to say it.

Softly.

Like I was the only person in the world.

I remembered him touching my stomach when I was pregnant.

I remembered him promising me:

"I will protect our family."

Now I wondered what that promise actually meant.

Damian moved in front of me.

His voice was cold.

"You should be dead."

Daniel looked at him.

"I know."

The answer shocked everyone.

Daniel slowly stepped out of the elevator.

No guards.

No weapon.

Just himself.

"I knew this day would come."

I stared at him.

"You knew?"

His eyes moved to Lily.

Then back to me.

"I always knew you would find her."

My chest tightened.

"Find her?"

My voice cracked.

"She was my daughter."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I know."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Don’t say that."

Tears filled my eyes.

"You don’t get to say that."

The room became silent.

"You took her."

Daniel looked destroyed.

"I saved her."

The same words.

Everyone kept using the same words.

Saved.

Protected.

Hidden.

But nobody asked what it cost me.

"Two years."

My voice became quiet.

"You took two years from me."

Daniel looked down.

"I know."

"You let me believe she died."

"I had no choice."

I laughed bitterly.

"No choice?"

I looked at Lily.

"She learned to sleep without me."

Daniel’s face changed.

"Elena..."

"She learned to call someone else daddy."

His eyes moved toward Damian.

And for the first time, I saw jealousy.

Real jealousy.

But I didn’t care.

Because the man standing in front of me was the reason I lost everything.

"Why?"

I asked.

That one word carried everything.

Why the lies?

Why the funeral?

Why the pain?

Why Lily?

Daniel looked around the room.

At Damian.

At Adrian.

At Marco.

Then finally at me.

"Because someone was trying to kill her."

I shook my head.

"You always say that."

"Because it’s true."

"Then tell me who."

Daniel went silent.

And that silence told me everything.

He was still hiding something.

"Tell me."

He looked at Lily.

"Not here."

Damian immediately stepped forward.

"You don’t make demands."

Daniel looked at him.

"You still don’t understand."

Damian’s expression hardened.

"Understand what?"

Daniel looked at him.

"That Lily was never the target."

Everyone froze.

I felt cold.

"What?"

Daniel looked at me.

"She was the distraction."

The words hung in the air.

A distraction.

From what?

My mind raced.

Then I remembered Sophia’s voice.

You had twins.

I looked at Daniel.

"What happened the night Lily was born?"

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

"Who told you?"

I stared at him.

"My sister."

Daniel went pale.

"Sophia is alive?"

The reaction surprised me.

"You didn’t know?"

"No."

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely shocked.

"That’s impossible."

Damian looked between us.

"Everyone has been lying."

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

Daniel stepped closer.

"I need to explain everything."

I didn’t move.

"Start with the twins."

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at me.

And something in his face broke.

"You know."

I swallowed.

"Yes."

He closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

"There were two babies."

My legs felt weak.

Lily.

And another child.

A child I never knew existed.

"Where is my other baby?"

Daniel looked away.

That was the answer before he spoke.

"I don’t know."

The pain in my chest became unbearable.

"You don’t know?"

He shook his head.

"The night they took Lily, they separated them."

"Who?"

Daniel looked toward Damian.

Then Adrian.

Then Marco.

"Someone who wanted control over both families."

I stepped closer.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at me.

And this time, there was no hesitation.

"The person who ordered everything."

The room waited.

Daniel whispered:

"Your mother."

I froze.

My mother.

A person who had been dead for five years.

"No."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I thought she was dead too."

I couldn’t breathe.

"This is impossible."

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

"I kept this because I was waiting for the right moment."

Damian immediately moved.

"What is that?"

Daniel looked at him.

"The truth."

He handed it to me.

I didn’t want to take it.

Because every envelope I opened destroyed another part of my life.

But my hand moved anyway.

Inside was a document.

A hospital record.

My name.

The date Lily was born.

And another name.

A second child.

I read the line again.

And again.

Because my eyes refused to accept it.

The second baby’s name was written there.

A name I had never chosen.

A name someone else gave her.

Then I saw the signature at the bottom.

The person who signed the document.

The person who changed my children’s lives forever.

My mother.

I looked up.

"Why?"

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

"Because she knew something about your family."

"What?"

He stepped closer.

"Elena..."

Before he could finish, every light in the building suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Someone screamed outside.

A gunshot echoed through the hallway.

Damian immediately grabbed Lily and pushed everyone down.

Emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Slow.

Warning.

Marco looked toward the security monitors.

His face turned white.

"Boss."

Damian looked up.

"What?"

Marco pointed at the screen.

The cameras showed the hallway outside.

A person was standing there.

Holding an old photograph.

A photograph of me.

And next to it...

a photograph of the missing baby.

May you like

Marco whispered:

"The person who took her is here."
