Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Remembered My Perfume

A little girl grabbed my apron inside a crowded luxury restaurant and whispered: "Don’t leave me again, Mama." When mafia boss Damian Caruso arrived, he found a broken perfume bottle beside his daughter’s chair. On the cracked glass was a tiny engraving: "For Elena. Always." Damian realized this wasn’t a random memory.

I was carrying three plates through the private dining room when my entire world stopped.

The little girl sitting at Damian Caruso’s table looked at me like she had seen a ghost.

I had served hundreds of wealthy guests before. I had learned how to smile, how to disappear into the background, how to keep my head down around powerful men.

Especially men like Damian Caruso.

Everyone in the city knew his name.

They whispered about his empire, his influence, and the danger that followed him wherever he went.

But none of that mattered when his daughter looked directly at me with wide, trembling eyes.

Because she wasn’t looking at a stranger.

She was looking at someone she had been waiting for.

The moment I leaned closer to place the wine glass beside her father’s plate, her small hand reached across the table and grabbed my wrist.

I froze.

The little girl smelled the perfume I wore every day.

A perfume I had owned since before my life fell apart.

A perfume my husband had given me before everything was taken away.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Mama?"

The word was barely louder than a breath.

But it hit me harder than a scream.

I pulled my hand back.

"No," I whispered.

Because I knew the truth.

My baby had died two years ago.

At least, that was what everyone told me.

Two years ago, I woke up in a hospital room with an empty space beside me and a doctor who refused to look me in the eyes.

Two years ago, I buried a tiny white blanket.

Two years ago, I lost the only thing I had ever loved more than my own life.

I had spent every day since then trying to survive.

And now a child I had never met was calling me the one name that still haunted my dreams.

Damian stood slowly.

His expression changed.

The cold, unreadable face everyone feared disappeared.

For a second, he looked like a man who was terrified.

"Who taught you that word?" he asked his daughter.

The little girl refused to look away from me.

"You did," she whispered.

My heart stopped.

Damian’s jaw tightened.

"I never told her that."

The restaurant suddenly felt silent.

The guests around us continued eating, unaware that something impossible was happening at the center of the room.

The little girl reached for me again.

Her fingers touched my sleeve.

"You smell like her."

I looked at Damian.

"Her?"

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because a powerful man like Damian Caruso could control his emotions.

But right now, he looked like someone who had just discovered a secret he was never supposed to find.

A manager rushed over, apologizing.

"Miss Elena, are you alright?"

Damian turned toward me immediately.

"Elena?"

I swallowed.

"Yes."

His eyes narrowed.

"That was her name."

I felt cold.

"Whose?"

Damian didn’t speak.

The little girl began crying.

Not loudly.

Not like a child throwing a tantrum.

Like someone who had been holding pain inside for too long.

I knelt beside her.

"What’s your name?"

She touched my face carefully.

"Lily."

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because Lily was the name I had chosen for my daughter before she was born.

A name nobody knew.

Nobody except my husband.

Nobody except me.

I stood up slowly.

"How do you know that name?"

Damian looked away.

That was when I noticed something.

His daughter wasn’t wearing a normal necklace.

Around her neck was a small silver pendant.

The same pendant I had bought before my baby was born.

The same one I had placed inside the hospital bag.

The same one I thought had been buried forever.

My hands started shaking.

"Where did she get that?"

Damian looked at the pendant.

Then he looked at me.

And for the first time, the mafia boss everyone feared looked completely powerless.

"Because that belonged to your daughter."

I couldn’t breathe.

"That’s impossible."

Damian stepped closer.

"There’s something you were never told."

The restaurant disappeared around me.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

"What?"

His expression changed.

"Your baby didn’t die."

I stared at him.

No words came.

Because the next thing he said was the one thing that shattered everything I believed for two years.

"Someone made sure you would believe she did."

I stepped backward.

"No."

Damian reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

My hands trembled as I looked at the handwriting.

Because I recognized it.

It was my husband’s.

The man who had told me my baby was gone.

The man who had disappeared afterward.

Damian handed me the envelope.

"I kept this hidden because I was trying to protect my daughter."

I looked at Lily.

She was crying silently.

Waiting for me.

Waiting like she had been waiting her whole life.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one photograph.

A photograph of me holding a newborn baby.

On the back was one sentence.

May you like

And when I read it, my blood turned cold.

"Elena, if you are seeing this, it means Damian Caruso finally found the truth..."
