Chapter 3 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The restaurant door opened.

Everyone turned.

But I only saw one person.

A man standing in the doorway.

A man I knew.

A man who should not have been alive.

My fingers went cold.

Because the face staring back at me belonged to Marco Bellini.

The man Damian had just said was supposed to be dead.

For two years, I had tried to forget every person connected to the nightmare that destroyed my life.

My husband.

The hospital.

The funeral.

The empty room where my baby was supposed to sleep.

But Marco Bellini was different.

Because I had seen him before.

Not recently.

Not clearly.

But I remembered his voice.

The night everything changed.

He was the man standing outside my hospital room.

The man who told my husband there was no other choice.

The man who looked at me through the glass window while I cried.

And now he was standing ten feet away from me.

Alive.

Damian immediately moved in front of Lily and me.

His entire body changed.

The calm businessman disappeared.

The dangerous man returned.

"Everyone leave."

His voice was quiet.

But nobody questioned him.

The restaurant staff quickly moved the guests away from the private dining area.

The room emptied within seconds.

Only Damian, his guards, Marco, Lily, and me remained.

Marco looked older than I remembered.

His hair had more gray.

His face carried exhaustion.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Until he looked at Lily.

Then something broke.

"She's alive."

The words came out like a confession.

Damian stepped forward.

"You knew."

Marco looked at him.

"I knew she survived."

My heart stopped.

"Survived?"

Marco turned toward me.

And suddenly I hated that he looked sorry.

I didn’t want his sympathy.

I wanted answers.

"You knew my daughter was alive?"

My voice shook.

Marco lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

I walked toward him.

I didn’t think.

I just moved.

"You knew?"

He didn’t answer.

"You knew I spent two years believing my child was dead?"

His jaw tightened.

"You knew I buried an empty grave?"

His eyes closed for a moment.

"I know."

A sound escaped my throat.

Not a cry.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disbelief.

"How could you?"

Marco looked at Lily.

"I was trying to protect her."

I laughed.

A broken laugh.

"Protect her?"

I pointed at Lily.

"She grew up without her mother."

Marco looked away.

"Because keeping you away kept her alive."

Damian’s voice cut through the room.

"Careful."

Marco looked at him.

"You still don't understand what happened, Damian."

Damian’s expression hardened.

"I understand enough."

"No."

Marco shook his head.

"You understand the lie they wanted you to understand."

That sentence made Damian freeze.

I noticed.

And that scared me.

Because Damian Caruso was not a man who froze.

Not for anyone.

"What are you talking about?"

Marco looked around the room.

Then at the guards.

"Not here."

Damian stepped closer.

"You walked into my restaurant after hiding for two years. You don’t get to choose the location."

Marco stared at him.

"Then listen carefully."

He pointed toward Lily.

"Because the people who took her are still looking."

My stomach tightened.

"Who took her?"

Nobody answered.

That was becoming the pattern.

Everyone knew something except me.

Everyone had pieces of my life.

Everyone had secrets.

Except the person who lived through the pain.

Me.

I grabbed Damian’s arm.

"No more."

He looked at me.

"No more secrets."

His eyes softened slightly.

I continued.

"I lost two years."

My voice cracked.

"I lost my daughter."

I looked at Lily.

"And I lost the chance to watch her grow."

Tears filled my eyes.

"So whatever this is, whatever war you people are fighting, I deserve the truth."

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily walked between us.

She reached for my hand.

"Mommy is scared."

The words destroyed me.

Because she was right.

I was terrified.

But I wasn’t leaving.

Not this time.

Marco watched us quietly.

Then he reached into his coat.

Damian’s guards immediately raised their weapons.

Marco stopped.

"Relax."

He pulled out a small black notebook.

Old.

Worn.

Damaged.

He handed it to me.

"I found this with your husband’s things."

My breathing stopped.

"My husband?"

Marco nodded.

"He kept records."

I opened the notebook.

The first page had a date.

Two years ago.

The day my daughter disappeared.

The handwriting was my husband’s.

I read the first sentence.

"Elena must never know the truth."

My hands started shaking.

I turned the page.

There were names.

Dates.

Payments.

Locations.

And one name appeared again and again.

Damian Caruso.

I looked up.

"You were involved."

Damian’s face changed.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

I stared at him.

He looked angry.

Not at me.

At the notebook.

"Someone wanted you to believe that."

I looked back down.

The next page had a photograph attached.

It showed my husband standing beside Damian.

They were talking.

Like they knew each other.

Like they had planned something.

My heart sank.

"You knew him."

Damian didn’t deny it.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Silence.

Finally, he answered.

"Because he came to me the night Lily was born."

I stopped breathing.

"What?"

Damian looked at Lily.

"He told me someone was trying to kill my family."

I frowned.

"Your family?"

Damian nodded.

"Your daughter."

The words hit me.

"Why would my daughter be connected to you?"

Damian looked away.

Because there was pain there.

Real pain.

Not the cold expression he showed everyone else.

"My daughter’s mother died before Lily was born."

I stared.

"What are you saying?"

Damian looked at me.

"Your husband told me Lily was my daughter."

The world went silent.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t think.

No.

That was impossible.

My daughter.

My baby.

My life.

Everything suddenly felt like a puzzle with missing pieces.

Lily looked between us.

"Mommy?"

I turned toward her.

She looked scared.

I immediately knelt down and held her.

"No matter what anyone says, you are my daughter."

Her arms wrapped around me.

And for one second, everything else disappeared.

Then Damian spoke quietly.

"Elena."

I looked up.

His expression was different.

"I need to tell you something."

"What?"

He hesitated.

And that hesitation frightened me more than the truth.

"Your husband wasn’t trying to hide Lily from me."

I waited.

"He was hiding Lily from someone else."

My hands tightened around my daughter.

"Who?"

Damian looked toward Marco.

Marco slowly nodded.

Then Damian said the name.

A name that made Marco’s face turn pale.

"The person who ordered Lily’s disappearance..."

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

It was Marco’s.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

"Impossible."

Damian stepped closer.

"What?"

Marco turned the phone around.

There was only one message.

One sentence.

And one name.

The message read:

May you like

"I know where Elena and Lily are."

And underneath it was the name of the person who was supposed to be dead.
