Chapter 2 - The Letter Hidden for Two Years

I held the photograph with both hands.

Because if I let go, I was afraid I would fall.

The woman in the picture was me.

There was no mistake.

My face.

My hospital gown.

My tired smile.

And in my arms was a tiny baby wrapped in the same white blanket I remembered holding before everything went dark.

Before they told me she was gone.

Before they took my entire future away.

I stared at the back of the photograph again.

The sentence written there looked like a wound reopening.

"Elena, if you are seeing this, it means Damian Caruso finally found the truth..."

My fingers tightened around the paper.

"Who wrote this?"

Damian didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because powerful men like him always had answers.

They always knew what to say.

But now he looked like a man standing in front of a fire he couldn’t control.

"My security team found that photograph three days ago," he finally said.

I looked up.

"Three days ago?"

He nodded.

"It was hidden inside an old storage unit that belonged to someone who worked for my family."

"Who?"

His eyes moved toward Lily.

The little girl was still holding onto the edge of my apron.

Like if she let go, I would disappear.

"My father’s former assistant."

I froze.

"Your father?"

Damian’s expression hardened.

"My father was involved in things I didn’t know about."

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because none of this made sense.

A mafia boss.

A missing child.

A hidden photograph.

A dead baby who was suddenly alive.

It felt like a nightmare someone else had written for me.

"You expect me to believe this?"

Damian didn’t get angry.

He didn’t threaten me.

He simply looked at Lily.

"I expect you to believe what your heart already knows."

I hated that sentence.

Because a part of me did know.

The second Lily touched my hand, something inside me had recognized her.

Not logically.

Not because of evidence.

Because of something deeper.

Something a mother could never explain.

I looked at her small face.

The way she watched me.

The way she held back her tears.

The way she looked afraid I would leave.

My chest hurt.

"What happened two years ago?"

Damian slowly sat down.

For the first time, he didn’t look like the dangerous man everyone feared.

He looked exhausted.

"Your husband told you the baby died after birth."

My eyes narrowed.

"How do you know about my husband?"

"Because he worked for my family."

The room became colder.

My husband.

The man who held my hand while I cried.

The man who promised me everything would be okay.

The man who disappeared after our daughter’s funeral.

He had always said he was grieving too.

He had always said he was searching for answers.

But Damian’s words made something inside me crack.

"He lied to me."

Damian didn’t deny it.

"He did."

I looked away.

I didn’t want him to see the tears forming in my eyes.

I had spent two years trying not to hate someone I once loved.

Because hating him meant accepting he betrayed me.

And I wasn’t ready for that.

Lily suddenly whispered.

"Mommy was crying a lot."

My breath caught.

She looked at me.

"Before."

I knelt beside her.

"What do you remember?"

Damian immediately stepped forward.

"Elena."

But I raised my hand.

I needed to know.

Even if it destroyed me.

Lily looked down.

"Someone told me I had to stay quiet."

My heart tightened.

"Who?"

She grabbed my fingers.

"A man."

"What man?"

She looked toward Damian.

Then back at me.

"The man who brought me to Daddy."

A strange silence fell.

Damian’s face changed.

"What did he look like?"

Lily frowned, trying to remember.

"He had a scar."

Damian went completely still.

A few seconds passed.

Then he turned toward one of the men standing near the restaurant entrance.

"Find Marco Bellini."

The bodyguard immediately moved.

I noticed the change.

Damian was no longer confused.

He was afraid.

"Who is Marco Bellini?"

Damian looked at me.

"Someone who was supposed to be dead."

That answer made my stomach drop.

Before I could ask anything else, Lily pulled my hand closer.

"Can you stay?"

The question was simple.

But it broke something inside me.

Because two years ago, I had begged the universe for one more chance to hold my baby.

And now a little girl who shouldn’t exist was asking me not to leave.

I touched her hair.

"I don’t know what’s happening."

She nodded.

"I know."

"You do?"

She smiled sadly.

"Mommy always said grown-ups hide things because they’re scared."

My eyes filled with tears.

"Who told you that?"

Lily looked at me.

"You did."

I stopped breathing.

"What?"

She reached into the pocket of her dress.

Her tiny fingers pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was worn.

Old.

Like it had been opened hundreds of times.

She handed it to me.

"I kept it."

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

The handwriting was mine.

Not similar.

Not close.

Mine.

The letter was short.

Only a few lines.

"Lily, if someone finds you before I do, remember this..."

I covered my mouth.

Because I didn’t remember writing it.

I looked at Damian.

"Why don’t I remember this?"

He didn’t answer.

And that silence told me more than words could.

I read the next line.

"Trust the man who protects you, but never trust the man who says he saved you."

My blood ran cold.

Because there was only one person who had ever said those words to me.

My husband.

I lowered the paper.

"He told me he saved our daughter."

Damian’s eyes darkened.

"Then he was lying."

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone in the restaurant turned.

A second later, one of Damian’s guards rushed inside.

His face was pale.

Something had happened.

He walked directly toward Damian and whispered something into his ear.

I watched Damian’s expression change.

Anger.

Shock.

Fear.

All at once.

"What is it?"

He looked at me.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he slowly pulled out his phone.

On the screen was a message.

One name.

One name I recognized immediately.

Because it belonged to the man who destroyed my life.

Damian turned the phone toward me.

My hands went numb.

The message was from my husband.

And it said:

"Elena, if Damian has shown you Lily, then you have exactly twelve hours before they come for both of you..."

I looked at Damian.

"Who is coming?"

He didn’t answer.

Because behind me, the restaurant door opened.

May you like

A man stepped inside.

And Damian whispered the name I never expected to hear again.
