Chapter 5 - The Daughter Hidden From Everyone

The door handle moved.
Nobody breathed.
Damian raised his hand.
His guards immediately aimed their weapons at the entrance.
Lily buried her face against my chest.
I held her tighter.
Because every instinct inside me was screaming the same thing.
Someone was here.
Someone who knew.
Someone who had been watching us.
The handle stopped moving.
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then a voice came from the other side.
"Damian."
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from memory.
Not from seeing him.
From the fear it created.
Damian’s face changed.
"Everyone lower your weapons."
Nobody moved.
"Now."
The guards slowly lowered their guns.
I looked at him.
"Who is that?"
Damian didn’t answer.
The door opened.
And a man stepped inside.
Older.
Calmer.
Dressed in a dark suit.
He looked nothing like a criminal.
That was what made him terrifying.
Because dangerous people rarely looked dangerous.
His eyes moved around the room.
Then stopped on Lily.
The moment he saw her, his expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Like he had been searching for her for years.
"No."
Lily whispered.
Her small hand grabbed mine.
"That’s him."
The man looked at her.
A strange sadness crossed his face.
"Lily."
She immediately hid behind me.
I stepped in front of her.
"Don’t say her name."
The man looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something in his eyes.
Regret.
"Elena."
Hearing my name from his mouth made my skin crawl.
"How do you know me?"
He didn’t answer.
Damian stepped forward.
"You have five seconds to explain why you’re in my office."
The man looked at Damian.
"You still protect her."
Damian’s expression became cold.
"Three seconds."
The man sighed.
"My name is Adrian Voss."
Marco immediately looked shocked.
"Impossible."
Adrian glanced at him.
"You thought I was dead too?"
Nobody spoke.
I looked between them.
"Who is he?"
Damian’s voice was low.
"The man who started all of this."
My stomach dropped.
Adrian smiled sadly.
"No."
He looked at me.
"The man who tried to stop it."
I hated that every person in this room had a different version of the truth.
Everyone was either a protector or a liar.
And I had no idea which one was worse.
I stepped forward.
"I don’t care who you are."
Adrian looked at me.
"I want answers."
He nodded.
"You deserve them."
"Then start talking."
He looked at Lily.
"Two years ago, Daniel discovered something."
My heart tightened.
"About what?"
"About the people around you."
I frowned.
"What people?"
Adrian took a slow breath.
"Your husband wasn’t the only person who knew Lily survived."
I felt a chill.
"Who else?"
Adrian looked at Damian.
Then Marco.
Then me.
"Everyone involved in the operation knew."
The room went silent.
I looked at Damian.
"What operation?"
Nobody answered.
That was when I understood.
They weren’t hiding a small secret.
They were hiding an entire world.
A world I had been kept away from.
Adrian continued.
"When Lily was born, Daniel found out there was a plan to take her."
My hands tightened around Lily.
"Why?"
Adrian looked at her.
"Because someone believed she was the key to controlling both families."
I shook my head.
"She was a baby."
"Exactly."
His voice became darker.
"That was why nobody expected anyone to protect her."
I looked at Damian.
"Is that why you took her?"
Damian immediately answered.
"No."
The speed of his response surprised me.
He looked at Lily.
"I found her after she disappeared."
Adrian nodded.
"He’s telling the truth."
I looked at him.
"Then who took her?"
Adrian’s face became serious.
"Your husband."
The words hit harder than anything before.
"No."
I stepped back.
"No."
Adrian didn’t look away.
"Daniel took Lily away because he believed it was the only way to keep her alive."
Tears burned my eyes.
"He stole my daughter."
"He saved her."
I stared at him.
"You don’t get to say that."
Adrian accepted my anger.
"I know."
"Do you know what I went through?"
His expression changed.
"Yes."
"No, you don’t."
My voice broke.
"I woke up every day thinking my child was gone."
Nobody spoke.
"I visited a grave that had nothing inside."
I looked at Damian.
"I blamed myself."
Then I looked at Adrian.
"I blamed my body."
My voice became quieter.
"I thought I failed her."
Lily started crying.
"Mommy."
I immediately turned to her.
"I'm sorry."
She hugged me.
And that was the moment everyone in the room looked away.
Because even powerful men couldn’t stand watching someone break.
After a while, Damian spoke.
"Why did Daniel disappear?"
Adrian looked at him.
"Because he found the person behind everything."
"Who?"
Adrian hesitated.
That hesitation told me the answer mattered.
"Someone inside the Caruso family."
Damian’s expression changed.
"No."
Marco looked away.
Like he already knew.
I noticed.
"You knew."
Marco didn’t respond.
"Marco."
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The betrayal hurt.
Again.
"How many secrets are there?"
Nobody answered.
I laughed softly.
A tired laugh.
"Right."
I looked at Lily.
"We leave."
Damian looked at me.
"Elena."
"No."
I shook my head.
"I don’t know who is protecting me anymore."
His expression softened.
"I am."
I looked at him.
"How do I know?"
He had no answer.
Because he knew I was right.
Then Lily suddenly looked toward Adrian.
Her face changed.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
She slowly walked closer to him.
I immediately grabbed her hand.
"Lily, don’t."
But she wasn’t afraid.
She looked confused.
"You were there."
Adrian froze.
"What?"
She pointed at him.
"Before."
My heart stopped.
"What do you mean?"
Lily looked at Adrian.
"You carried me."
The room went silent.
Adrian’s face lost all color.
"When?"
Lily touched her forehead.
"At the hospital."
I looked at him.
"You were there the night she was born?"
Adrian didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
His silence was enough.
Damian stepped forward.
"You lied."
Adrian looked at him.
"I was trying to protect her."
"From who?"
Adrian looked at Lily.
Then at me.
And his voice became barely a whisper.
"From the person who was standing beside you the entire time."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Adrian reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
He placed it on the desk.
Damian picked it up first.
Then his face changed.
I walked closer.
The photograph showed a hospital hallway.
Two people standing outside my daughter’s room.
One was Daniel.
The other...
was someone I recognized immediately.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had cried with me after Lily’s funeral.
My hands began shaking.
Because written on the back of the photograph was a date.
May you like
And one sentence.
"The night Elena lost her daughter, she lost her because of the person she trusted most..."
