Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Came Back With A Secret

A little girl stood outside the mansion door, gripping a pink suitcase and whispering: "Mom said I had to come back..." When Dominic Valente arrived, he found a broken maid badge lying beside the suitcase. Four words were scratched into the metal: "Protect her. No matter what." Dominic realized this wasn't an ordinary goodbye.

Friday morning began with a silence Dominic Valente had never trusted.

The Valente estate was always filled with movement. Servants walking through marble halls. Security guards changing shifts. The distant sound of engines arriving through the iron gates.

But that morning, something was missing.

Her.

Elena Rossi.

The maid who had worked inside the estate for seven years.

The woman who never missed a day.

The woman who knew every corner of the house but never asked questions about the man who owned it.

Dominic stood in his office, staring at the empty chair near the kitchen entrance where Elena always placed his coffee.

She had disappeared before sunrise.

No explanation.

No note.

No goodbye.

Only one thing remained.

Her daughter.

Dominic first saw the little girl through the glass doors.

She was standing alone outside the entrance, wearing a pale yellow dress and holding a tiny pink suitcase almost as big as her body.

She looked terrified.

And she looked like she had been waiting there for a long time.

The guards had already noticed her but didn't know what to do.

No one approached.

Not because she was dangerous.

Because everyone knew Dominic Valente.

The most feared man in the city.

A man who could destroy companies with a phone call.

A man whose name made people lower their voices.

But children were different.

Children did not fear reputations.

They only feared being abandoned.

Dominic walked outside slowly.

The little girl looked up at him.

Her eyes were the same dark brown as Elena's.

"Where is your mother?" Dominic asked.

The girl looked down.

"She said not to cry."

Those words hit him harder than he expected.

Dominic crouched down.

"Tell me what happened."

The girl held the suitcase tighter.

"Mom left this for you."

He looked at the suitcase.

It was old.

Cheap.

Nothing like anything that belonged inside the Valente mansion.

But attached to the handle was a broken metal maid badge.

Elena's badge.

Dominic picked it up.

The back had scratches.

Someone had carved words into it.

Protect her.

No matter what.

His expression changed.

Elena had not simply left.

She had been afraid.

"Who gave you this?" Dominic asked.

The girl hesitated.

"Mom."

"When?"

"Last night."

Dominic looked toward the gates.

The security cameras showed Elena leaving alone at 4:12 a.m.

No luggage.

No car.

No one following her.

It looked like she chose to disappear.

But the badge told a different story.

Dominic opened the suitcase.

Inside were only a few children's clothes, a stuffed rabbit, and a small envelope hidden underneath the fabric lining.

The envelope had his name written on it.

Not Dominic.

Not Mr. Valente.

Just one word.

D.

His fingers froze.

Elena had never called him that.

Not once.

He opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Elena standing beside a man Dominic recognized immediately.

His own father.

But that was impossible.

His father had been dead for ten years.

On the back of the photograph were six words.

The truth started before you.

Dominic stared at the message.

The little girl watched him silently.

"What is your name?" he asked.

She swallowed.

"Lia."

"Lia, did your mother tell you why she left?"

The girl shook her head.

"She said if bad people came..."

She stopped.

Dominic leaned closer.

"If bad people came, what?"

The girl looked toward the road.

"She said you would know what to do."

For the first time in years, Dominic Valente felt something he hated.

Uncertainty.

He had spent his entire life controlling every situation.

Every enemy.

Every betrayal.

Every threat.

But now a four-year-old girl stood in front of him carrying the only evidence of a secret someone had died trying to hide.

Dominic picked up the photograph again.

His father's face stared back at him.

And beneath the image was something he had never seen before.

A symbol.

The same symbol that had appeared on every mysterious file connected to his family's darkest secret.

He immediately called his oldest security officer.

"Find Elena Rossi."

A pause.

Then Dominic added:

"Alive."

Because he suddenly understood something.

Elena hadn't abandoned her daughter.

She had hidden her.

And whoever she was hiding from was still looking.

That night, Dominic moved Lia into the safest room in the entire estate.

A room no outsider knew existed.

But at midnight, the security system activated.

Someone had entered the property.

Dominic walked toward the monitor.

The cameras showed the front gate opening.

And standing outside...

was Elena Rossi.

May you like

But she wasn't alone.

Beside her stood the one person Dominic believed could never return...
