Chapter 11 - The Daughter Who Was Never Lost

The woman on the screen waved.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in the room recognized her.
Not as a stranger.
Not as a threat.
But as someone who had been standing in my life for years.
My breath stopped.
"No."
The word came out before I could control it.
Damian looked at the screen.
Then at me.
"Elena."
I couldn’t hear him.
I couldn’t hear anything.
Because the woman holding my daughter’s hand outside the building was Sophia.
My sister.
The same woman who told me she was searching for answers.
The same woman who cried with me.
The same woman who said she wanted to protect me.
And beside her stood a little girl.
My daughter.
Alive.
My knees weakened.
Daniel caught my arm.
But I pulled away.
Not because I hated him.
Because I didn’t know what to feel anymore.
"Sophia."
My voice cracked.
Damian immediately ordered his guards.
"Bring them inside."
My mother stepped forward.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"Why?"
She stared at the screen.
"Because Sophia didn’t come here to return the child."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What?"
My mother looked at me.
"She came because she knows the truth."
Daniel’s expression changed.
"What truth?"
My mother didn’t answer.
She looked at Lily.
Then at the screen.
"She knows which daughter belongs to which family."
The words confused me.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
Again.
Always secrets.
Always half-truths.
I walked toward my mother.
"No more."
She looked at me.
"I’m serious."
My voice shook.
"I spent my entire life being protected from the truth."
I pointed toward the screen.
"And all it did was destroy me."
The room became silent.
"I want everything."
My mother closed her eyes.
Then nodded.
"Your father had a reason for hiding the twins."
I waited.
"He wasn’t trying to control them."
She looked at Damian.
"He was trying to protect them from a war that started before they were born."
Damian frowned.
"What war?"
My mother looked at him.
"The war between the Caruso family and the Bellini family."
Marco immediately reacted.
"The Bellinis?"
My mother nodded.
"Your families were connected long before you knew."
I looked at Lily.
A child.
A baby.
A person everyone had turned into a secret.
"I don’t understand."
My mother stepped closer.
"When you were born, your father discovered that someone wanted to use the twins as leverage."
"Why?"
"Because one child carried your blood."
She looked at Damian.
"And the other carried his."
The room went silent.
I understood.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Lily was connected to Damian.
But my other daughter...
My other daughter was connected to something else.
"What happened to them?"
My mother looked down.
"The twins were separated because keeping them together would have made them both targets."
I shook my head.
"No."
Tears filled my eyes.
"They needed their mother."
"I know."
"No."
My voice broke.
"They needed me."
My mother looked devastated.
"Yes."
That one word hurt more than anything.
Because she admitted it.
She knew.
Everyone knew.
And still they took them away.
The door opened.
Sophia entered.
The little girl stood beside her.
My heart stopped.
She looked exactly like Lily.
But different.
Her hair was slightly darker.
Her expression was calmer.
Like she had learned not to cry.
I couldn’t move.
Sophia looked at me.
For a moment, she looked like my sister again.
Not a liar.
Not a person hiding secrets.
Just Sophia.
"Elena."
I stared at her.
"You knew."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Yes."
"How long?"
She swallowed.
"Since the night they were born."
The answer broke me.
"You held her."
Sophia nodded.
"You held my daughter."
"I did."
"And you left me."
Her tears fell.
"I was trying to bring her back."
"But you didn't."
"No."
Her voice broke.
"I failed."
The little girl beside her looked at me.
She didn’t cry.
She didn’t run.
She just watched.
Like she was trying to understand who I was.
My heart shattered.
I slowly walked toward her.
Every step felt impossible.
When I stopped in front of her, she looked up.
"Who are you?"
My voice trembled.
The little girl looked at Sophia.
Then at me.
And whispered:
"The person you were looking for."
I covered my mouth.
Because there were no words.
No mother should ever meet her child like this.
Not after years.
Not after being told she was gone.
Not after wondering if she would ever know her.
I knelt down.
"Can I..."
I couldn’t finish.
The little girl nodded.
Slowly.
I touched her face.
And something inside me recognized her.
The same way it recognized Lily.
The same impossible feeling.
The same connection.
"My baby."
The words escaped.
The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.
Nobody spoke.
Even Damian looked away.
Because some moments were too painful to watch.
Sophia stepped forward.
"I’m sorry."
I looked at her.
"You should be."
She nodded.
"I am."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
She looked at the floor.
"Because the person who took her threatened everyone."
"Who?"
Sophia hesitated.
Then looked at my mother.
Everyone noticed.
My stomach tightened.
"No."
Sophia whispered:
"Your mother knows."
I turned.
My mother looked away.
Again.
Another secret.
"Mom."
She slowly looked at me.
"What did you do?"
Her face changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Elena..."
"What did you do?"
She couldn’t answer.
Sophia stepped closer.
"The person who started everything wasn’t trying to steal your children."
My blood went cold.
"Then what?"
Sophia looked at my mother.
"They were trying to hide who your daughters really are."
Daniel stepped forward.
"What are you saying?"
Sophia looked at him.
"Daniel, you still don’t know the entire truth."
He froze.
"About what?"
She looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then at the other child.
"The twins weren’t separated because they were in danger."
The room became silent.
"They were separated because one of them was supposed to inherit something."
Damian frowned.
"Inherit what?"
Sophia looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
"An empire."
Nobody moved.
My mother suddenly grabbed the edge of the desk.
Her face turned pale.
Because she knew what was coming.
I looked at her.
"Tell me."
She didn’t answer.
"Tell me!"
My voice echoed through the room.
Finally, she whispered:
"Your father left you something."
I froze.
"What?"
"Something that can destroy every family in this room."
Damian’s expression changed.
"What did he leave?"
My mother looked toward the door.
And for the first time...
she looked terrified.
"Something someone is willing to kill for."
The lights suddenly went out.
Again.
A loud crash came from the hallway.
Everyone reached for their weapons.
Lily grabbed my hand.
My other daughter grabbed my other hand.
Two children.
Two daughters.
Two lives stolen from me.
Then a voice came through the darkness.
A voice I had never heard before.
But everyone else recognized.
Damian froze.
Marco stepped back.
Daniel whispered:
"No."
The voice said one sentence.
"Elena, it’s time you met the person who started this."
May you like
The door opened slowly.
And standing outside was the one person nobody expected to see.
