Chapter 9 - The Man Who Returned From The Grave

A child’s voice came through the hidden speaker and whispered:
"Daddy... he said he was my family."
When Gabriel Moretti followed the signal beneath the mansion, he found Emma locked inside an abandoned security room.
On the table was a phone showing a live video of Lily.
And standing beside her was the man Gabriel had buried twelve years ago.
Gabriel suddenly realized this was never about revenge.
It was about taking his daughter.
The note was still in Gabriel's hand.
Come alone, Gabriel.
The signature at the bottom had almost made him forget how to breathe.
Vincent Moretti.
His father's younger brother.
The man who disappeared twelve years ago.
The man everyone believed had died overseas.
Another lie.
Another ghost.
Gabriel crushed the paper.
"No."
Adrian looked at him.
"He planned this."
Gabriel turned.
"You knew?"
Adrian's expression changed.
"I suspected."
"Suspected?"
Gabriel stepped closer.
"My daughter is missing, and you suspected?"
Adrian didn't back away.
"Because Vincent was always patient."
The name felt poisonous.
"Your father feared him."
Gabriel looked at Clara.
"Why?"
Clara answered quietly.
"Because Vincent didn't want the empire."
A pause.
"He wanted the bloodline."
Gabriel felt his stomach tighten.
The sentence made no sense.
Until it did.
Lily.
Sophia.
The children.
Not the companies.
Not the money.
The family itself.
Someone wanted control over the future.
Marcus rushed into the room.
"Boss."
Gabriel turned.
"We traced the message."
"Where?"
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"The signal is coming from inside the mansion."
Everyone froze.
Again.
Inside.
The enemy had never broken in.
The enemy had always belonged there.
Gabriel looked at the empty nursery.
The room where his daughters slept.
The room where he thought they were safe.
"Find Emma."
Marcus nodded.
"We're already searching."
Gabriel moved toward the hallway.
Then stopped.
Something caught his eye.
A small mark on the wall.
Almost invisible.
A scratch.
Three lines.
Adrian saw it.
His face changed.
"What?"
Adrian walked closer.
He touched the mark.
"Vincent."
Gabriel looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Instead, he pressed the wall.
A hidden panel opened.
Behind it was a small device.
A communication transmitter.
Marcus immediately checked it.
"Someone has been using this."
Gabriel stared.
"From here?"
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
The mansion had another secret.
One more hidden system.
One more place someone had been watching them.
Gabriel took the device.
A recording was stored inside.
He pressed play.
Static.
Then a familiar voice.
Vincent.
"Gabriel."
Everyone became still.
"I know you are listening."
A pause.
"You always were stubborn."
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
The voice continued.
"You think this is about Lily."
Another pause.
"It isn't."
Gabriel looked at the monitor.
"Then what?"
The recording continued.
"This is about what your father left behind."
Adrian stepped forward.
"What did he find?"
Vincent's voice answered from the recording.
"The truth."
The audio cut.
Marcus checked the device.
"Only one message."
Gabriel stared.
One message.
One warning.
One threat.
He looked at Adrian.
"What did our father leave?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because he knew.
Gabriel saw it in his eyes.
"You know."
A long silence.
Then Adrian said:
"Yes."
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"What?"
Adrian looked toward Clara.
Then toward the hidden room.
"Your father created a backup plan."
"For what?"
"For the day the family turned against itself."
Gabriel laughed once.
Without humor.
"Everyone knew something except me."
Adrian looked guilty.
"Gabriel..."
"No."
His voice became quiet.
"You don't get to protect me anymore."
A pause.
"You lost that right when you let me bury you."
The words hurt Adrian.
Gabriel saw it.
But he didn't stop.
Not now.
Not when Lily was gone.
"Where is the backup plan?"
Adrian looked at him.
"Your father hid it where nobody would search."
"Where?"
Adrian answered.
"In the one place you never went after he died."
Gabriel immediately knew.
His childhood home.
The old Moretti estate.
The place he abandoned after his father's death.
Before anyone could speak, Marcus's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
"What?"
Silence.
Then:
"Send me the coordinates."
Gabriel watched him.
"What happened?"
Marcus looked at him.
"We found Emma."
Relief almost appeared.
Almost.
Then Marcus continued.
"But she isn't alone."
Gabriel's expression changed.
"Who is with her?"
Marcus looked at the phone.
"The cameras identified one more person."
A pause.
"Someone we thought was dead."
Gabriel walked toward him.
"Who?"
Marcus lifted his eyes.
"Your mother."
The room went silent.
Gabriel stopped.
His mother had died when he was nineteen.
A car accident.
At least...
That was what everyone told him.
"No."
Marcus turned the screen toward him.
A photograph.
Security footage.
A woman standing beside Emma.
Older.
But unmistakable.
Gabriel stared.
Because the woman in the image was impossible.
Adrian stepped closer.
And for the first time since returning from the dead...
He looked afraid.
"Gabriel..."
The words came slowly.
"That's not your mother."
Everyone looked at him.
Adrian continued:
"That's the person who helped fake her death."
Gabriel felt the world shift.
Another secret.
Another disappearance.
Another person who was never truly gone.
Then the mansion lights suddenly went out.
Every screen turned black.
Except one.
A single camera feed appeared.
It showed Lily sitting in a dark room.
Alone.
Then someone stepped behind her.
A familiar voice whispered:
"Tell your father the truth, Lily."
The little girl looked up.
May you like
And said the one sentence that made Gabriel freeze.
"Uncle Adrian was the one who brought me here."
