Chapter 3 - The Name Hidden in the Dark

A little girl pointed at the security monitor and whispered:

"Daddy... that man was here before."

When Gabriel Moretti enlarged the hidden camera footage, he saw a familiar face standing outside Lily's nursery.

The person was wearing a security uniform.

But the access code belonged to Gabriel himself.

Then three words appeared on the screen:

"Ask your brother."

Gabriel stopped breathing.

Because he didn't have a brother.

Not anymore.

The message stayed on the screen for exactly five seconds.

Then it disappeared.

No trace.

No file.

No record.

Just a blank monitor showing his daughter's empty nursery.

Gabriel stared at it.

His mind moved faster than his body.

Someone had entered his home.

Someone had bypassed his security.

Someone had used his private authorization.

And now someone was playing with him.

That was something Gabriel Moretti did not tolerate.

He grabbed his phone.

"Marcus."

The security chief answered immediately.

"Yes, boss."

"I want every person who has accessed the mansion in the last six months."

"Already pulling the records."

"Everyone."

Gabriel's voice became colder.

"Family. Employees. Lawyers. Friends."

A pause.

"Even people who no longer work for me."

Marcus understood.

Because there was only one reason Gabriel would mention former employees.

He was looking for ghosts.

Ten minutes later, Marcus entered the office.

He placed a folder on the desk.

Gabriel didn't look up.

"Tell me."

Marcus opened it.

"We found the camera installation."

"Who?"

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Gabriel looked up.

"Say it."

"The device was installed by someone who had access to the original security construction plans."

Gabriel leaned back.

"When?"

"Before you moved into the mansion."

Silence.

That answer changed everything.

The hidden cameras weren't installed recently.

They weren't connected to Lily's therapy.

They weren't part of an attack.

Someone had planned this years ago.

Gabriel opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Blueprints.

Old security reports.

Then he saw something.

A signature.

His eyes narrowed.

"No."

Marcus watched his reaction.

"You know the name?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

Because he did.

The signature belonged to Adrian Moretti.

His younger brother.

The brother who died eight years ago.

The brother whose funeral Gabriel attended.

The brother whose death had destroyed his family.

Impossible.

Gabriel closed the folder.

"Find everything about Adrian."

Marcus looked surprised.

"Boss..."

"Everything."

His voice was quiet.

"His accounts. His contacts. His medical records. His last year alive."

Marcus nodded.

Then stopped.

"There is something else."

Gabriel looked at him.

"What?"

Marcus placed another document on the desk.

"We found the original security authorization."

Gabriel opened it.

The date was eight years old.

The same year Adrian died.

His eyes moved down the page.

Then froze.

The authorization wasn't signed by Adrian.

It wasn't signed by an employee.

It was signed by Gabriel himself.

But Gabriel had no memory of ever approving it.

He looked at Marcus.

"Someone forged my signature."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

Gabriel's expression hardened.

"What do you mean?"

Marcus pointed at the document.

"The signature was verified."

A pause.

"Your fingerprint was also attached."

The room became silent.

Gabriel stared at the paper.

Someone had used his identity.

His authority.

His access.

And somehow...

They had done it while he was still alive.

For the first time in years, Gabriel Moretti felt something he hated.

Uncertainty.

That evening, Gabriel didn't go home immediately.

He sat inside his car outside the mansion.

Watching the windows.

Thinking.

For years, he believed his biggest threats came from outside.

Rivals.

Enemies.

Men who wanted his money.

Men who wanted his territory.

But what if the danger had always been inside?

What if someone had been watching his family before Lily was even born?

His phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

Gabriel opened it.

One photograph.

His blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Lily.

Not from today.

From two years ago.

The day she came home from the hospital.

Under the image was one sentence.

"She was never supposed to survive."

Gabriel immediately called Marcus.

"Trace this number."

"We're trying."

"Now."

Gabriel looked at the photograph again.

His hand tightened around the phone.

Someone had known about Lily from the beginning.

Someone had been watching.

Waiting.

The call connected.

Marcus sounded tense.

"Boss..."

"What?"

"We traced the message."

"And?"

"It came from inside the mansion."

Gabriel looked up toward the building.

Impossible.

Everyone inside was accounted for.

Every employee.

Every guard.

Every family member.

"Who sent it?"

Marcus didn't answer.

Gabriel's voice dropped.

"Marcus."

The security chief finally spoke.

"It was sent from Emma Brooks' room."

Gabriel went still.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Emma.

The woman who had spent weeks helping his daughter.

The woman who had made Lily smile.

The woman who had done what doctors couldn't.

Could she be connected?

No.

Something didn't make sense.

Gabriel had learned long ago that appearances were weapons.

Kindness could be an act.

Trust could be a trap.

But Emma's actions with Lily felt real.

Too real.

He ended the call.

Then walked into the mansion.

The entire house became quiet when Gabriel entered.

Servants stepped aside.

Guards lowered their eyes.

Nobody wanted to be the person who interrupted him.

He walked directly upstairs.

Toward Emma's room.

Before he reached the door, he heard something.

A voice.

Emma.

She was talking on the phone.

Gabriel stopped.

"I know what I promised."

Silence.

Then:

"But Lily is different now."

Gabriel's expression changed.

He moved closer.

Emma continued.

"I can't let him find out yet."

Gabriel's hand slowly moved toward the door handle.

His heart was beating harder.

Not from fear.

From anger.

Who was she talking to?

What was she hiding?

Then Emma spoke again.

And the next words made Gabriel freeze.

"Because Adrian told me the truth before he died."

Gabriel's hand stopped.

Adrian.

His dead brother.

His dead brother's name had just come from Emma's mouth.

Inside his home.

Eight years after the funeral.

The hallway lights flickered.

Gabriel opened the door.

Emma turned around.

Her face lost all color.

May you like

Because she knew exactly who was standing there.

And she was holding the same photograph Gabriel had just received.
