Chapter 8 - The Daughter My Father Hid

A woman stepped into the hidden room and whispered:

"You finally found what he buried."

When Gabriel Moretti saw the person standing in the doorway, he recognized the face from the old photograph.

It was the girl beside his father.

The child everyone thought never existed.

And she was holding a document with Gabriel's name on it.

Nobody moved.

The woman stood at the entrance of the hidden room.

Older now.

But Gabriel knew those eyes.

He had seen them before.

Not in a photograph.

Not in a memory.

In the mirror.

There was something familiar about her face.

Something impossible.

Adrian stood behind Gabriel, completely still.

And that frightened Gabriel more than anything.

Because Adrian was never speechless.

Not even when he was cornered.

Not even when he was afraid.

But now...

He looked terrified.

"Who are you?"

Gabriel's voice was cold.

The woman looked at him.

Then at Adrian.

Then back at Gabriel.

"My name is Clara."

A pause.

"And I am your sister."

The words should have sounded impossible.

But after everything Gabriel had discovered tonight...

Impossible had become normal.

He looked at Adrian.

"You knew?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

Gabriel's expression changed.

"You knew."

"I found out years ago."

"And you didn't tell me?"

Adrian stepped forward.

"Because she was the reason I disappeared."

Gabriel turned back to Clara.

"What does that mean?"

Clara walked into the room.

She placed the document on the table.

"My existence was never supposed to be known."

Gabriel looked at the paper.

"What is it?"

"Your father's confession."

The room became silent.

Gabriel picked up the document.

The handwriting was old.

His father's handwriting.

Again.

The same handwriting that had controlled his entire life from beyond the grave.

He started reading.

Gabriel,

If you are reading this, then my mistakes have finally reached you.

I created this family through fear.

I believed control was the same as protection.

I was wrong.

Gabriel's eyes moved faster.

I had a daughter before your mother.

Her name was Clara.

I hid her because I believed enemies would use her against us.

But hiding her created the very danger I feared.

Gabriel stopped.

He looked at Clara.

She looked away.

The pain on her face wasn't new.

It was old.

The kind of pain that came from years of being forgotten.

Adrian spoke quietly.

"Father found out someone was trying to use Clara."

Gabriel looked at him.

"Who?"

Adrian hesitated.

"The same person who targeted Lily."

Gabriel continued reading.

The person inside our family wanted control of everything.

The companies.

The money.

The children.

They believed blood gave them the right to rule.

Gabriel lowered the paper.

"Who?"

Clara looked at him.

"Your uncle."

Gabriel froze.

His father's younger brother.

A man he barely remembered.

A man who disappeared from the family after a business dispute.

A man everyone believed had left the country.

"He died."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

Gabriel stared.

"No?"

"He wanted everyone to believe that."

The room went quiet.

Another ghost.

Another lie.

Another person who had disappeared.

Gabriel felt anger building.

His entire life had been surrounded by people pretending to be dead.

People hiding.

People making decisions for him.

"Why Lily?"

Clara looked at him.

"Because your daughter was the one thing nobody could control."

Gabriel frowned.

"What?"

"Your father built an empire based on fear."

She looked at him.

"You inherited it."

A pause.

"But Lily changed you."

Gabriel said nothing.

Because he knew she was right.

Before Lily, Gabriel believed weakness was dangerous.

After Lily was born, he discovered there was one person he would destroy the world to protect.

And someone knew that.

Someone understood.

Someone wanted to use it.

Clara pointed toward the documents.

"Your father discovered a plan."

"What plan?"

"To make sure the Moretti bloodline continued through someone they could control."

Gabriel's face hardened.

"You're talking about Lily."

"Yes."

The word felt like a weapon.

Gabriel remembered every doctor.

Every report.

Every explanation.

Every time someone told him Lily's condition was unfortunate.

A medical complication.

A tragedy.

But Adrian had been right.

Someone had wanted him distracted.

Someone had wanted him desperate.

Someone had wanted him dependent on their answers.

"Dr. Hale."

Clara nodded.

"He was never just your family doctor."

Gabriel's hands tightened.

"He worked for my uncle."

"Yes."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Gabriel, you need to understand something."

He looked at his brother.

"The reason I stayed hidden wasn't because I was afraid of them."

A pause.

"I was afraid of what you would become if you knew too early."

Gabriel stared.

Adrian continued.

"You would have gone after everyone."

"Yes."

"And they wanted that."

Gabriel understood.

A trap.

If Gabriel attacked without proof, he would destroy innocent people.

He would become exactly what they wanted.

A violent man.

A dangerous man.

A man who could be controlled by anger.

Then Gabriel heard something.

A noise.

Above them.

A door closing.

Everyone stopped.

Marcus looked toward the ceiling.

"Someone is upstairs."

Gabriel immediately thought of Lily.

He turned.

"Emma."

The word barely left his mouth before his phone rang.

Emma.

He answered instantly.

"Where are the girls?"

Silence.

Too much silence.

"Emma?"

Her voice finally came.

But she sounded afraid.

"Gabriel..."

His body went still.

"What happened?"

"I was taking Lily and Sophia to the safe room."

"And?"

A pause.

"Someone was already inside."

Every person in the hidden room froze.

Gabriel's grip tightened around the phone.

"Who?"

Emma breathed.

"I don't know."

Then the call cut.

Gabriel didn't hesitate.

He ran.

For the first time in years, nobody saw the mafia boss.

Nobody saw the powerful man.

Nobody saw the person who controlled half of New York.

They saw a father.

A father running toward his children.

The mansion was chaos.

Guards moved through every hallway.

Marcus followed closely behind.

Adrian and Clara came after them.

Gabriel reached the upper floor.

The nursery door was open.

Too open.

He stopped.

The room was silent.

The toys were untouched.

The lights were on.

But Emma was gone.

Gabriel stepped inside.

"Lily?"

No answer.

"Sophia?"

Nothing.

Then he saw something on the floor.

A small pink bracelet.

Lily's bracelet.

Beside it was a note.

Gabriel picked it up.

Three words.

"Come alone, Gabriel."

His eyes moved to the bottom of the page.

And beneath the message was a signature.

May you like

A name he had not heard in twelve years.

The name of the man who was supposed to be dead.
